Bill Clinton in Tacoma, Obama in Seattle

John McCain is well ahead for the Republicans.

However, Obama and Clinton appeared tied for the democrats after super Tuesday.

John Kerry was just in Hilltop earlier this week for Obama.

But now Washington State is at center stage.  And that includes Tacoma:

As the Super Tuesday votes were being tallied, Democratic rivals Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama were setting their sights on the next big prize: Washington.

After lagging behind Obama in getting a campaign up and running here, Clinton on Tuesday sent in a swarm of campaign staff from other states to help prepare for Saturday's precinct caucuses.

Obama's campaign announced Tuesday evening that he will make a campaign appearance Friday in Seattle.

Clinton also is expected to make a stop here. And her top campaign surrogate, former President Bill Clinton, is scheduled to appear Thursday night in Seattle and Friday morning in Tacoma.

Question: Are there Tacoma hotel accomodations that you would recommend to former president Clinton?  The Marriot?  Is the Murano ready?

Here is a spicey U Tube clip of Clinton I had never seen taking about "swift boating."

The Yes We Can - Barack Obama Music Video which is gaining alot of popularity

.

On the Republican side, almost anything seems possible. Washington's Republican caucuses have a history of favoring insurgent candidates — most notably in 1988, when they were dominated by supporters of televangelist Pat Robertson.

Heh. I was just talking about this video with another mom yesterday. Nice video, evokes an emotional response, but since I'm a mom of small children I'm (more or less) immune to emotional appeals. I'd like to see some concrete policy talk. (I'm still for Obama, but I think the campaign needs to do more to court my demographic.)

Funny. I will have to admit I will be voting for the candidate largely which I think can most likely win the general election.

It is nice to see the candidates come to Washington. It looks like Tacoma will end up getting one surragate from each party : Kerry and Bill Clinton.

As for the candidates themselves for the Ds, it looks like Obama will be the only one coming to Washington. Although others may have shown up earlier.

At any rate, Washington has always felt out of the loop in the nomination process because our primary has been so late. Its nice to see some action here. Kerry coming downtown was pretty cool.

Maybe Huckabee will come to Tollefson Plaza. He will have alot of support in Washington.

Update

And now Hillary will come to Seattle

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will make a campaign appearance Thursday evening in Seattle, a day before her Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama, arrives.

Clinton is scheduled to appear at event starting at 8 p.m. at Pier 30 on Seattle's waterfront.

"She sees Washington as a key state for her and a state where she can do well," said campaign spokeswoman Charla Neuman.

Clinton had originally planned to send her husband, former President Bill Clinton, to make appearances in Seattle, Tacoma and Spokane. But the campaign decided today to make a switch and send Sen. Clinton instead.

Here is the the latest from Grit City for what it is worth:

Here are details as of Wednesday night on planned visits by presidential candidates:

Hillary Clinton: Rally, 8 to 10 p.m. tonight, Pier 30, 2431 E. Marginal Way S., Seattle.

Barack Obama: Rally, 11 a.m. Friday, Seattle's KeyArena.

Mike Huckabee: Rally hosted by his wife, Janet, noon on Friday, Health Sciences Building at Northwest University, 5520 108th Ave. N.E., Kirkland.

Barack Obama: Rally hosted by his wife, Michelle, in Spokane on Friday. No further details were available.

Hilllary Clinton: Campaign organizers were searching for a venue in Tacoma for a rally on Friday.

I am sure we will find RR at the Huckabee event drawing his latest Tacomic.

Here's how the presidential race sits so far for the Ds.

A bit confusing:

n the all-important race for delegates to win the Democratic nomination, Hillary Rodham Clinton won 641 this week and Barack Obama won 633, CBS reported Wednesday morning.

No, wait: NBC declared that Obama won the lion's share of delegates in Super Tuesday balloting, 838 to Clinton's 834.

Obama was more optimistic: He gave himself 847 delegates to Clinton's 834.

