Chalk Showdown For COT *Tagro* at Frost Park Today

Frost Park Chalking Today

Tacoma Tagro For Winner

Free Frisbees For All Chalkers

Episode XXVI: Week 26

Today is Frost Park Friday at Noon in downtown Tacoma at 9th and Pacific Avenue.
Everyone is invited.

This week, RR Anderson delivers an environmentally Tagro centered message to the artistic masses:

Is TAGRO Right for You?

Do soiled areas of your property have that 'not so fresh' feeling?  Are you suffering from chronic bowel pain? Excessive sleep terrors?

Embarrassing oily discharge(s)? You may be one of many American artists who like me struggles daily with the guilt of heavily contaminated soil or 100 years of ASARCO's unfortunate byproduct of industrial progress.

Change is coming friends.

Ask your doctor if TAGRO
is right for you (void where prohibited by law. Safe when used as directed).

Friday, 12 Noon - 1PM
Larry Frost Memorial Park
9th & Commerce

Corporate Sponsorship:

Chalk Challenge No. 26
is made possible through charitable donation BY THE CITY OF TACOMA of upto 3 CUBIC YARDS OF TAGRO GIFT COUPON or as one could imagine, a MADE IN TACOMA HILLARIOUS PRANK OPPORTUNITY when combined with the loose confirmation requirements needed for DUMPTRUCK DELIVERY SUPRISE! just kidding.  Who would do that?

Check Out Adam the Alien's New Frost Park Video:

Great video.  Joel and Adam give artistic commentary.

Andrea gives a cogent summary of her winning art submission where she concedes she indeed intentionally designated RR as the "Judas" in her chalk submission.   Tricky.

This week's chalking advertisement art by RR:

by KevinFreitas on 10/3/2008 @ 6:51am
Hahaha, awesome poster. I really think they should hire RR for a set of cheeky Tagro ads. Could really be fun.

Don't let the rain scare you, hearty Pacific Northwest souls. Dawn your best umbrella, shield the cement canvas from wetness for your honorable chalkers and come on down!

Watch the radar to know whether the weather will warrant some cover:

by dawntown on 10/3/2008 @ 9:30am
Holy Sh*t, it's my favorite Tacoma mascot, Tagroy the dirt muffin!

Looks like we're needing to arm ourselves against the big green blob monsters. All hell breaks loose if the magenta ones make it our way (see map above)

by ElectricElliot on 10/3/2008 @ 9:44am
Sigh, can't make it today. Out of town.

by izenmania on 10/3/2008 @ 10:12am
Tagline for this week's chalk-off:

"TAGRO: Our Crappiest Sponsor Yet!"

(no, the poop jokes will never get old.)

by jamesstoweart on 10/3/2008 @ 11:14am
I'll be there, I'd feel Sh!tty if I didn't!

I'll be here all week. Tip your waitresses.

Seriously though folks, TAGRO...

I'll have handouts this week... about a subject both close to my heart and extremely egotistical of me. i can't wait to share it.

by Dave_L on 10/3/2008 @ 11:22am
I’ve missed several weeks of Chalk-Offs, but as soon as I drop-off a few friends at the lake I think I will come and spectate.

by tacomachickadee on 10/3/2008 @ 11:25am
I sense competition for vertical space today ...

by Erik on 10/3/2008 @ 11:36am
I sense competition for vertical space today ...

Yep. Most of the vertical spaces are impervious to rain. Spectators can help out by holding an umbrella.

by tacomachickadee on 10/3/2008 @ 12:09pm
I see dawn, Stowe, lance, mark, kevin, Todd, andrea ...

by Adam the Alien on 10/3/2008 @ 12:31pm
I overslept. :(

Worst reason for missing the chalk-off EVER.

Almost made it for at least the last bit, but the stupid bus decided to come early and I missed it.

by Lance Kagey on 10/3/2008 @ 1:16pm
So, a little explanation. Have you read Eric Jacobsen’s article in the Trib this last week?

It was so funny I had to make reference. He talks about the lack of Tacoma themed chotchies at our local airport. So here’s my vote for more Tac at SeaTac.

