by Earthdaughter on 6/19/2009 @ 8:26am | Mark this event, my Chalkie Friends: I'm unable to come up with a postable comment to this pic! Congrats, RR. You've done the improbable. (This post doesn't really qualify since it's a post about why I'm not posting! Hmmmm. Or does it?) See you at noon when it will be clear and the pavement dry! I've got the Free Chalk bucket. |
by Dave_L on 6/19/2009 @ 12:10pm | Shoot, I dinked-around too long on other posts and it's too late to head to FP, haha. But I guess I'll leave less of a carbon footprint if I stay put. I look forward to the photos. |
by Dave_L on 6/19/2009 @ 12:34pm | Speaking of Geoducks, (or gooey ducks), as we wait for photos of the Chalk-Off, perhaps you'd enjoy The Geoduck Song, as released on one of 27th Legislative District Representative Dennis Flannigan(D)"s annual releases for share and trade: blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2007/12/365-days-...

by NineInchNachos on 6/19/2009 @ 1:16pm | will post my pics later tonight. astonishing work from Eliot and Adam. Adam the alien really went through the roof this time. Personally I solved the transit problem with my sketch. |
by dawntown on 6/19/2009 @ 1:50pm | Shoot, I really wanted to post a theme this week, but like Kevin, I've been a bit swamped with work. Look forward to the pics! |

Let the voting begin. |
by Twisty on 6/19/2009 @ 2:16pm | Wow... I get the first vote this week, eh?
All-righty then. I'm voting for the very timely, not-quite-astronomically correct and slighty Paganistic... SOLSTICE! |
by Mark Monlux on 6/19/2009 @ 2:32pm | Because I dream of the day when there will be a train from Tacoma to the SeaTac Airport....
I vote for RR's "Imagine!" |
by NineInchNachos on 6/19/2009 @ 2:42pm | dave L, that geoduck mp3 is highly inappropriate especially for innocent ears. |
by reeciebird on 6/19/2009 @ 2:54pm | I am voting for the beautiful Solstice by Joel. |
by DumpsterDivingDiva on 6/19/2009 @ 4:52pm | I VOTE for RR.
I can totally IMAGINE! |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 6/19/2009 @ 5:19pm | Isn't the geoduck the official Washington State bird? |
by kaotix on 6/19/2009 @ 5:20pm | I vote for solstice |
by Darkain on 6/19/2009 @ 5:22pm | The "ladies" wanted to head out shopping after checking out the chalk-off today, so yeah, I'm a couple hours late on getting pics out. :P Luckily Joel has the all our bases covered. I'm just here for them "crazy" shots then. ;)

by tacomachickadee on 6/19/2009 @ 5:56pm | I vote for Joel's Solstice. Adam, I'll make it up to you ... with pizza ... someday. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 6/19/2009 @ 6:33pm | Joel's is pretty slick.
But RR takes the cake. I cast my vote for the Nefarious Mr. Anderson. And I'll see YOU next Friday @ Frost Park. |
by kuuipokilika on 6/19/2009 @ 7:03pm | I vote for Adam (not the alien)
I have never seen anyone do Sasquatch before It's original. The attention to detail is astounding. |
by jamesstoweart on 6/19/2009 @ 7:32pm | It was Father's Day 2 days early at the Stowe house. They had me running around. Sorry I missed the fun.
Great work out there this week. Gotta go with Joel... his Solstice piece is excellent, best piece he has ever done! Great job Joel. |
by morgan on 6/19/2009 @ 9:22pm | I vote Solstice!
I hope everyone has experienced the Fremont Solstice Parade. Not to be missed! |
![]() by mskasea on 6/19/2009 @ 9:23pm | I vote for Lada! |
by AngelaJossy on 6/19/2009 @ 9:37pm | I love RR's futuristic Jetson Tacoma. I love Adam the Alien's Chinese dragon. I love love Joel's Solstice (great light effect on the planet earth!) but I'm gonna have to vote for Electric Elliot's guy with cement hat. There's just something creative out the placement and the idea. Good job everyone. I can't wait until I live downtown and I can be there in person at Frost Park whenever I want! |
by NineInchNachos on 6/19/2009 @ 9:40pm | be prepared to change your votes ;)![]() electric elliot's blue bird's nest. sea gulls were attacking the eggs thinking they were real. ![]() ![]() In Tacoma Tomorrow Land we will all travel in these plastic mushrooms at a velocity well over 5 MPH! David Boe can be heard yelling something about the turns... ![]() Adam the alien was so intent on PSP he drew a personification of his Id.. like the monster at the ending of forbidden planet. ![]() The other Adam drew a moving tribute to the blackwater. It was very sad. I didn't get any pics of the attractive young ladies this time around :( |

