Latino Festival and Tall Ship Gloria from Colombia
This is one of the projects I'm currently working on:Tall Ship Gloria / Latino Festival
Date: August 2nd and 3rd 2008
Admission: Free entrance as well as ship boarding
Sponsors: Foss Waterway Seaport, Tacoma Tall Ships Org, and the Pierce County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Set to turn the heat up in Tacoma! United Festival Latino, taking place this August 2nd and 3rd, is back for its sixth year and gaining more momentum than ever. With 2 days of live music, vendor booths, street performers, folkloric dance, children’s activities and more; this year’s festivities are bound to turn up the heat in Tacoma.
In addition to all the fun, the 6th annual United Festival Latino is proud to
announce the visit of Gloria tall ship from Cartagena Colombia which will be visiting Tacoma as part of a goodwill mission. This colossal and momentous tall ship will be docked at Foss Waterway Seaport throughout the festival as well as the 2 days following the event. As a part of our children on board program thirty lucky children will have the chance to sail in with the Gloria on the day of its arrival before the main event.
United Festival Latino is breaking all the rules of traditional fairs and creating a
space where all Latino cultures can have a voice and be celebrated. “Though we will be highlighting Colombian culture we will have everything from Mariachis hailing from Mexico to Samba from Brazil”, says Sara Santos, one of the organizers of the event.
Santos also talked to our reporters about a slightly more serious side of the event, “United Festival Latino: Gloria Colombiana is also about celebrating the importance of connecting to our histories and sharing Latino culture with our communities.”
She explained that the festival will also serve as a tool to provide relief for hundreds of Colombians affected by the violent floods that have recently plagued central Colombia.
“We will be placing tubs throughout the festival for people to donate blankets and sweaters to be sent in a container to the affected people in Colombia” said Santos.
In addition, the festival will be selling Colombian coffee that is packaged by the YMCA in Colombia. All proceeds will go toward the running of essential programs at both the YMCA in Colombia and the International programs at the YMCA of Greater Seattle.
With this perfect mix of education, meaning and fun, Festival Latino: Gloria Colombiana is a recipe for success.
