Call To Artists: Come Chalk at Frost Park Today at Noon and Win a Valuable Prize

Today is the weekly chalk off competition at Frost Park located at 9th and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma at noon.

Stand tall bipedal ape...

"the shark may out swim you

the cheetah out run you

the swift out fly you

the capuchin out climb you

the elephant out power you

the redwood out last you

but you have the biggest gift of all

the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence

the gift of revulsion against its implications

the gift of foresight, something utterly foreign to the blundering short term ways of natural selection...

and the gift of internalizing the very [CHALK] cosmos"

Kudos on the graphic RR. One for the Frost Park promotional history books!

i'll finally be able to award Adam the Alien his MST3K dvd's

by KevinFreitas on 7/17/2009 @ 7:58am
Have a blast out there today everyone! I will be on my way to the coast so will miss out but will hopefully have 'net access tonight to vote. Cheers and I'll see y'all next Friday!

by NineInchNachos on 7/17/2009 @ 9:11am
BREAKING NEWS: if you dine at India Mahal and tell the management you're with the Frost Park Chalkies, you'll get a FREE SOFT DRINK BEVERAGE (with your meal)!

i'll finally be able to award Adam the Alien his MST3K dvd's

Actually, you won't. I'm afraid I'm missing out this week, as I'll be in transit to Seattle during the typical chalktastic time slot.

I'm also holding on to the $40 gift coupon to Crown Bar and the backpack it's inside of, so Stowe (or Andrea, I guess?), either arrange with me to get it or I'll bring it next week.

by NineInchNachos on 7/17/2009 @ 9:38am
curse you adam!

by Dave_L on 7/17/2009 @ 9:39am
... if you dine at India Mahal...
Lord knows I love RR's mural, but I'm going to ask them for a bucket of water next week like I have a few times in the past to wash the wall, plus stay for a meal. They work so hard with such a small staff (Erik and others can elaborate better than I) and I've neglected eating there in a while. Both eating establishments on that intersection like what the chalk-off brngs to the park. Erik showed me that the Teriyaki joint up across the link rail is also a great value, too.

by ALT on 7/17/2009 @ 10:00am
I'll be missing this one too - Some friends and I have plans to go to Penrose park. Still, I'm going to rock out with my chalk out at the Gig Harbor art festival tomorrow.

by Joel 413 on 7/17/2009 @ 10:25am
I'm out for the next few weeks :( Last day before vacation has me in the office today, then two weeks away for some much needed R'n'R (Not to be confused with RR). Have a great day, drink lots of water, and don't forget the sunscreen!

by Erik on 7/17/2009 @ 1:21pm
I can't believe so many people are gone this week. Where's the dedication to Art in Tacoma? I guess I can't complain though as I missed today's chalk off too. I hope someone is able to post pictures of the entries.

by L.S.Erhardt on 7/17/2009 @ 1:32pm
So, here's the 5 from this week's meager showing:

I like the moon probe and muppet, but my vote goes to me (in true fashion). Gotta love the living, the 'bots and the undead uniting under the Greenlandic flag. God bless our icy shores!

by daydreamer on 7/17/2009 @ 1:37pm
voting for Thorax!

by marumaruyopparai on 7/17/2009 @ 1:38pm
Wow! Is that Wembley up there? Sure looks like it. Fraggles FTW!

by L.S.Erhardt on 7/17/2009 @ 1:46pm
Some detail:

by Dave_L on 7/17/2009 @ 1:55pm
Looking good so far. Is that a self-portrait of Altered Chords, or did he pose?
I had to stay at work today also. I did recieve a photo from another participant who is currently on a plane stealing away to another location.

Numbers are in the pits today, but I bet it was still a great show.

by Zanna on 7/17/2009 @ 1:56pm
I like them all. The stick figure makes me smile - The voices in my head make him/her talk to me. I must resist the voices telling me to vote for the stick figure.

My fingers typing want to vote for the moon probe, that is just down right cool drawing. Wish I could see it in person.

Shout out to the puppet too, it looks great.

I am voting with my heart - Thorax my vote is for you. -- (Zanna that Aqua Panda)

by Mandiferous on 7/17/2009 @ 1:56pm
Voting for the Fraggle!

by NEAL on 7/17/2009 @ 2:13pm
I am following the live tweets of the Apollo mission, just like 40 years ago, so I feel a kinship with RR's lander base. My vote is for his work.

TOT, I like the unity message.

by NineInchNachos on 7/17/2009 @ 2:54pm
My surveyor 1 moon lander robot is a tribute to my Boeing/Hughes Aircraft engineer Grandpa (who died on Sunday).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surveyor_1

some of my other grandpa's projects include: B17, B29, AWACS

by tacomachickadee on 7/17/2009 @ 2:54pm
I so vote for the Fraggle.

by kaotix on 7/17/2009 @ 2:57pm
I vote for mine, in honor of my co-artists Cory K.
But Thorax, I think yours is the better piece.

by kaotix on 7/17/2009 @ 3:00pm
And hugs to marumaruyopparai for knowing this Fraggle's name!

by PowerSurg on 7/17/2009 @ 3:10pm
Yeah My vote goes to Adam B aka Kaotix for his fraggle

by Darkain on 7/17/2009 @ 3:11pm
My pics are now up. Not a whole heck of a lot to showcase this week, sadly. Here are a couple quick highlight pics, with the full set over at my site as always.

www.darkain.com/gallery/2399_Tacoma_Side...