By the end of the day, CNN put Clinton's overall total at 1,113 delegates to Obama's 963.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press count had Clinton at 1,045 and Obama at 960. AP, which USA TODAY uses as the official count, awarded Clinton 784 delegates in Tuesday's voting and Obama 764.

From the Columbian today:

We are "players:" Now that the results of Super Tuesday have been sliced, diced, analyzed, spun and counterspun, it is clear that this state truly matters in at least one of the two major parties' contests. So, Washington residents who want a say in whether Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama is the Democratic Party's nominee should show up Saturday at their precinct caucus.

The Democratic caucuses are so important that Clinton is coming for appearances in Seattle and Tacoma Thursday night and Friday; Obama will be in Seattle Friday; and his wife, Michelle, will visit Spokane the same day.

Romney's officially out of the race. Now it is McCain for the Rs.

For the Ds: Hillary or Obama?

Request: Can someone please remove out all of their Ron Paul signs from Tacoma now?

by thriceallamerican
on 2/7/2008 @ 9:50am
I believe Ron Paul is still officially in the race, so the signs will be sticking around for a bit.

McCain seems nearly-certain, but it is not a foregone conclusion...Romney may toss his delegates towards Huckabee and keep this thing alive at least for a little bit longer. However, I think none of the next several primaries/caucuses will be good for Huck, and should only help McCain sew this thing up.

Lawrence Lessig on why he supports Obama.

Should be required watching for any Democrats who are on the fence for who to support at the caucus on Saturday, or Obama supporters who want some excellent talking points.

20 minutes long, but well worth it.

so friday night Angela Davis was scheduled to speak in the UPS Fieldhouse. Davis is an amazing writer and activist, former political prisoner, has wonderful antiracist, feminist, anticlassist politics. so apparently hillary clinton is going to speak at UPS, in Angela's slot, in the Fieldhouse, so Angela gets bumped to earlier in the day in a crappy location.

that sucks. angela actually stands for change; hillary wants more of the same plutocratic rule.

More details on the Obama event. He will be there. Key Arena. Likely a very large crowd.

Perhaps this is a legitimate reason to go to Seattle:

Join Barack Obama for a special Stand for Change Rally in Seattle, Washington on Friday, February 8th. The event will be free and open to the public.

She was scheduled at a nurses rally at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma and at a Spokane town hall meeting.

Can you imagine being the person working for these campaigns trying to schedule appearances at the last minute? How many times have the plans changed? I can't believe they can pull these things off with so little planning and notice. Hillary is coming to UPS at 10:15am on Friday and a lot of people could have used some time to plan for this! I, for one, feel like Tacoma is some sort of pawn in an evil game of posturing. We weren't important enough for her until now?

According to a report on KING 5 tonight at 11pm, Hillary will be speaking near Tacoma at the University of Puget Sound. Yes, near. Everyone knows nothing good actually happens in Tacoma (sorry Michael). I suppose like my alma mater UPS has it's own zipcode which means it could be it's own area of town. Perhaps a map, according to KING 5's HD graphics people, could be created that shows all good things that happen in this area as happening nearby rather than in Tacoma itself. The world is not flat, Seattle, and you're not the ones drawing the map anymore. Bloggers are.

According to Clinton (on King5 news) we have huge deficit because of the war in Iraq that she voted for and has yet to admit she was wrong for that vote.... hmmmm

So she is rallying her troops to back her so she can get rid of the deficit she helped create? NICE

According to a report on KING 5 tonight at 11pm, Hillary will be speaking near Tacoma at the University of Puget Sound. Y

The demographic that Obama is doing the best in is with younger more highly educated people. She is going to UPS to try to thwart his efforts.

Its a horse race:

Hillary Clinton appears to be holding onto a relatively small lead in the delegate count over Barack Obama after Super Tuesday, but the final number is unclear in an increasingly tight race.