Oh and by the way, I vote for Lance. You could vote for me too. No pressure. But I could really use the truckload of *!@#it. My garden is asking you to please vote.

by tacomachickadee on 10/3/2008 @ 1:25pm
... and izenmania, person with izenman who I don't recall his name, dave l., gretchen of herban cafe, heather of the farmers market, the arts folks come to hand out umbrellas (and adam -- I have your bus pass) ... much fun!

by tacomachickadee on 10/3/2008 @ 1:45pm
Kudos to Andrea, Mark, Stowe, Dawn and Lance for working with the rain and making some chalktastic art! I'll post photos tonight ... as I'm sure Kevin will as well ...

by KevinFreitas on 10/3/2008 @ 1:57pm
Here's pics from today for all you rain averse. ;)

by Mark Monlux

by Stowe

by Dawn

by Andrea

by Lance

More pics from the chalk off here as well. Now to determine who gets my vote...

by KevinFreitas on 10/3/2008 @ 1:59pm
Haha, thanks for the live iPhone based blogging chickadee. That's awesome.

Alright people, get to voting -- it's the least you could do since the rain scared you away (or lulled you into deep sleep as it may have with Adam)!

by MarkMonlux on 10/3/2008 @ 2:00pm
There I was, like, "Dude, where's Eric with my Fedora? It's a rainin' and I need it." Luckily I'd brought my gardening hat that I inherited from my Uncle Glen. And even more luck, a brand new hat from Tagro! I would have grabbed a Frisbee, but throwing them at the cat just irritates her. Kudo's to Lance for his innovative use of two point perspective art. There was many a grumbling curse from other chalkers wishing they had thought if it first. But, who to vote for? I've got a garden too. And with the way the economy is tanking I might be planting more veggies next spring. So, a vote for me is a vote for veggies.

Water is Life.

by Erik on 10/3/2008 @ 2:01pm
Looks like some good submissions.

by Dave_L on 10/3/2008 @ 2:02pm
That was cool, I’ve never been offered an umbrella, and I didn’t know what to say. And I got a Tagro™ Hat and a Tagro™ Frisbee™ - THANK YOU!
Way-cool innovation by Lance, and Monlux’s river was mesmerizing in that it looked better as the colors ran more in the slight drizzle. Plus, the angle he drew it in matched exactly the direction of runoff when it rains or when the sprinklers come on. In fact, as much as I like Lance’s innovation on SeaTac, and admire how he didn’t let the dead bird at his feet faze him, my VOTE just barely goes to Monlux.

by Elizabeth on 10/3/2008 @ 2:30pm
Erik... I think Mark wants his hat.. I missed today, too...working...leavin' early... good on y'all.
BTW... I vote for ANDREA (how did she get that bird to stay dry??? I'm thinking MAGIC!).... though water is good, too...

by jamesstoweart on 10/3/2008 @ 2:31pm

Since by legion of mindless zombies failed to secure me a win last week...

And considering this month's City Arts has labeled me as a resent zombie expert...

I have decided to start S.T.O.W.E.Z.

Steadfast Tacomans Obsessed With the Elimination of Zombies

A vote for Stowe is a vote securing a zombie free future for you and your children.

A mind is a terrible thing to be wretched out of your skull by boney claws and cracked teeth.

by dawntown on 10/3/2008 @ 2:44pm
Well, here's my vote:

The best part of waking up is TAGRO in your cup!

The Aroma of Tacoma blend of course!

by tacomachickadee on 10/3/2008 @ 3:12pm
There was a dead bird!?!?!?! Is there ALWAYS a dead bird on top of the fountain, or was this the one from the beginning of summer? Ew! Brave Lance ...

by izenmania on 10/3/2008 @ 3:20pm
person with izenman who I don't recall his name

That would be Nick of TacomaGeekery

by Lance Kagey on 10/3/2008 @ 3:33pm
It was more difficult than it might appear to create this weeks chalk. So what it doesn't make up in artistry it hopefully makes up for in cleverness.

vote for Lance

by izenmania on 10/3/2008 @ 3:52pm
Tacoma's first lenticular chalking!

It's not really clear from the pictures, but Lance's uses the ridges of the garage such that the same space says Tac from one angle and Sea from the other. Tricksy!

by scout on 10/3/2008 @ 3:58pm
If it rhymes it's true. I vote DAWN, DAWN DAWNNNNN. Very cool colors and that coffee woman is interesting and kind of retro something...... '40s?

by Erik on 10/3/2008 @ 5:48pm
Dawn's piece is good and fun. Reminds me of Mad Magazine.