OH, and I have also added a new tool to help keep my site nice and easy to find things. I've implemented tags for the main gallery pages. I've added one for Frost Park, so that way anyone can go back and easily see pics that I've done at previous gatherings.

by Altered Chords on 7/17/2009 @ 3:17pm
I love how I used space in my art today. Nevertheless, I cast my vote for RR Anderson.

by Mark Monlux on 7/17/2009 @ 4:02pm
I'm sorry I could not attend. I'm at my Aunt's house in Alturas, California. (Try to find it on a map.)

My vote this week is for Thorax O'Toole's.

by NineInchNachos on 7/17/2009 @ 4:21pm
man. Adam's Fraggle needs some black charcoal shadow / outlines. Maybe he avoided using black just to be annoying like Mark Monlux and his frustrating no black rule.

.........why do you people torment me with your no black elitism?

FIE!

by KevinFreitas on 7/17/2009 @ 8:04pm
I gotta give it up (and my vote) for RR's Surveyor because I still want to be an astronaut and that's a great tribute to his grandpa. Cheers to him and to today's chalkers! The fraggle character is cool as is Thorax's zombie/robot unity message.

by Dave_L on 7/17/2009 @ 9:50pm
For the first time in many weeks, and easy choice for me. For many reasons, one VOTE for Ryan and his Grandpa.

I vote for the piece with the skull.

by morgan on 7/17/2009 @ 10:21pm
I vote for RR - the personal story behind it adds much meaning. I send my condolences.

by Libby on 7/17/2009 @ 10:46pm
zombies. because i kinda feel like one tonight. i vote thorax.

by NineInchNachos on 7/17/2009 @ 10:48pm
Adam does Fraggle Rock

some kind of alien lifeform

Adam's Wembley

wild eyed look like chuckie

altered cords, Elizabeth & Mystery Chalker

These two provided amusing commentary. Note the Mystery Chalker with two sons. I've never seen anybody bring a ladder to frost park before. That guy is awesome.

Thorax O'Tool's Unity

Some kind of propaganda about being friends with Robots and Zombies? Not on my watch Trotsky.

Surveyor by Hughes Aircraft

Ah the predecessor to Apollo moon lander. The surveyor landers proved that the shock absorber leg systems worked. Also tested the soil to show the landers wouldn't sink into moon quicksand.

by Joel 413 on 7/17/2009 @ 10:51pm
There are so many things that RR's piece stirs up inside me. But all the pieces this week were win worthy. My vote is for RR, but every one deserves to win.

by NineInchNachos on 7/17/2009 @ 10:58pm
I vote for Adam's Fraggle. My brother and I used to watch that show all the time.

by kaotix on 7/18/2009 @ 9:17am
It's not elitism...it's chalk purism.

by Erik on 7/18/2009 @ 1:11pm
Who won?

by Joel 413 on 7/18/2009 @ 4:18pm
If I counted right RR got 7 and Thorax got 4, Fraggle got 3, and then there were other scattered votes.

Congrats RR!

by kaotix on 7/18/2009 @ 4:39pm
*ponders* I'm not so sure about these counts. This is what I come up with.

daydreamer - Thorax
Thorax O'Tool - Thorax
Mark Monlux - Thorax
Zanna - Thorax
"Libby" - Thorax

marumaruyopparai - Adam
Mandiferous -Adam
NineInchNachos - Adam
PowerSurg - Adam

Altered Chords -RR
KevinFreitas - RR
Dave_L - RR (Ryan?)
morgan - RR
Joel 413 - RR

Erik - New Guy w/ Ladder

I'll double check.

by kaotix on 7/18/2009 @ 4:46pm
NEAL - RR

by kaotix on 7/18/2009 @ 4:46pm
tacomachickadee - Adam

by kaotix on 7/18/2009 @ 4:48pm
kaotix - Adam

by PowerSurg on 7/18/2009 @ 4:51pm
I count a tie. Both RR and Adam have 6.
I'm really suprised that there isn't some voting system that would allow each user to vote once for every "poll" put up.

by PowerSurg on 7/18/2009 @ 5:00pm

In the event of a tie, I suggest a duel to the death.

Round one.... FIGHT!

by Joel 413 on 7/18/2009 @ 8:05pm
OK, I recounted with a piece of paper this time, last time I just counted in my head and there was a viscious battle between Adam and the Fraggle the first time I counted... so uh, with paper, there wasn't that confusion. Using the official rules of having to use the word 'VOTE' in your vote. The count is as follows:

Total official valid votes (16)
RR - 6
Adam - 5
Thorax - 4
Guy on a ladder - 1

Power surge's count is correct if you count by intention. but we do state in the body above to use the word VOTE.

by Adam the Alien on 7/18/2009 @ 10:48pm
Damn, I could've swayed things toward the other bearer of the world's oldest and mightiest name if I had only returned home before midnight last night. Alas, I was not at a computer until long after voting time had ceased.

by Erik on 7/19/2009 @ 8:14am
Assuming Joel's vote count holds up showing RR Anderson the winner, RR won. Congrats RR!

YOU WON:

$50 eating gift coupon! Ask about the weekly special meals served on the grounds historically known as the TACOMA SILVER FOX FARM. Eat pancakes haunted by the souls of a thousand condemned fox families!