by NineInchNachos on 6/19/2009 @ 10:15pm | so yeah, Amy McBride told me that my listserve postings were not going through the listserv till the ultra-attractive "Cultural Arts Specialist" Naomi returns from vacation to moderator-approve them. SO I WAS UNABLE TO MAKE PEOPLE UNCOMFORTABLE with the GEODUCK frost park PROMOTION. my notice about the JH Kunstler lame public art podcast was also delayed: kunstlercast.com/shows/KunstlerCast_69_P... |
by Adam the Alien on 6/19/2009 @ 11:38pm | Joel's piece is pretty epic. I do believe I can confidently say it's his best piece yet. It may be one of THE best pieces.
However, I want pizza, and I've never drawn a Chinese dragon before in my life. I think it turned out pretty well for pulling it out of my ass. So I am going to selfishly VOTE for myself. |
by Joel 413 on 6/19/2009 @ 11:39pm | I love Adam the Alien's recent psychedelic theme he's had going on lately, also I think he's drawn some form of monster 6 out of the 12 weeks so far... perhaps this is his way of exercising his demons.
I like RR's solution to the light rail issues. A people mover is exactly what the Imagineers at Disney thought the world of tomorrow would hold, that and the people mover conveyor belts... are we getting those back on the 12th ave hill climb? I was very excited by all the new artists. People are really starting to take advantage of the free chalk.. however... have you noticed that the walk-ups always tend to grab blue? Why is that? But I'm voting for myself this week. While not astronomically accurate, it was fun to draw. |
by NineInchNachos on 6/19/2009 @ 11:51pm | I vote for RR's pizza mover |
by NineInchNachos on 6/19/2009 @ 11:52pm | ms. darcy votes for the nest. |
by crockawaddy on 6/19/2009 @ 11:52pm | Ooooh! Ooooh! Oooh!
I vote for Adam the Alien's colodul dragon! Nice change of pace for the kid.. |
by ~Trevor on 6/19/2009 @ 11:53pm | My vote goes to Adam. He's been growing a lot in his chalk art lately, and I think this is the culmination of a lot of hard work. He earned the pizza! |
by crockawaddy on 6/19/2009 @ 11:55pm | BTW - This Greener loves the geoduck picture popsted above...
That's my college mascot!! |
by Joel 413 on 6/20/2009 @ 12:14am | I don't know if as the Official Vote counter I can officially count this week, so someone best verify these results: Total votes: 19 Joel: 7 RR: 4 Adam the Alien: 3 Electric Elliot: 2 Adam: 2 Lada: 1 And in self-aggrandizing congratulations: GO ME! |
![]() by NEAL on 6/20/2009 @ 12:33am | Go you! |
by Adam the Alien on 6/20/2009 @ 1:02am | Much as I wanted that pizza, you do deserve it, Joel. Your rendering of celestial bodies caught me by surprise - I'm not sure if you noticed, but I had to be reminded that it was your square I was looking it. It's not your usual style - something very new, and very awesome. You done the inner planets proud, sir. also I think he's drawn some form of monster 6 out of the 12 weeks so far... I'm returning to my doodling roots. If you were to look at old math notebooks and peechee folders, you'd find a lot of crazy creatures and superheroes that were also crazy creatures with large wings and pointy ears and lots of teeth and claws and impossible, gravity-defying hairdos. Though, working with No. 2 pencils and ball-point pens, I never had any idea how colorful some of these creatures actually were. |
by Adam the Alien on 6/20/2009 @ 2:03am | Side note: I think Tacoma's transportation needs would be resolved if Sound Transit or Pierce Transit would just throw its hat over the wall to develop the flying car. |
by Dave_L on 6/20/2009 @ 12:51pm | I'm not on listserv, but why couldn't Naomi have gone on vacation when I was in the Frost Park Promotion, haha.
I wasn't near the interwebs yesterday after the photos were posted, so I couldn't cast a vote. It would have been a tough call. I would have loved to see Adam win the much-desired pizza with his crazy dragon. Lots of color, and I bet it looks good from afar. (There's this tiny utility-vault lid in the sidewalk down hill, and I wonder how much chalk dust has washed in there so far.) Of course Joel pulled off a beautiful scene that just seems natural for chalk (although I've been afraid how much charcoal I assumed it would need). I also dig NPRR's (Twisty's) mild critique of the technical innacuracy. The bird nest scene was super cool. Nice variety of other ones all over, sea-creature, etc. RR once again chalks what I wish I could draw, and something really retro. Kind of like the World's Fair GM Futurama exhibit. And those scenes of the future that my old Childcraft Books said would happen. (Of course his scene will become obsolete when jet-packs become commonplace.) If only Boe and RR could mind-meld their imaginations. Well, maybe not. I'm heading down to Learning Sprout now for playday, so I'll check the pieces out in person. |
by Erik on 6/20/2009 @ 3:41pm | Nice work Joel. Congrats! |
