How long can you skate by on potential?

Here's something I've been musing on lately

Dear Planet Earth, you are under-utilizing my abilities. All this imagination is largely going to waste here. I think you need to take some responsibility for that.

I think my mind might be a superstation on the idea train superhighway. I don't claim to be highly educated. I don't claim to be super smart. But some days I feel like I am a human brainstorm. This should be a good thing but its not always. It can make it hard to concentrate on the task at hand. Over the years I've learned to compensate for it so it hasn't become the distraction that it could be. No, I don't have ADD. I'm just a dreamer. When I'm left alone, under no pressure to perform, I get some tremendously interesting ideas. When someone tells me about a problem, sometimes I get flooded with ideas to help them - sometimes about things I have no expertise in at all. I feel funny voicing those kinds of things but I do it anyway with the preface that this just occurred to me and I don't really know what I'm talking about. If I get a random idea and I can't think of someone who can use it I just write it in a notebook and move on. I feel like I'm sent these ideas for a reason though. Maybe its my job to track down the person who needs each idea and tell them. I don't really know how that's feasible though. It helps that I know a lot more people now though. These last few years I've been able to employ a lot more of my little musings.

I don't think I've ever found a situation where I can take full advantage of this ability. Festival planning was pretty damn close but what I've learned is that even though it takes several months (if not the whole year) to plan a festival, very few organizations can afford to keep a person on staff year round. Its really a seasonal gig.

What I'm ultimately searching for is a situation where this strength can be fully utilized. These ideas are only as useful as they are connectible to people or organizations that can use them. I like to help people. I like to find ways for people to achieve their goals. I like to make things happen. I like looking at a situation like a maze and finding the cleverest route to the desired destination.

I'm imagining a service that people come to for out of the box thinking, like a think tank for ideas and strategies. I could even arrange a quorum of people and we could take a question and come up with the most outrageous, creative, cutting edge and innovative solutions together. Sure, I could do this alone but what's the fun in that? No, depending on the question at hand, I'd like bring in subject matter experts to consult on the feasibility of the idea and expand on it. The service could be for individuals or businesses.

A typical client would be someone who has a goal but has a serious roadblock preventing them from getting to it. We get creative and figure a way around it.

sometimes you just gotta do your best with what god gave you.

you think I always wanted to be a political cartoonist? I friggin' hate politics! And there is ALWAYS somebody who can draw better than me someplace in the world.

No. I always wanted to be a turtle farmer... well the climate isn't warm enough for outdoor boxturtles yet in Tacoma.

I love turtles. I hope one day to visit your Tacoma box turtle farm but I hope you never stop cartooning. Some may draw better but few can see to the heart of an issue and convey the emotion of it like you do.
