Angst Free Chalk Off Art at Frost Park Today at Noon

What: Artistic Chalk Off Competition

When: Today at Noon

Where: Frost Park : 9th and Pacific Avenue

Who is invited: Everyone

What is today's theme: Artistic Angst in Tacoma

RR Anderson's Message to the Artistic Masses:

Collective Identity, Art, and Revitalization

What is the Tacoma art community's role in the process of urban revitalization, and what are the implications of this in how Tacoma's identity is perceived? For my research, I conducted nine interviews with ten Tacomans who self-identify as artists.

I found that for many artists in Tacoma, one major purpose of art is as a means of building community and creating a collective identity. Other artists feel that the conflation of art and community is problematic, and therefore criticism of art cannot be openly discussed.

The identity of Tacoma is compromised by the cycle of urban revitalization and gentrification as these artists make areas desirable and are consequently displaced by the upper classes.

First off...

HAHAHAAA!!! I love that photo compilation up there! Nice job. :)

Next: Sadly, I wont be able to show up to take any pics this week. I'm still out of town in Three Forks, Montana.

Also, I will not be around next week either, as I'll be in San Jose, California for that friday.

I should be back after that though!

by NineInchNachos on 5/15/2009 @ 10:34am
beautiful sunny day. should be a good chalk off

by Erik on 5/15/2009 @ 11:06am
"beautiful sunny day. should be a good chalk off"

Yeah. Sunny. Perhaps that will bring out some more fashion statements at Frost Park.

by Dave_L on 5/15/2009 @ 11:24am
Too funny.
I'm on my way to join the landing party.(just for a few minutes).
I've got my sunny non-hiptser black and grey on.

I'm on the hotness of California this fine day so won't be around for any photographage either. If I have a connection later I hope to cast my vote. Have fun all and I'll see everyone next week!

I VOTE for O'Tool!

Today's piece, with my alien character F-bombing the demonic Murphy's Law, is a multi-purpose reference...

1) Last spring, some of you may remember when I coined what is now my personal life motto, "Fuck Murphy", in my short mockumentary: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAJbWZ-Y-Pw

2) I have a habit of spewing profanity all over the Twittersphere whenever things go wrong.

3) My computer recently died (the motherboard may be fried), and I still didn't have it fully back to normal after having to wipe the C: drive to get rid of a nasty virus months back. This has, somewhat fittingly, delayed the start of filming for the feature-length version of last year's mockumentary. I'd planned to begin shooting this week, but I want to make sure I have a functional computer to get my footage directly into before I do so.

4) My bus was either early or never came, so during the time between when it should have come and when I got to Frost Park, I was, erm...VERY profane. I sent a string of profanity to Twitter via my phone...which has yet to actually show up on Twitter. Would that be irony?

by NineInchNachos on 5/15/2009 @ 6:09pm
adam's piece reminds me of that part with the devil from fantasia. I would rank this one of my top ten favorite Adam the Alien pieces.

I must vote for andrea's giant fist.

by Adam the Alien on 5/15/2009 @ 6:33pm
RR, edit your post! The pictures are showing up side-by-side for me, instead of up and down, which is breaking the entire thread!

by NineInchNachos on 5/15/2009 @ 6:40pm
sorry bro

by Adam the Alien on 5/15/2009 @ 6:52pm
Thread's still slightly broken, but much easier to read now, thank you.

I don't know if it's just IE or all browsers, and won't know until I get my computer back, as I can't install other browsers onto a computer that is not mine.

by scout on 5/15/2009 @ 7:18pm
I vote Thorax - elegantly simple and apropos with the dumb-shit new city position for Czar of Sustainability - whatever the hell that is -

As long as the city does something, anything that makes people feel good and the city look like they are current and everyone can feel good seems to be the criteria.

Although I do admire RR's piece with a nod to the Junior Birdman hand sign.

