Episode XVIII: Week 18
Chalking Victor To Receive Winthrop Hotel Window Fame
RR Anderson's Message to Tacomans. RR appears to be trying to articulate a message using "hip hop" or "rap":
Somebody said all the worlds is stage, And each of us is a player. That's what I've been tryin to tell you.
In ACT ONE I was struggling to survive. Nobody wanted my action dead or alive.
ACT TWO, I hit the big time. And bodies be all up on my behind. And I can't help myself because I was born to shine.
And if you don't like it, you can shove it. But you don't like it, you love it. So I'll be up here in a rage, 'Til they bring the curtain down on the stage.
I am the greatest [chalk artist] that ever lived. I was born to give. ....

How many friends does Frost Park have?
Tacoma seems to have a great many myspace users. A regular Frost Park attendee (not me) has started a myspace page for Frost Park Chalk Offs here:
http://www.myspace.com/frostpark
It has a number of the videos on it already and 5 "friends."

by Adam the Alien on 8/8/2008 @ 2:43am | In addition to the Frost Park Myspace page, I've started a Frost Park Fanatics group for those who favor Facebook and want to make a digital connection:
www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid... If the link doesn't work for you, just search for "Frost Park Fanatics". The page is sparse, but anyone who joins should be able to add their own photos, links and other such content. |
by jamesstoweart on 8/8/2008 @ 7:06am | I have no pregame report today because I have no (pre)game.
I'm headed up to Seattle this morning for an Adobe seminar which should run all day. This will be the first Chalk-Off I've missed since I jump into the fray 4 months ago. Good luck everyone! (Mark Monlux and this week's winner card next week... which will make 18... which is two whole full sheets of cards. Crazy.) |
by Mofo from the Hood on 8/8/2008 @ 7:14am | YO! YO! YO!
This is the ReaL Mofo from the Hood Wily, Super Styley No. 1 Psuedointellectual just for fun The Chalk Challenge poster and all is fine But I didn't say nut'n about a stage, or after that wisecracker line. |
by Elle on 8/8/2008 @ 8:50am | I'm also out today (again). Having a party at my house on Saturday and the toilets need a cleaning. But I will make it to Showcase tomorrow. |
by NineInchNachos on 8/8/2008 @ 8:56am | RR Anderson will be there with Max and Ms. Darcy.
RR Anderson will create a tribute to "Frank Zappa in Tacoma" in honor of Frank Zappa Day... which is tomorrow. |
by KevinFreitas on 8/8/2008 @ 8:59am | I will be there to record my first time lapse. RR: would you mind being the subject of this one? |
by NineInchNachos on 8/8/2008 @ 9:07am | For Real.
also now I'm not naming names. .. but If my Lonergan yard sign were to appear in Frost Park, I will take it back home. No questions asked. |
by Dave_L on 8/8/2008 @ 9:22am | I ran into Teddy yesterday (my standard opening line) and he said he will drop by today and MAYBE chalk. (Please prod him to.) Teddy has been working very hard formulating the event “WORLD CHALK†to expand this event around the globe. (I’m serious, because he’s serious.) I’ll let him fill you all in on the details that are materializing in his head and on his note-pad.. A meet-up is in order to brainstorm together on this. See y’all there today. |
by NineInchNachos on 8/8/2008 @ 9:46am | hey if somebody sees Izenmania. tell him i've got his wapato lake cartoon all ready to go if he's got the cash. :) |
by dawntown on 8/8/2008 @ 10:10am | if you run into Izenman, tell him I got his beard...
Yo, yo Kev, hook it up!! Suweeeet! Nacho, I got a pic for you. No charge, just pretend you like it, yo, yo. |
by izenmania on 8/8/2008 @ 10:45am | hey if somebody sees Izenmania.