I vote dawntown.

(I wonder what she will put in the Winthrop Window next month if she wins today's contest?)

by jcbetty on 10/3/2008 @ 6:08pm
torn between the STOWEZ because it's become a subject near and dear to my heart, and the dawntown, because I have to love a reference to Folgers being the crap I feel it is, and the monlux, because I always am a fan. And then, there's the andrea, with her fully lovable reference to hitchcock and MoG, and then of course there's the Lance, with the more Tac in SeaTac, which is a subject near to my heart, too.

forkety, fork. Wish I was there to see 'em in person, I had plans to go but I got sucked into my vortex of self-ness.

so...ummmm... hmmmmm.........

by jcbetty on 10/3/2008 @ 6:15pm
oh, wait, just realized there's also an awesomely fabulous reference to that one building at UWT in Lance's work, whose name I used to know, which alludes to the seattle tacoma relationship of my alma mater. Oh, hell, I'm a sucker for symbolism. If only dawntown smiled and winked with a faux-'Sotan accent in her coffee girl piece... or if the zombie had the look of 'Cain...

by Girl Who <3 JUNK on 10/3/2008 @ 6:23pm
Let me seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I'm a bit jet-lagged (sp?) right now.
I just got back from England/Wales Wednesday night.

I would like to vote for Dawn.

Because I can't stop humming the folgers commercial!

He! He!

"I love TAGRO"

Our yard is full of it.

by scout on 10/3/2008 @ 6:24pm
jcbetty you are such a tease!

by herban on 10/3/2008 @ 6:32pm
dawn, stowe, tie

by KevinFreitas on 10/3/2008 @ 6:42pm
The wait is over. I give you... an animated GIF of Lance's piece in action:

Though thoroughly impressed by this along with the tenacity of chalkers Dawn, Andrea, and Stowe (not to mention their great work) I gotta vote Mark. His use of the flowing water over sidewalk was really great and I love the "Water is Life" message. Because around here, it truly is.

by KevinFreitas on 10/3/2008 @ 6:45pm
@jcbetty: Isn't that the West Coast Grocery building you're talking about?

by Courtney on 10/3/2008 @ 7:39pm
I vote for Dawn with apologies to my husband. His was neat but Dawn's made me laugh. I also loved Lance's and Marks's. It was a tossup between Dawn and Mark for me.

by Erik on 10/3/2008 @ 7:46pm
The wait is over. I give you... an animated GIF of Lance's piece in action:

That is nice.

by NineInchNachos on 10/3/2008 @ 7:59pm
sorry I missed the wet chalk action! Here are my pics. Will return with my vote and analysis later. You guys make a fella proud.

Lance's Tagro Beans

Andrea's Plague Doctor Glass Bird

Stowe Chalk Insignia

Mark Monlux, Interactive Rain Chalk

by NineInchNachos on 10/3/2008 @ 8:06pm
my god. Lance is a chalk innovator god! nice gif!!!!

by MarkMonlux on 10/3/2008 @ 8:32pm
A vote for mark is a vote for veggies.
I'd also like to point out that mine is the only one actually on the sidewalk. But, I know that we are a no-holds bar type of group. I want to vote for Lance, but my wife is really excited about getting some Tagro.

So, I blatantly vote for myself.

by TacomaGnome on 10/3/2008 @ 9:28pm
Being a consumer of vegatables, and knowing that Tagro is an excellent part of growing veggies ... I happen to want to choose the work by mister Stowe, I don't know why, but it is just appealing to me.

by NineInchNachos on 10/3/2008 @ 9:31pm
I ran into Marty at Stadium Video and we ended up talking about the amazing parking-garage chalk innovation today at frost park. You've opened up a whole other dimension to the chalking possibilities.

Mark.. your chalk art designed to interact with the environment is very cool. I can see the humpies (or pink salmon) swimming up river to spawn. I like it.

Stowe continues to terrify with the zombies. Zombies give us the creeps so just going to whistle past the graveyard onto the next piece.

Andrea... another beautiful glass piece. Those particular birds remind me of plague doctor masks, which i'm both drawn to in a surrealistic costume sense and creeped out by in a human-coming-to-terms-with-own-mortality sense.