"Up in the air, Junior Birdman,
Up in the air, wild and free......."

by Adam the Alien on 5/15/2009 @ 8:25pm
Voting-wise, I'm torn between Andrea's double reference - both to our local secret society of cartoonists and to a beloved cartoon from my childhood - and Thorax's marvelous visual gag. Pity we don't have rank choice voting here...

by Erik on 5/15/2009 @ 8:37pm
Pity we don't have rank choice voting here...

We sort of do if one waits near the end to vote. But then there is the momentum effect.

by Adam the Alien on 5/15/2009 @ 9:32pm
Argh, it's tough, but I'm going to go with Thorax. I vote for Thorax.

by AngelaJossy on 5/15/2009 @ 9:58pm
I don't know why but RR's drawing is freakin' me out - hairy man boobs - ew! I almost threw up a little in my mouth. (gags)

Love the fish in the coy pond. Love the CLAW. I like the unknown artists shadow man and the Murphy Demon is the bomb! (My favorite Adam The Alien so far too) and I ALMOST voted for it but ....

I'm going to have to VOTE for the Carbon Footprint. Its simple, cleverly designed, currently relevant and just generally rockin'. GO Thorax!

by Earthdaughter on 5/15/2009 @ 10:14pm
I wish I understood better what the criteria are for voting! It's like asking is an apple inherently better than an orange or a kiwi!? So just voting on which drawing resonates most with me (heart chakra voting!), I vote for Ariel's garden pond. A peaceful oasis in the midst of all the sturm und drang!

That being said, I continue to be amazed by the creativity and artistic excellence of this community. You all rock!

Have time just for a few quick comments: It was good seeing the fellow participants, some of which I rarely get to see in person. No Kalakala for me to vote for this week. I always miss some of the double-references. Really powerful work by Adam and I like the bold steps he's taking in expanding his ideas. Good to see presence by nearby Belay Architecture. Spikey-hair guy's work shows you don't need a lot of different colors for a really nice piece. The other anonymous M-squared was by Mary, formerly of the Queen's Navy who just happened to be wandering by checking out the town after sailing her craft into the Thea Foss. She seemed most pleased after I pointed out the free chalk to her. She hasn't seen her kids in months, and hopefully she will show them this thread, Thorax's hang-ten-ey footprint was great.I like how Andrea's armored fist jumps out at you. Though not the reference, it reminds me of the old SAC emblem that I always thought was cool.

Andrea's work is especially impressive because she seemed to get a late start.
A different CLAW, from my childhood: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftgAG3Vnif8

But at this juncture my VOTE goes to David Boe's bright spoked-wheel eyeball. I liked the message, the Tacomaness, and I reveled in the sub-lime colors.

by Dianne on 5/15/2009 @ 10:58pm
I really liked the carbon footprint. I was going to vote for that until I saw Ariel's. The yellow flowers were so realistic they looked like they were growing straight up from the pond. So my vote goes to Ariel for awesome flowers.

Jeremy wasn't feeling well today. Struck down from reclaiming his title by a nasty cough. You guys were lucky LOL. Hopefully we will be back next week.

by mzkrug on 5/15/2009 @ 11:07pm
I'm voting for Ariel's beautifully realistic looking pond, fish and flowers, too. Everyone does such a fantastic job, it's hard to pick just one.

by Wings_of_Change on 5/15/2009 @ 11:29pm
AngelaJossy, I completely agree with how you feel about RR's piece. it freaked me out too.

I am extremely impressed with Adams piece, especially because he had about the same amount of time as me- roughly 20 minutes.

However, I think I'm gonna vote for myself, that pic blew me away, I didn't realize I had done that well, lol!

by Joel 413 on 5/15/2009 @ 11:31pm
I had lots of fun today, finishing my interactive tag piece in short order allowed me to really watch some of the other folks do their magic. Both Adam and Andrea arrived fashionably late and yet still produce such amazing work. Watching Andrea's focus and method is spellbinding as you're not quite sure what she's going to do next. And it seems as if whatever she's listening to in those magic headsets dictacts her pace and flow... but then again, what do I know.