I'll let him know if I run into him. I'm sure he's around here somewhere... |
by izenmania on 8/8/2008 @ 11:22am | Also, RR gets my pre-vote because of my great Zappa-love. |
by Erik on 8/8/2008 @ 11:28am | In addition to the Frost Park Myspace page, I've started a Frost Park Fanatics group for those who favor Facebook and want to make a digital connection: Thanks Adam! I will be there to record my first time lapse Nice. Frost Park is becoming the experimental artistic cauldron of the city. Looks like the Weekly Volcano channel is picking up this weeks Frost Park Chalk Off Episode as well: It’s Friday and that means only one thing: Frost Park Chalk Challenge. Head down to Ninth and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma to chalk up the cement, eat your lunch or just hang. weeklyvolcano.typepad.com/spew/2008/08/f... I am going to have to read that Weekly Volcano more often! |
by jenyum on 8/8/2008 @ 11:37am | I have deadlines today, but see you all next week I hope.
|
by Erik on 8/8/2008 @ 11:58am | Ok. First Frost Park Chalking photos should be available online here at around 12:15 p.m.:

by tacomachickadee on 8/8/2008 @ 1:25pm | Lovely turnout today! And lovely stuff -- the colors, the content, the passersby, the variety ... what a way to end a week.
Quick feelin'-sappy commentary: My entry this week is dedicated to the spirit of the Frost Park community, as well as to my Grandma Doris, whose home and heart were like an accordian ... ever-expanding. |
by Mandiferous on 8/8/2008 @ 1:25pm | I get the first vote! Mwa ha ha!
I vote for the JC Betty, Steph, Dawntown collaboration: Cannon-o-Love. Beautiful colors. |
by tacomachickadee on 8/8/2008 @ 1:26pm | And speaking of ever-expanding ... the Frost Park spirits have been invited to haunt the street on the south side of Tollefson Plaza tomorrow as part of the Showcase Tacoma slew of activities (starting at 11 a.m. and going all day). It would be grand to have mass turnout at least from 11-1 so we can cover the street in art for all to enjoy ... and it's the perfect opportunity to chalk to the beat of Deborah Page's fab tunes as well.
So for those wanting to continue the Frost Park rush another day ... stop on by. And for those who are normally working or otherwise "busy" ... stop on by! Chalk will be provided. |
by Erik on 8/8/2008 @ 1:44pm | There were a ton of chalkers out there. At least two teams were from New York (Welcome to Tacoma!). Thanks for bring them to Frost Park Laura. by izenmania on 8/8/2008 @ 1:46pm | I will simply formalize my pre-vote for RR's Tacomization of the classic Zappa-on-toilet image.
RxR's choice of hyphenation makes me fear that Mr. Zappa may have visited a less-than-stellar taqueria, prompting is (ab)use of the Dome. |
by Erik on 8/8/2008 @ 1:53pm | The unknown New York artist has some great detail work:
![]() |
by Altered Chords on 8/8/2008 @ 1:54pm | I vote for Dawn and Jessica.
The colors were astounding. I did not think it was possible to attain that level of vibrancy from chalk. Please note: this was a very difficult decision. I did like spider man climbing up the wall and Andrea's spider-like method of drawing. RR's Zappa not only brought back memories, I think it brought back a flashback or 2. |

by droid116 on 8/8/2008 @ 2:25pm | Great stuff. Great colors. Many worthy entries this week. Alicia, really liked the accordion, the mystery New York people were very nice and I liked all of their work both solo and with Laura.
Though my entry of the construction cranes was my third, it was the first I am actually pretty proud of. The cats and dog chasing was great, I am a big Spidey fan, and is there no END to what that Garfield can do. Everyone's was great. I think RR is genius: a naked Zappa upon the porcelain TDome throne. It is just disturbing. The colors on Dawn and Jessica's was vibrant and I liked the theme. I would not be surprised to see them win this week. However, I am going for the more classic Coffee Pot illustration by Dave L. this week. There is something about it I simply like. It gets my vote. |
by Mark Monlux on 8/8/2008 @ 2:44pm | I'm new to posting photos on Flickr, but here were some shots I took today. Did anyone else see the drop of sunshine by the fountain?