I vote for DAWN! I think its the best thing she's drawn so far. Great colors. Great typography. A Class A Biosolid beverage is amusing to visualize as well. Trifecta!

Special thanks to Alicia. Awesome Tagro merch!

Tagro is really a great product. My Tomatos, walla walla onions, beets, loved it. Next year i'm going to get more Tagro!

by AngelaJossy on 10/3/2008 @ 9:32pm
Kudos to the chalk warriors - good efforts by all! In the rain no less. I'm impressed. How much longer will you guys keep this up? Will you be scraping snow off the sidewalk from 11 am to noon and chalking from noon until your fingers freeze off?

As for my vote, since they are all really good it really comes down to choosing between water, airport, bird, coffee or zombie killer. I'm gonna have to go with bird I think. There's something vibrant and free about birds and Andrea's rendering was unique and colorful - just the ticket on a grey and drizzly afternoon.

by tacomachickadee on 10/3/2008 @ 9:38pm
All did fabulous work ... but I gotta give cred to Mark for working WITH the rain rather than hiding from it ... and to Lance for yet again finding a way to blow up the box. But now I must choose ... the zombies are so gonna get me no matter what ...

by anubismp on 10/3/2008 @ 9:45pm
Although zombie elimination is a worthy task and goal I have to vote for Lances SEA TAC for the win. Though I wasn't there the description of the creativeness of his idea was just mind boggling.

by jcbetty on 10/3/2008 @ 9:48pm
gotta go Lance. Number one reason: animated action, courtesy de kayfray. Number two reason: those things I mentioned above. Number three: this little ditty sprang to mind as I tried to decide:
"eeny meenie miney moes,
someone really got wet toes,
and, well, just cuz, just cuz I knows,
that someone really wants Ta-grows

by ALT on 10/3/2008 @ 10:11pm
Despite the rain, some really great entries yet again! I'm loving Stowe's anti-zombie task force emblem, and Mark's water lovin' fishies are a great tribute to Tacoma weather.

However, I must vote for the ever innovative and tenacious Art Ninja Mr. Lance Kagey. Simple and at the same time complex, his entry takes the dynamism of art to a new level.

Kudos also to Kevin for creating that great gif! It really does justice to Lance's entry and effectively shares it with all who couldn't make it down today.

by MarkMonlux on 10/3/2008 @ 10:31pm
What a race! What conflict! What a time to haul out nepotism and change my vote to my long time friend (and giver of fine vegetables next spring) Lance. He really does deserve it for thinking outside the box (and fountain).

Go, Lance, Go!

by tacomachickadee on 10/3/2008 @ 10:38pm
Argh. This is hard. Eeny meenie minie moe ... I vote Lance, with a huge shout out to Mark and kudos to today's rainy day artists as a whole! Nice work!!!!!

by jamesstoweart on 10/3/2008 @ 11:05pm
Apparently people are not taking the impending zombie apocalypse seriously.

Would a S.T.O.W.E.Z. button bribe per vote help? yes? no?

Hmmm...It would appear that I don't need to win this week...because I am already completely full of @$%.

I love a good crap joke.

Which is why I am voting Dawny Dawn this week.

Mad props to Mark and Lance though. Every time I see them from across the chalk battlefield I know my chances at victory drop considerably.

But Dawn drew a lady drinking poopy. That is easily worth 3 cubic yards of processed human waste.

by Adam the Alien on 10/3/2008 @ 11:12pm
What a time to haul out nepotism and change my vote

See, Mark, this is why I take all day to think about my vote each week, so I won't have to cause confusion by changing my vote as you just did.

'Course, that also means I frequently forget to vote until it's past midnight...

In any case, my thought process:

Andrea and Dawn produced some gorgeous - and very Tacoma-relevant - pieces.

Andrea managed to pull off a chalking that actually looks so much like glass that I have to stare at it for a few minutes before my brain finally registers "chalk" instead of "HOW IS THE GLASS INSIDE THE CEMENT?"

Dawn simultaneously made me laugh my ass off and got the Folger's classic advertising jingle stuck in my head. That's a point for her, making a reference I actually know and making me laugh...and a point against, because the song is still stuck in my head.

However, my top three choices were Stowe, Mark and Lance.

