For the audacious OF HEART, this is your chance to literally draw upon the publicly funded resources of the City--Literally the City of Tacoma itself is your canvas.

Chalk Off Inspiration Video
Here's a Chalk Off inspiration video by chalk master Julian Beever. He shows off a few tricks here and is painfully good. No one else seems to be even close to him. Wouldn't it be cool to have him come to Frost Park one day? We got Kunstler to come to Tacoma. Hmmm
See everyone at Frost Park.

|The Frost Park Chalk-Off's big screen debut is tonight! Most people have probably already seen Adam The Alien's use of Frost Park for his unfortunately cursed 72 Hour Film Festival entry, but the keen observer may have noticed a second team filming at the same event.
Could it be connected to the horribly ironic deaths of two noted Tacoma urbanites? Find out tonight, 7 P.M. at the Rialto!

Wield that wiener, Dude! It IS all about the hot dogs, after all!

|I'm tempted to vote for the boat, or the fist, or the cyclist, but I've gotta go full force in for TROGDOR THE BURNINATOR!!!! (aka Elle's dragon)|
by Elle on 5/9/2008 @ 2:46pm
|I'm going to have to vote for myself on this one. Simply because I'm sick and need all the help I can get. I nearly fell asleep in my plate at Paddy Coyne's after completing that.|

|The Tacoma theme doesn’t seem to be adhered to all the time, but each week is full of great surprises. I gotta go with my immediate gut feeling with Andrea’s frog monster jumping out of my screen. Whether natural, or a result of years of study (both?), I admire how she can create such a strong effect with relatively restrained use of chalk. And freaking realism to boot. On the other hand I do admire Steve’s ability to get such total color saturation. My honorable mention and my very close second is the timely “Mom, I love you†by anonymous, and the cat by Oleg(?).
(Camera shy; glad I was able to avoid the group photo today :-) )
by NineInchNachos on 5/9/2008 @ 4:07pm
|I have no choice but to vote for Andrea's frog as it is a prime example of life imitating art--more specifically the art of adamthealien's 72hr film where Andrea is asked to draw a frog instead of her skywolf. Where does the movie stop and life begin? Nobody is keeping track anymore.|
by ensie on 5/9/2008 @ 4:26pm
|Too much good stuff! I am torn! Stowe's fantastic fist o' meat...RR's incredible fence kicking sausage...Lance's gorgeous ship...Dawn's bicycle sign...Izenmania's ever watchful eye...Elle's detailed dragon...
But I have to go with Andrea's frog. The frog is amazing. And vicious.
by Tacomite on 5/9/2008 @ 4:42pm
|Everyone brought their A-game with them this week. It's amazing the art that can be created in just an hour. I'm going to have to go with Elle this week although Stowe's 'angry fist of God (with weiner)' is pretty close second. I will also give an honorable mention to Dawn's bicycle. Great work by everyone!|
by Erik Hanberg on 5/9/2008 @ 4:45pm
|I'm casting my ballot for the frog.
It freaks the hell out of me and I fear that if I don't vote for it, it'll hunt me down.
by beerandhotdogs on 5/9/2008 @ 4:54pm
|My vote's for Stowe...
by KevinFreitas on 5/9/2008 @ 5:11pm
|I'm for Lance's tall ship. Just beautiful and, though much of the art is beautiful, it sits so well on that wall that I wish it could be preserved as permanent. Well done everybody! See you next week!|
by Lance Kagey on 5/9/2008 @ 5:20pm
|Andrea Trenbeath, The frog. or is that an iguana? gila monster? You are very talented and I graciously bow to your skill. Beautiful.
by Erik on 5/9/2008 @ 5:28pm
|Once again, the level of the entries out performs the previous week. Any number of these would have cleaned house in prior weeks.|
I am tempted to vote for RR's just because the theme is so strong for the removal of the WSHM destructive fence downtown.
Lance's entry is just plain beautiful and Elle, Stowe, and Dawn have strengths of their own.
I have no choice but to vote for Andrea's frog as it is a prime example of life imitating art--more specifically the art of adamthealien's 72hr film where Andrea is asked to draw a frog instead of her skywolf.
Yep. I think Andrea pulled it off with her monster frog. It jumps off the pavement and the work on the eye and nose are pretty incredible. I will vote for the monster frog.
Here's the close up:
RR calls it Andrea's Killer Frog Lizard Beast
It works perfect for Adams film he worked on for the 72 hour film festival which involved a frog. Adam recruited Andrea for the film at the end of the last Frost Park Chalk Off. The movie immortalizes Frost Park Chalk Offs.
Andrea Trenbeath, The frog. or is that an iguana? gila monster? You are very talented and I graciously bow to your skill. Beautiful.
Yeah, what Lance said. Plus, she bled on the pavement drawing the monster frog.
by NineInchNachos on 5/9/2008 @ 6:00pm
|what I love about the lance/beautiful angel chalk arts is that they are 001 (or one off) beautiful angel originals that once posted, can not be squirreled away by near-do-well art collectors.