Today was also a late start for anothe "A" artist as Ariel developed her pond in about 20 minutes, absolutely amazing folks.

But my VOTE is for Thorax O'Tool.

The amount of carbon laid down in that footprint is still embedded in my fingernails as I helped get all that black down. Just my contribution to this week's carbon footprint @ Frost Park.

Mrs. Joel 413 wants to cast her VOTE for Areil's Pond, with Adam's F-boms a close second. I told he rshe needs her own account, but she just glared at me.

by morgan on 5/16/2009 @ 12:02am
I vote Andrea!

by kaotix on 5/16/2009 @ 7:54am
I vote for Adam (if it's not to late) ...first for name loyalty ...second for bomb dropping!

by Erik on 5/16/2009 @ 3:47pm
Who won??!

by Adam the Alien on 5/16/2009 @ 6:26pm
If you've been waiting for me to count, I have two things to say:

1) Buh? How the devil did I become designated counter?

2) I am without a functioning computer, except at work. Until this is rectified, waiting for me could be a long wait.

Thorax - 7
Ariel - 5
Andrea - 2
David Boe - 1

TALLY OF ALL LEGAL VOTES (even if late):
Thorax - 7
Ariel - 5
Andrea - 3
David Boe - 1
Adam the Alien - 1

Ariel - 1
(Sorry, Mrs. Joel 413, you do need an account to vote. Don't glare at Mr. Joel 413, he doesn't control the rules - they were laid down before he started participating. We've allowed people to vote via spouses and/or parental units before, but only on the loophole that they had an account they were just too lazy to use. And could cite said account.)

Unless someone wants to double-check my counting, I'm going to declare that - no matter what way you cut it - Thorax O'Tool and his massive carbon footprint are the winners of this week's Frost Park Chalk-Off! Contratulations, Thorax!

by Joel 413 on 5/16/2009 @ 7:58pm
Mrs Joel 413 has an account (Reeciebird) but was too lazy to log on and vote herself.

so Ariel has 6.

by Erik on 5/16/2009 @ 8:23pm
Congrats Thorax!

by L.S.Erhardt on 5/17/2009 @ 11:37pm
I humbly accept my week-long reign as Master Blaster, #1 in Tacoma, yo

Furthermore, I thank those who made the correct moral decision to vote for moi.

RR's chalk drawing did not freak me out. What is freaking me out is the odd "text box and text outside of the gray shaded area of this thread. This is truly disturbing.

by Erik on 5/18/2009 @ 12:09pm
I usually post a picture of the winner at the end of the thread.

Does anyone have a good picture of the mysterious Thorax?

by NineInchNachos on 5/18/2009 @ 12:40pm
that's him above the footprint drawing his 'tag' on joel's piece. well parts of him anyhow

That, too, is courtesy of our intrepid Mr. Anderson. He's covering all of his angles to be sure to freak everyone out. :-D

Great video by the Tribune.

Here's the photo of Tribune reporter Rosemary Ponnekanti and the film crew RR was able to take as he was nearly overcome by the Paparazzi.

So, do I get to choose next week's theme? I've been listening to an awful lot of Kriss Kross lately and am feeling the 1991 vibe. Who else wants to relive the early 90s?

And for your viewing pleasure and Erik's posting needs, I present something other than the dark side of the moon: a self portrait. Njoi!

by Erik on 5/18/2009 @ 8:54pm
There he is....Thorax O'Tool, the greatest illustrator for the week in the universe...

by NineInchNachos on 5/18/2009 @ 9:31pm
hey lets try it out. weeks winner gets to pick the theme of the next one. Early 90's--artists intemperate as you wish. Torpedoes away!

Here's the article now online:

First it was a bunch of friends eating lunch in a downtown park. Then it was a challenge to see who could chalk the best picture. More people joined in, passers-by voted online, sponsors gave prizes and the Friday Frost Park Chalk Offs became a downtown Tacoma fixture through last summer and fall.

Now beginning their second season, the Chalk Offs are holding stead