Stowe came out swinging with the most use of black...my vote often hinges on a use of black. In fact, some of my past votes have been decided purely by the amount of black laid down. I loves me some black. Also, the zombie meta-reference was amusing.

But Stowe - who has, in the past, been the master of new and innovative chalk projects - fell short compared to Mark and Lance.

Not only was Mark the only one ballsy enough to chalk horizontally in this week's rain, he was the only one whose art works with the rain. Even if it weren't constructed so, the mere celebration of water is something I have to give kudos for - I'm a big fan of water. I feel most comfortable in locations near large bodies of water (the coast is my personal Heaven), and I'm the only person I know who has managed to over-hydrate...to the point that I was forced to lick salt out of an ex-girlfriend's mother's hand to keep my body from continuing to shut down. So, yeah, I really love water. Add in the fish swimming upstream - something I recall being a facet in some of my favorite moments in education since, well, always - and I'd thought I found my winner.

But then there was Lance. I was already leaning toward him on sheer scale and daring to go where no chalk artist has gone before. Then I found out how much more innovative it was than I had realized. So while I curse at you, Lance, for doing that on a day that I wasn't there to properly capture it with my video camera (and had I realized sooner the full extent of the piece, I would have taken the next bus down to capture it immediately)...I am in awe. Lance, you took a space I've always felt needed some art on it, a surface we've all been too chicken to play with, and worked with it to create something that nobody else thought of. You, sir, are the Lord of the Chalk. Which, I assure you, is better than Lord of the Dance, less dangerous than Lord of the Rings and absolutely nothing like Lord of the Flies.

My vote goes to Lance.

by pietogo on 10/3/2008 @ 11:12pm
My vote totally goes for Lance "Michael Flatley" Kagey...i have to say how impressed I am with the other works though...especially the water flowing freely down the walkway! By next Friday, there'll be a pile of fish at the bottom of the sidewalk :) I love the vibrant colors used in this weeks chalk-off too...the level of chalk-work expertise amazes me! The simple Seatac is so innovative-I love it! The article that goes along with it is pretty awesome (and points out an interesting observation--we need some T-Town shirts at the airport!).

by Lance Kagey on 10/4/2008 @ 7:04am
It's tough, in my opinion, because my piece doesn't show much artistry. The talent of Mark and James and Andrea and Dawn out shine my creation in every way. But it was fun to do. thanks for all the votes.

by Erik on 10/4/2008 @ 3:19pm
A tie between Lance and Dawn?

Anyone else want to interpret the votes and put them on an excel spreadsheet?

by scout on 10/4/2008 @ 4:46pm
My cat wants to add a vote for Dawn

by dawntown on 10/4/2008 @ 7:30pm
What a load of crap, I won (thank you Gummo Bear)

I won a load of crap :)

Peace out folks. If it is interpreted that I won, I will probably donate the TAGRO to the community gardens around town, since I don't have a lawn of my own.

BTW, that was a way cool gif, Kev. And, Lance's entry was truly innovative and risky. It will be fun to see how that medium develops.

Thank you, Frost Park Fanatics!

by tacomachickadee on 10/4/2008 @ 10:50pm
My count (someone double-check ...)

Lance: 8
Dawn: 7.5
Stowe: 2.5
Mark: 2
Andrea: 2

by Erik on 10/4/2008 @ 11:54pm
Far be it from me to question tacomachickadee.

Lance wins 3 cubic yards of TAGRO!

by scout on 10/5/2008 @ 1:00am
Gummo wants a recount - he says there were hanging chads....

by tacomachickadee on 10/5/2008 @ 10:37am
Someone please double-check my counting anyhow ...

by dawntown on 10/6/2008 @ 9:56am
Hah, Gummo is right! There was a 1/2 vote chad hanging in the machine. Here are my counts (minus Gummos, sorry)

Dawn- 7.5
Lance- 7
Mark- 2 (changed his earlier vote for himself to Lance)
Stowe- 2.5
Andrea- 1

If this is true, due to the pure innovativeness of Lance's peice, I will happily transfer my prized pile of shit to him, as I think he has the yard to dump it in. But the episode win goes to me, FTR.

by Erik on 10/6/2008 @ 11:26am

So far we have one vote count for Lance and one vote count for Dawn. Even the recount is tied!