|The Tall Ship the Lance Kagey created was awesome! It's suitable for framing! My vote is for Lance!|
by Room To Grow on 5/9/2008 @ 7:48pm
|I vote for Elle's dragon.|
by jenyum on 5/9/2008 @ 8:24pm
|The frog, the dragon, the ship, the fence destroying weaner and the victory weaner. Oh, all of them, I guess, they are all awesome this week.
....but I guess I have to be faithful 100% and vote for Stowe :))
by tacomachickadee on 5/9/2008 @ 8:30pm
|Wow. I vote for Andrea's frog! So much awesomeness this week, but that frog really caught my eye ... plus I love the tie-in to the Destiny of the Gnome video, which you can link to from www.tacomagnome.blogspot.com. So much T-town lovin' ...|
by Courtney on 5/9/2008 @ 8:49pm
|Although the hot dog in hand was great and my husband is always a winner I am voting for Elle. |
With special mention for the killer wiener and the tall ship.
by jamesstoweart on 5/9/2008 @ 8:57pm
|For me it was a toss up this week between Lance's tall ship and the unstoppable frog monster.
Even my blatant enlistment of other last minute chalk minions could not stop the foul beast's horrible croaks of victory.
I succumb to the frog... THIS WEEK.
by ALT on 5/9/2008 @ 10:29pm
|Now I know that in the past I've abstained from voting, choosing instead to plug my ears while singing LA LA LA very loudly.
This time however I'm going to hang up my self-imposed voting rules - and vote for my Mon-Frog. Because this green grotesquery is the representative of a group effort, it is not for myself alone. It is for the creative souls who contributed their time and talent to Adam's fantastic (but unfortunately ill fated) short film.
-Thanks for the impromptu inspiration today, Adam!
by Elle on 5/9/2008 @ 10:33pm
|The photos of Andrea's frog are much different than the drawing looked in person. It was cool in person, but for some reason in the photos it leaps off of the pavement. It's kinda creepy.|
by Adam the Alien on 5/9/2008 @ 10:48pm
|I vote for Andrea!|
by morgan on 5/9/2008 @ 11:14pm
|My vote goes to RR this week.
It's about Tacoma. It kicks some ass. And it has a mean wiener. I've never seen a meaner wiener.
What more could you ask for?
by AP on 5/9/2008 @ 11:58pm
|RR. Game, set, match.|
by Erik on 5/10/2008 @ 12:42am
Looks like Andrea has secured a pretty clear victory prevailing in Episode V.
A total of 24 votes were cast
Here is the result:
This time however I'm going to hang up my self-imposed voting rules - and vote for my Mon-Frog
If it relieves any guilt Andrea, you would have prevailed without the vote you cast for yourself. Plus, three of the challengers voted for your piece. Finally, someone somewhere said "[i]f you don't toot your own horn, there won't be any music."
The self imposed voting rule has now been discarded by a good number of the challengers and does not seem to be very applicable in Frost Park.
by Erik on 5/10/2008 @ 12:56am
|Thus, Andrea prevails in Frost Park Chalk Off Episode V. Looks like she may have anticpiated the win beforehand given her aggressive "chalk gesture."
Stowe had a strong chalk submission, but not quite enough for him to keep his title from being pulled from his grasp.
Andrea's win is also significant as it represents the first challenger to pile up two wins making her a stong contender for the title of "Best Illustrator in the Universe of Tacoma" for the entire year.
The sponsor and prize for next week is very unique and will allow the victor to live like a king or queen, and lord over downtown for a night. The highest valued prize to date by far. More later.
by NineInchNachos on 5/10/2008 @ 8:15am
|Yes the photos are one of the most enduring aspects of this event.
I suspect the up coming prize will be most unusual by any standard.
by ALT on 5/10/2008 @ 1:57pm
|Wow - actually I'm rather surprised by the outcome. Reading through the thread, many of the entries seemed to run neck-and-neck.
If it relieves any guilt Andrea, you would have prevailed without the vote you cast for yourself. Plus, three of the challengers voted for your piece.
Yeah Erik, It does a bit. I really felt compelled this time to cast a vote for the creature in support of Adam's film - and to thumb my nose at Murphy.
R.R, Lance, James: Thank you all. I was moved and honored upon reading your votes for the entry, especially coming from such powerfully talented opponents.
And thank you Adam. If you hadn't walked by and told me to make it a frog, it would have been some arbitrary t-rex.
by ALT on 5/10/2008 @ 10:09pm
|Say, can anyone out there tell me how I go about collecting the prize?
I'd like to donate the certificate to Adam; hot dogs may not fix a broken camera, but they'll fill an empty stomach (temporarily). Can I just sanction that the certificate go to Adam?
I get the RED HOT potable flask, though buddy.
by Erik on 5/10/2008 @ 10:28pm
|Say, can anyone out there tell me how I go about collecting the prize?
Yes. I can. There is a method for it and the last sponsor photo for it similar to these at Blackwater Cafe. I will contact you tomorrow.

Maybe it's a good thing Andrea won.

|The frog is a little scary.
That's funny. Battle art of sorts. Glad to see the chalk piece get a little more mileage.

Andrea Trenbeath Lowen aka "LupinGoddess" collects the spoils of victory after prevailing in Episode V.

This week... I am retaking the title!
