Chalk Off Today Offers *Lucrative* Prizes From Chris Van Vechten
Today is the weekly chalk off competition at Frost Park at 9th and Pacific Avenue
THE PRIZE FOR THE CHALKIE VICTOR : Lucrative prizes from Tacoma School Board Candidate Chris Van Vechten
(See this week's prize post.)
RR ANDERSON's inspirational message to Tacoma's Artists and artistic spectators:
RR Anderson
Collective Identity, Art, and Revitalization III
"Sean, the co-owner of The Helm Gallery, told me that most of the art shown at The Helm comes from outside Tacoma, and the gallery is currently going out of business because local art sells [$200 dollar range being the magic number]; non-Tacoma art does not.
He said that most galleries in town show only local artists because local buyers want contact with the artists from whom they are buying. They support community by purchasing art. A piece of local art on the wall makes possible a conversation about the artist and his or her work, and it encourages pride in the local art scene."

by KevinFreitas on 6/5/2009 @ 2:07pm | Here are my shots:
I know exactly who I want to win and I vote Stowe! Well done everyone -- great day out there especially since it was 150 degrees. |
by NineInchNachos on 6/5/2009 @ 2:24pm | will be posting my photos later today. It was fun to see andrea in her THE NEW TAKHOMAN fedora. My son also chalked a few chicken scratches for the first time. Also I got a hug from LANCE of Beautiful Angle (I couldn't go to the creative thing cuz I was shoveling 4 cubic yards of TAGRO out of the alley... (only found one used condom)). |
by NineInchNachos on 6/5/2009 @ 2:25pm | also Erik I think your flickr pics are set to private.. cant see em! |
by Mark Monlux on 6/5/2009 @ 2:32pm | I found a lot of art out there. Here is a link to my photostream www.flickr.com/photos/markmonlux/sets/72... and below are some photos of just the art.

Peace Out |
by Mark Monlux on 6/5/2009 @ 2:33pm | I vote for Tacoma Beaver! You should too! |
by Adam the Alien on 6/5/2009 @ 2:38pm | Mark - the WASL piece was a superb example of creative art theft, and it was done by Joel. He took the art I did last week and turned it from a depiction of me vs. C.L.A.W. and turned it into a statement about Chris (the knight) and the educational system (the monster).
And, hey - not only did Joel steal my art, but he stole my schtick of stealing other people's art. Double art theft! Very cunning of him. |
by Mark Monlux on 6/5/2009 @ 2:39pm | Oops. Here is one I missed.
Brie and Pat |
by NineInchNachos on 6/5/2009 @ 2:41pm | hey mark, if you add a 'tacoma' tag to your photos they'll show up in the feed tacoma photo page :) |
by Adam the Alien on 6/5/2009 @ 2:48pm | I wish I'd managed to get out an hour early, like I'd planned. My piece was originally going to be even more elaborate, and include more elements of my personal journey through unhappy emotional states...I was also going to include a bit more in the way of my journey since. But time is a cruel, cruel mistress.
Still, I like how it turned out. I think my "falling through the cracks of the educational system" idea, in the middle, turned out better than I expected. I find it very fitting that Chris was sponsoring the chalk-off this week, and that a lot of people themed around the educational system, since the very flawed educational system played a very large role in my downward emotional spiral, which peaked with my near-suicide six years and one day ago. I may discuss that - especially my specific issues with the educational system and the problems of standardization - a bit, later, but I have things to tend to right now. And I think the art says quite a bit in and of itself as far as explanation goes. |
by Adam the Alien on 6/5/2009 @ 2:51pm | Oop, almost forgot - Mark, "Unknown #2" is Ariel (hardly unknown) and Meg (a first timer). They collaborated. |
by Joel 413 on 6/5/2009 @ 3:04pm | Once again a nice representation of the work was posted on teh tread already, mine are in the flickr group.
But here is Ariel & Meg's final work. done in an hour, just not the noon-1 hour!
This week I'm going to VOTE for Adam, there's a lot there and it's personal as well as thematic. Big shoutout to Stowe and his super Mario Bros. |
by NineInchNachos on 6/5/2009 @ 3:12pm | I try to capture the candid moments during which the artist is interacting with his/her art piece. enjoy (happy friday).

