and in today's Volcano post 5 Things to do: Friday:
1. The Frost Park Chalk Challenge rules are simple: competitors pick a spot in the pavement at Ninth and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma and compose a piece of art with chalk. They have from noon to 1 p.m. to complete the work, and then photos, masses of them, are taken and posted to feedtacoma.com to be voted on. At the end of the day (midnight!) all votes are tallied, and the winner is declared.

|I can make it! I can make it! Although my quality of work will be greatly diminished by what I call "not swine flu."|
by ALT on 5/1/2009 @ 10:09am
|I just love that City Arts cover. :D|

|My pics are up! Absolutely perfect weather today. Too bad I got tons of other photography work I have to do at my office instead of being out enjoying the sun. :P

|Yeah. Jeremy also had a hospital on the right side of his piece. I could not figure out what kind of bloody meyhem Garfield was purportedly engaged in, but it was pretty severe.|
by Dianne on 5/1/2009 @ 6:39pm
|I vote for Jeremy. I haven't seen this side of Garfield. With two sons and three nephews I have learned to appreciate the blood and mayhem.
I did appreciate Jon's take on May Day.

|I love the flying pig. Sorry I missed out today. But, at 12 I was still over Montana.
I vote for Joel.
by dawntown on 5/1/2009 @ 8:36pm
|Joel for the win! Nice day for chalk action|
by jamesstoweart on 5/1/2009 @ 8:46pm
|I am voting for Jeremy. He is holding a chalk sword for Pete's Sake... that is like witchcraft or something. Julian Beever just crapped his pants looking at that. Also, I requested a severed Garfield arm and in under 5 minutes there was a severed Garfield arm right up there on the wall... clearly labeled and everything. This is, so far, no fooling, Jeremy's best Garfield art yet. He deserves my vote... and yours.
I for one am glad he is back. I wish we had more Garfield kids.
by morgan on 5/1/2009 @ 9:33pm
|Dawn: I love the scooter!
Jeremy: Your craft is getting to be amazing! Very creative!
Andrea: Best. Gnome. Ever.
I loved the May Day tributes but RR's was really fabulous with the incredible likeness and... I'm a fan of 3-D lettering. I vote for RR.
by KevinFreitas on 5/1/2009 @ 9:39pm
|Great stuff again out there this week. Love the scooter Dawn drew that was based off little Max's hat and it's tiny little scooters. Jeremy has become quite a little chalk wiz too! Love RR's stumping but Joel totally gets my vote for his somewhat early RR-esque piece. Well done sir and everyone! Beautiful day out there today.|

|here's my pics!
by NineInchNachos on 5/1/2009 @ 10:04pm
|the face of the pig is a really nice cartoon rendering. But the interactive element of Jeremy's garfield sword piece really tugs at my heartstrings. . .
Ok i thought about it. I'm going with Stowe. Jeremy gets my vote! Nice work everybody. Andrea's gnome gave me quite a chuckle too.
It was nice to see Dawn back in action! Nice scooter dude!
by NineInchNachos on 5/1/2009 @ 10:06pm
|also kevin's new avatar reminds me of kurt Kobain|
by mzkrug on 5/1/2009 @ 10:18pm
|I'm voting for Jeremy "The Garfield Kid", too. He's getting better & better all the time.|
by Joel 413 on 5/1/2009 @ 10:57pm
|Awesome turnout today. the weather was better than anticipated and the community was out in force. Speaking of out in force, what was that police officer saying?
I have to say the competition is pretty tough this week, I really liked Jeremy's sword and posing. But I'm gonna have to shill for my own pig this week and VOTE for Joel. I pulled that out of the air when my original idea wasn't manifesting on the sidewalk, and it turned out better than I thought... looking at the pictures.
by scout on 5/1/2009 @ 11:25pm
|I vote JEREMY|
by AngelaJossy on 5/1/2009 @ 11:26pm
|So hard to vote this week. I think the best art-wise is Andrea's rendering of the Tacoma Gnome. I was sure I was going to vote for it. But then I realized, I love the pig! Its got so many things I like: bright pink (my color!), humor (I'm a sucker for jokes about pandemics), pop culture reference, play on words (I love a good pun), flying animals (reminds me of a Pegasus which I adore) and text message slang (the bastardization of the English language that will surely end up in textbooks and dictionaries to be taught to our children's children - that is if our species survives the Swine Flu).
Yep, I vote for the other white meat. Go pig!
by Wings_of_Change on 5/1/2009 @ 11:54pm
|yep, Jeremy gets my vote too. The flying swine was a close second, but Jeremy's chalk sword hes holding showed alot more ingenuity than i have seen from him thus far. Go Garfield kid!|
by bluegodjanus on 5/1/2009 @ 11:56pm
|I'll vote for Jeremy (on the proper week, this time). I'm entertained by the label that was necessary for the cut-off arm.|
by Wings_of_Change on 5/2/2009 @ 12:10am
|so, as long as I did this right, it looks as though scores this week are as follows:
Jeremy( The Garfield Kid): 8
Congrats Jeremy on your first win!!
by Erik on 5/2/2009 @ 12:35am
|Congrats Jeremy! He showed a lot of mojo this week:
by Joel 413 on 5/2/2009 @ 12:47am
|My vote count come up:
But still Jeremy, Nice work Dude!