There are still outstanding delegates to be awarded in Illinois and Georgia, where Obama fared well.

The latest accounting shows Clinton with 1,000 delegates to Obama's 902. It takes 2,025 delegates to claim the Democratic nomination.

And the remaining states are thought to lean toward Obama. Especially Washington.

JCbetty and I are going to try to go to the Clinton event, I'll bring the camera.

Nice. Post pictures of both events.

By the way, as a bit of comparison, Key Arena holds 17,000 where Obama will be speaking.

UPS memorial fieldhouse has a capacity of 4500 where Clinton is appearing.

That might indicate how the candidates believe they are relatively doing in Washington.

And the remaining states are thought to lean toward Obama. Especially Washington.

That's really only safe to say for the remainder of February, which has a ton of caucus states (where Obama kicks ass), the D.C. area (high African American population), and other areas where Obama polls really well.

Early in March, we come up against Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, all of which have a ton of delegates and may swing a bit more on the Zeitgeist. (And given the effect of the Hispanic vote in California and Arizona, it will be interesting to see how Obama fares in Texas.)

Also, due to the proportional distribution of delegates, even winning a state is not enough to give either candidate a sizable advantage. The margins are going to have to be big for either of them to pull a clear lead. It could quite easily go all the way to the convention.

But I'm hoping Obama pulls huge margins in Washington and other states where he is polling well, and can look like a real frontrunner going into Texas/Ohio/Pennsylvania.

Just heard from Ensie and Frinklin heading to Key Arena in Seattle. Turns out they just missed getting in. They're full to capacity with 14,000 people in the stands and another 5,000 on the floor. She mentioned that as they're leaving there are still hundreds if not thousands of people still arriving. Dang. Let's just hope they drive home the "get out and caucus message".

Yeah, just saw a story on KOMO that KeyArena is at capacity and turning people away. And sounds like the UPS Fieldhouse is pretty darn fulled up for Hillary.

About 5,000 nurses cheer Clinton in Tacoma
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

TACOMA, Wash. -- Hillary Clinton is speaking about her health care policies to an audience of nurses at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.

It's billed as "Nurses for Hillary" and about 5,000 people packed the college gym, many waving signs that say "RNs for Hillary."

As KF mentioned, I ditched work for most of the day to drive up to the Obama event. By the time I got through traffic and found parking I knew there was a good chance I wouldn't get in so was not surprised during my walk through Seattle Center to pass people going the other way muttering about being turned away. I figured I had come that far I might as well stick around awhile and was pleased to hear, as I had hoped, that they would be broadcasting the program to those of us outside. The numbers I heard at the event were that there were 18,000 people inside and another 3,000 huddled outside.

It turns out that, though it was cold, I had a great seat. Senator Obama made a brief bullhorn speech to those of us outside the east entrance from a nearby stairway so I ended up being only 30ft or so from him. (I did take cell phone photos and video clips - I'm hoping Kevin can help with the posting of the least crappy ones.) I understand that he traveled to the other groups gathered outside as well, before heading inside for the main event. From my position outside I was able to view the monitors in the building so got to see the inside speech as well as hear it through the loudspeakers.

I wavered between going (maybe a once in a lifetime experience) and not going (not a huge fan of crowds or traveling through Seattle) but am very glad I ultimately decided to go. It was not only great from a historical standpoint (may have just seen the next president) but also it was so interesting to see the other people gathered there willing to freeze just to hear what this man would say. The crowd seemed a really good mix - there were 3 jr high girls next to me, 2 women in probably their 50's in front of me, a group of 18 to early 20s on my right with a married Seattlite couple in their 30's nearby. I saw a near even amount of men and women and a full color spectrum in the crowd.

This was my first political event and I plan to go to my neighborhood caucus tomorrow. I wouldn't have known about any of these events (or cared much if I did) if it weren't for all the FeedTacoma chatter so I thank you all for your thoughts, opinions, blogs and comments.