by daydreamer on 6/5/2009 @ 4:13pm | Ok...I am voting for Thorax's "Brie and Pat" wedding bells....why? Because Brie is my daughter and Thorax, my son did it as a tribute to his baby sister and her groom to be. |
by mktacoma on 6/5/2009 @ 4:15pm | I started out wanting to vote for the Super Tacoma Bros (great work), but I'm going to vote for Adam in the end.
Tachonorable mentioned for Stowe? |
by kaotix on 6/5/2009 @ 4:28pm | Andrea has my vote. But kudos to the WASL pencil. |
by Dave_L on 6/5/2009 @ 5:02pm | Oh gawd, I just checked this thread....
I was going to go out in public this evening, but I've been RR'd! Or Bjornsoned. (Monlux, that should explain the answer I had to your question today!) tacomachickadee, check out this chalk someone that is good did: www.flickr.com/photos/brownish/349572280... Nice turnout today. I'm glad I was able to stop by for a few minutes on my way by. I will chalk no more forever, tho. Maybe, haha. |
by jamesstoweart on 6/5/2009 @ 5:25pm | Since mine hasn't made it up on the board yet here is a quick stitched together version using Kevin's pics:

by jenyum on 6/5/2009 @ 5:40pm | I vote for the taco truck.
Because I am hungry. And it's very realistic. |
by ElectricElliot on 6/5/2009 @ 5:54pm | Tough call this week. Will have to ponder. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 6/5/2009 @ 5:58pm | I did two this week!
The Brie and Pat wedding bells and the Teen Girl Squad. That being said, I'm obligated to vote for my Wedding bells one. It'll be the Wedding of the Century tomorrow... a spectacle beyond compare! ...ok, maybe not. But it does leave me, as the oldest child, the only one still not married. Anyway, here's the happy couple. Remember, a vote for the wedding bells is a vote for a happy marriage! ![]() |
by NineInchNachos on 6/5/2009 @ 6:01pm | Adam 2 took some good pics

by tacomachickadee on 6/5/2009 @ 6:29pm | I vote for AdamTheAlien. I'm glad he's still around. |
by Erik on 6/5/2009 @ 6:42pm | The Taco truck could revive Tollefson Plaza!
It was pretty good. |
by NineInchNachos on 6/5/2009 @ 6:58pm | when I worked for horizon at seatac I used to fantasize about killing myself by jumping into a throttling 777 jumbo jet engine. |