by NineInchNachos on 8/8/2008 @ 2:45pm | looks like kevin has got us pretty well covered for pics... here are my wide-angle candid offerings:
very clever Professor Fry! - Ms. Darcy
Zappa Crappa Dome (tomorrow is Frank Zappa Day!) |
by NineInchNachos on 8/8/2008 @ 2:49pm | "a garlic aroma that could level tacoma" song lyric from frank zappa. ![]() |
by NineInchNachos on 8/8/2008 @ 3:01pm | The Dave L coffee pot java jive was delightful. One of my favorites really. Ms Darcy was charmed by the dome cranes. Laura Hanan gave Picasso a run for his money. Andrea's portrait of Mofo From the Hood was inspiring. Jeremy's defiant use of a copyrighted rubber-stamp character makes me happy in tomany ways to count.
however I gotta go with the izenmania swing vote.. I vote for zappa! |
by thriceallamerican on 8/8/2008 @ 3:08pm | I vote cats (and wolfdog). Because, well, cats.
(I suppose you could argue that same reasoning would bring my vote to Garfield, because he is in theory a cat, though not particularly cat-like in my opinion–maybe Jeremy should start drawing Bucky instead–and I was tempted, but I'm a little bit more partial to the Minus Garfield vein of things...Jim Davis has been slumming it since approximately 1978 when he created said marketing juggernaut.) |
by jcbetty on 8/8/2008 @ 3:14pm | well, the Zappa crappa was very cool, well rendered. Nice use of dome-as-toto. Also nice to see RR sans beret and looking all doting daddy-like (and lovely to see Darcy and the wee gorgeous squidge!!) Dave L is good-- don't let his modest demeanor fool ya'. And holy crap, ALicia-- who knew you had that latent artistic talent bubbling within you, waiting to come out??!!! Naturally, Andrea and Monlux were rock solid--I particularly liked Monlux' addition of chalk-blood to the tire, though I suspect Andrea's perspective rendering might just have utilized more art-y techniques... The New York newbies and their host (ess) were impressive, and as always Adam the Alien, and Jeremy didn't disappoint. In light of my current origami-lovin', and impressive display of artistic ability (dude, *drawing* origami cranes? Is there no end to your talent?), I would have given Fry my vote in a split second IF I had not toiled, shed boob sweat, and exposed more crack than should be legal alongside Dawntown and Steph (note the PH!!!!) deR --not only was I a filthy, sweaty mess, but I was proud as hell of our little group contribution. And, Tacoma Art Supply, Warren: your chalk rocks!!! So, yeah, I vote TEAM DAWNTOWN!!! Woot!!! |
by dawntown on 8/8/2008 @ 3:44pm | I vote DAWNTOWN, too!
Although, there is couple of other's I proly would have voted for, but with a team like today, there's no question... |
by pncarter on 8/8/2008 @ 3:46pm | Week after week I'm amazed by all the talent! This week my favorites included Spiderman, The Coffee Pot and the cats and dog. However, because I can only vote for one, and because I am an origami lover myself, I'm going to have to cast my vote for the cranes. Well done AF. |
by KevinFreitas on 8/8/2008 @ 3:47pm | Nuts, this is not an easy choice. I'm a huge fan of bright color so team Dawntown nearly captured my vote. But, I gotta go for the sleeper Dave L and his Java Jive. To me, this looks like timeless folk art and it's just lovely.
Cheers to everyone and special kudos to Jeremy for his work this week. I think it's his best yet! |
by AngelaJossy on 8/8/2008 @ 3:56pm | That rainbow love cannon was the GREATEST! I vote team Dawntown. |
by Dave_L on 8/8/2008 @ 4:15pm | Thank you, Droid, Kevin, RR/Darcy – I am honored and flattered. I had been wanting to do the Jive for weeks, but hadn't come up with a good twist. Joe and other had some good suggestion today, though, so I might have to try it again someday. I’m running late and don’t have the time to study all the photos – I had only enough time to log on and look for a few seconds… and I know I will have a difficult time choosing. Truthfully, he construction cranes struck a chord with me, so I’ll go with my gut-reaction and heart, before the brain and eyes start arguing, and place my vote for the cranes. Though many, many really knock me out as well. I don’t have time to set-up my kids with avatars right now, so these votes probably aren’t official. But for what it’s worth, when I asked my kids which they would vote for, my 7-yr old daughter voted for Garfield, and by 4-yr old son voted for Monlux’s cats. What a day of beautiful ideas and color. |
by jcbetty on 8/8/2008 @ 4:16pm | crap this is a nailbiter. I have to pull out a stop, here... |
by DumpsterDivingDiva on 8/8/2008 @ 4:31pm | WOW!