Anyone else want to try to count the votes and break the tie?

There a slew of City of Tacoma Tagro at stake here as well as chalk off valor.

by tacomachickadee on 10/6/2008 @ 12:32pm
OK, I still come up with Lance as the winner by .5 ... but I'm naming the votes this time. That way we can figure out where any confusion might be. There's GOT to be a better way to count! It's painful when it's close! :)

Lance votes: 8
Lance Kagey, anubismp, jcbetty, UnstableArt, MarkMonlux, TacomaChickadee, AdamTheAlien, pietogo

Dawn votes: 7.5
dawntown, Scout, Erik, one store, herban (.5 vote), Courtney, NineInchNachos, jamesstoweart

Andrea votes: 2
Elizabeth, AngelaJossy

Mark votes: 2
Dave L., Kevin Freitas

Stowe votes: 1.5 (did I imagine an izenmania vote for stowe earlier? wow ... this is why more than one person should count ...)
TacomaGnome, herban (.5 vote)

by Erik on 10/6/2008 @ 12:50pm
OK, I still come up with Lance as the winner by .5 ... but I'm naming the votes this time.

Thanks tacomachickadee. That clarifies your counting.

Is your vote count different Dawn? If so, how?

by AngelaJossy on 10/6/2008 @ 1:13pm
What's with the .5's? Are some votes more equal than others?

by joel413 on 10/6/2008 @ 1:21pm
OK, without making guesses as to how people are voting and counting based on people who actually used the word VOTE in their response I come up with the following results:

Lance (7)
Official Votes: Lance, anubis, Andrea, Mark, Chickadee, AdamtheAlien, pietogo
Unofficial votes: jcbetty (didn't use the word vote..."gotta go lance")

Dawn (7)
OV: Dawn, Scout, Erik, One Store, Courtney, RxR, Stowe
UV: herban (not "vote" ... "dawn, stowe, tie") Gummo (Late vote)

Mark (2)
OV: Dave_L, K to the F

Andrea (2)
OV: elizabeth, AngelaJossy

Stowe (1)
OV: TacomaGnome
UV: herban, (see above)

It's not Excel, but it's as close as we're going to get. I can save the Post-It!(r) for submission to the Secretary of Chalk. If you use the UV's you get Alicia's count.

by joel413 on 10/6/2008 @ 1:26pm
My suggestion? A load of crap for Lance and a nice bag of potting soil for dawn.

by tacomachickadee on 10/6/2008 @ 1:38pm
I thought "vote" just makes it easier to search ... never thought it was a rule, as long as it was clear who the person was specifying. Ack.

Isn't the only rule "no glitter"? -- he he he *nudge Stowe*

Other than that, the only voting rule I've ever known of is "must vote by midnight".

by joel413 on 10/6/2008 @ 2:09pm
Well, there's dangling chads all over the place... I counted by "vote" to see if it added clarity, but it didn't... If you count by intent our results are the same.

by dawntown on 10/6/2008 @ 2:35pm
that is how I came up with my totals; searched for the word vote and the name that followed. Well, let's just call it as it is...CRAP SHOOT TIE! Either way, Lance, the shite is all yours :)

We will share the episode victory, though. But I would hate to discount my 1/2 point from Mrs. One Store's vote, a highly valuable member of this community ;0

kidding. See yalls later!

by dawntown on 10/6/2008 @ 2:39pm
Ah, I see the prob. Lance didn't cast a "vote". I have no problem with shameless self-promotion ;)

by scout on 10/6/2008 @ 3:06pm
Gummo says "better to have dangling chads than dangling 'nads"......

I apologize - sometimes he is a very rude animal.

by Erik on 10/6/2008 @ 3:35pm
I knew one day there might be the disputed vote episode.

Voting rule:

Please use the word "vote" for easy reference to the chalk submission that you believe is the best.

I thought "vote" just makes it easier to search ... never thought it was a rule, as long as it was clear who the person was specifying. Ack.

Yeah, its a voting preference not a mandate.

I think he did (see above):

From what I see, Lance won.

Like Solomon I propose we divide the Tagro in two equal halves. 3 cubic yards is more than any one person can handle.

Also like solomon, whoever surrenders the tagro out of horror at the prospect of 3 cubic yards divided. .. well then you know who the real winner is.