Did you ever do it? |
![]() by luan37 on 6/5/2009 @ 7:16pm | I vote for the pencil by Ben because he is my talented husband and I support him. |
by Twisty on 6/5/2009 @ 7:34pm | I'm voting for the taco truck, since there are so many just like it in my neighborhood. |
by Erik on 6/5/2009 @ 7:47pm | So many great entries.
I vote Taco Truck though. |
by NineInchNachos on 6/5/2009 @ 8:27pm | Not just any taco truck.
This is the one and only.... LOS 3 HERMANOS! 12TH and PINE best mexican in walking distance of the HFW Compound. |
by NineInchNachos on 6/5/2009 @ 8:37pm | Ms. Darcy wants me to vote for the fraggle rock entry.... but I must vote for Mark Monlux beaver because everyone could use more beaver in their lives. |
by NineInchNachos on 6/5/2009 @ 8:40pm | I am a big fan of NO. 2 pencils though. That would have been my NO. 2 choice |
by Dianne on 6/5/2009 @ 8:40pm | I vote for Jon. I am a fan of conjuring. |
by NineInchNachos on 6/5/2009 @ 9:25pm | I hope Chris Van Vechten uses some of these wasl pieces on his votevanvechten.com website |
by Mark Monlux on 6/5/2009 @ 9:53pm | RR, I went in and added Tacoma to my tags in Flickr per your suggestion. Thanks. I hope it feeds through. |
by ensie on 6/5/2009 @ 10:14pm | Adam! |
by ElectricElliot on 6/5/2009 @ 10:30pm | I vote for the WASL pencil. |
by DumpsterDivingDiva on 6/5/2009 @ 11:28pm | I vote for the Taco Bus. I'm starvin! : ) |
by meghansolo on 6/5/2009 @ 11:33pm | I vote Teen Girl Squad, for a couple of reasons...firstly, I saw them in more than one place, presumably by the same artist, which was cool (I love being surprised by random awesomeness), and also because it is so PERFECTLY Teen Girl Squad without any errors and with such clean minimalistic lines, which I think is sometimes a lot harder than being able to sketch and go over and over lines with new chalk. Plus, TGS is just so amazing! Some of my first illustrations were making my friends and myself into the copy-cat "Teen Nerd Squad." Good times.
Also, thanks for remembering me, guys, I had a TON of fun and it *definitely* won't be my last time. I also have some photos and video...I see everyone using flickr so I might make an account, so that I can share. :) And, also, if I could give a Miss Congeniality of Illustration Award, it would go to Ariel, for being in pain and false labor all day and still showing up to make sure that she helped introduce me to everyone. I less-than-three you, Mrs. Vining. |
by morgan on 6/6/2009 @ 12:00am | I love taco trucks. RR gets my vote! |
by Mark Monlux on 6/6/2009 @ 9:56am | Okay, here's my final tally:
RR...5 votes Adam...4 votes Brie & Pat...2 votes WASL pencil....2 votes Monlux...2 votes John...1 vote Teen Girl Squad...1 vote Andrea...1 vote Stowe...1 vote Feel free to double check my numbers. |
by Erik on 6/6/2009 @ 10:39am | Wow. Close contest.
If these numbers hold up, RR will have won each and every one of the Chris Van Vechten prizes including: 1) The political yard sign 2) Melon Mug 3) Melon T Shirt and 4) $15 value Lunch with CVV A preliminary congrats RR: ![]() |
by Erik on 6/6/2009 @ 10:40am | Chris comments on this week's chalk off on his site in reference to the chalk off and the WASL: THANK YOU FROST PARK CHALKERS www.votevanvechten.com/?p=304 |
by NineInchNachos on 6/6/2009 @ 7:57pm | I cannot believe this is happening to me. I win again. I am truly blessed to have such devoted fans. We frequent the taco truck on 12th and Pine whenever we get the hunger for authentic Mexican and we don't want to drive... driving is THE GREAT SATAN! Yes. Walking is the true path to nirvana.
Do residents have a moral obligation to walk as much as possible? YES! I would like to thank Joe Izenman for his help on the spelling of LOS 3 HERMANOS. I owe him a 99 cent taco. As soon as I repair the offroad stroller given to me by the Tacoma Urbanist we should all go out for Tacos. RR |
by morgan on 6/6/2009 @ 9:05pm | I have to say I am partial to the taco truck at South 38th & G(?) Street - but I'll have to try the one on 12th out. It's certainly much closer... even though I will still have to use "Satan's vehicle." |
by Adam the Alien on 6/7/2009 @ 1:10am | Damn, I wish I had remembered to vote when I had a computer available.
On a related note: I still think the vote-by-tweet idea is a good one. Either that, or Kevin needs to come up with a mobile-friendly feedtacoma. Even now that I have a new, Internet-capable phone, it's not good enough to load the thread before emitting a tortured scream, shifting into sobs of shame and agony, losing all its senses and eventually imploding and causing a tear in the space-time continuum. |
by NineInchNachos on 6/7/2009 @ 9:55am | try this adam!
m.feedtacoma.com/ |
by Joel 413 on 6/8/2009 @ 8:28am | It's Monday and I'm procrastinating from doing anything substantial at work. So, I concur on Mark's vote count. RR wins..
One exception to the count: Adam had three (3) official votes and one Shout out, which could have been interpreted as a vote. |
by NineInchNachos on 6/8/2009 @ 12:37pm | thanks joel, with your concurrence it's like i've won all over again.
verily, Frost Park Chalk Challenge is the gift that keeps on giving |