What a great day it was at Frost Park. I had a lovely lunch and watched all the great artist at work. I can't believe they do it all in ONE hour. All you chalkers are THE BOMB! It's a hard one this time around. My vote is for Dawntown. The COLORS were very vibrant. Nice job to ALL! |
by scout on 8/8/2008 @ 4:34pm | This week's stuff was so cool and the NYC crew brought some great energy from the East Coast - The Goodmans are a talented family of artists - best of all now we're national! RR's Zappa and Andrea's Spidey were exceptional. The color in Dawn, Jessica, and Steph's piece was incredible. Bella's tiny tiger was wonderful, as was the drop of sunshine by the fountain, and the noble elephant on the wall Andrew's cranes on the Dome was lively and ethereal and Adam's Nuke job was very cool. Mark's dog chasing the cat and getting squashed by the car tire was hilarious and Jeremy did another fantastic Garfield story line However.............drum roll My vote goes to Dave L's tip of the hat to Bob's Java Jive – a Tacoma icon of which Tacoman's came together recently to save from going under, an act that exemplifies our True Grit. Dave’s rendering was quieter than many of the other entries, yet just as beautiful and elegantly executed. |
by ADTeeny on 8/8/2008 @ 5:07pm | i vote for team dawn |
by Mofo from the Hood on 8/8/2008 @ 5:22pm | This is iit. This is i i i i t!
! A N D R E A ! Wicked Viewpoint and Color Scheme! Dynamic Line Work! This Contest is Over except for the Shouting! ! A N D R E A ! |
by Steph DeRosa on 8/8/2008 @ 5:26pm | ok, excuse my ignorance...what's the link to vote?
|
by KevinFreitas on 8/8/2008 @ 5:41pm | @Steph: Just vote. Take a look at the pics of who did what piece in the comments above. Then say and explain who you like -- that's it. Consequently, the time lapse video is posted! |
by jenyum on 8/8/2008 @ 5:43pm | Hi Steph,
You just vote here in the thread by saying something like "I vote for jcbetty, Steph and Dawn" which is who I'm voting for. Because I'm loving the colors and the sentiment. |
by Steph DeRosa on 8/8/2008 @ 5:45pm | awesome cool thanks guys. |
by NineInchNachos on 8/8/2008 @ 5:51pm | wicked video kevin! |
by Steph DeRosa on 8/8/2008 @ 5:57pm | OK, so I vote for Dawn and Jess. Even though I helped a teensy bit, I really do believe that Dawn and Jess deserve this week's prize.
All of the entries were amazing, and it was fun to be a part of it all. Izenman, I bet you kept that flower in your hair all day. Don't lie. |
by Elle on 8/8/2008 @ 5:58pm | I'm going to have to go with team Dawntown on this one. oooh shiny and colorful.
Sorry to miss it this week. My own personal crappa is still not clean, but I had a nice time dining with my boys at Sea Grill after scoping out the space for Showcase tomorrow. I'll be up on the hill in front of the Willow's Photography booth. Gotta hang with my girl |
by Mark Monlux on 8/8/2008 @ 6:14pm | My wife says she votes for my kitties. I'm truly torn about who to vote for. I want to say Dawn and Jess, but I'm going to vote for Son of Cloud. I love the deep solid colors! So vibrant! So familiar! And very awesome video Kevin. |
by NineInchNachos on 8/8/2008 @ 6:43pm | FROST PARK COMMUNITY UPDATE!
Special thanks to TODD MATTHEWS editor of the TACOMA DAILY INDEX for the best baby book in the galaxy. If you have the right kind of humor this is the book for you. BIG FOOT: I NOT DEAD |
![]() by chrism39 on 8/8/2008 @ 7:03pm | I vote for dawn , steph and jess. Those colors are beautiful. |
![]() by LoTac on 8/8/2008 @ 7:10pm | I've been following this awesome event for awhile but this is my first time voting. Thanks to all who made this corner of Tacoma a bit more beautiful! I have to place my vote for what seems to be called Dawntown.... Dawn, Steph, and jcbetty - I love the colors, the references, and of course the love :) |
by mzkrug on 8/8/2008 @ 8:26pm | My vote is for Jeremy, the Garfield Kid!! |
by Erik on 8/8/2008 @ 8:53pm | Great submissions today.
Dave L.'s Java Jive was awesome. Andrea's Spider Man detail work with muscle, shadow, and light was amazing and would have carried the day with a Tacoma theme. Monlux: so nice. So clean and fun. RR's rendition is one for the history books. Dawn and Jessica's piece did it all. A monster size piece with action, tons of color, supersized. The piece carried the day with raw power. A multi color monster blast out of the Jane's Hot Shop. If that wasn't enough, they threw in a ton of "extras" coffee, hot dogs and other fun. The blast is just overwhelming. I vote for it. Nice work on the time lapse Kevin. |
by judges19merescued on 8/8/2008 @ 9:05pm | Holy crap! These are awesome! Sorry, Unknown--cannot vote for the submission that to admit being able to see would qualify me for a twelve step program. I am all about the crazy colors, and anything smacking of twisted humor speaks to me on so many levels--but I am casting my vote for Dave L.'s Java Jive. It just looks so stinkin' sweet in chalk... |
by jamesstoweart on 8/8/2008 @ 10:29pm | Sto votes for Mark Monlux. He would vote himself but he's actually half asleep so I'm typing it in for him. |
by Courtney on 8/8/2008 @ 10:34pm | I would like to vote for JCBetty and Dawn. What a beautiful piece. Mark was a close second for me as well. And I was very happy to see that the Garfield Kid was back! We've missed you! |
by UnstableArt on 8/8/2008 @ 11:23pm | I vote for Adam the Alien. Clever, relevant, well executed, and great style! |
by anubismp on 8/8/2008 @ 11:28pm | I'm tied up between AFs construction cranes and Mark Monluxs cats and dog. I guess I'll go for AF for wittiness. |
by tacomachickadee on 8/8/2008 @ 11:41pm | My vote: I will vote for my dear bro Adam the Alien, as he yet again made a great use of leftover chalk. (Came close to the Java Jive & the Dawn club's piece, but there you go.)
The boy's vote: Andrea's Spiderman. (Duh ... the boy IS 5 going on 6 after all ... draw a super hero and he's yours.) Lil' Chickadee/Diva Daughter: Dawn club's full-color fabulousness. (I liked Adam's too.) |
by deeble interactive on 8/8/2008 @ 11:48pm | I vote for lance |
by Dianne on 8/9/2008 @ 1:10am | I vote for Jeremy if it is not too late. We just got home. My second choice would be Mark's cats. I really liked those. |
by JeremyScott on 8/9/2008 @ 1:12am | I vote for Garfield.
|
by Rue on 8/9/2008 @ 2:03am | Dave L gets my vote. What a great tribute to a Tacoma landmark! |
by dawntown on 8/9/2008 @ 9:54am | What a fun packed day yesterday was, for everyone. So much so, votes never got tallied. Seeing as I was gunning FTW, I will tally the votes (is this possible? Only in Frost Park!) Team Dawntown (Dawn, JC Betty, Steph DeRosa): 15 Dave L: 4 (5 on a late vote) Andrew: 4 Jeremy: 1 (3 on late votes) Ryan: 2 Andrea: 2 Mark M: 2 Adam: 2 Son of Cloud: 1 So, yay! We win! That was a super-neato collaboration, which I have to say was the brainchild of one ambitious "Go Big" chalkie, JCBetty. I was there just to keep her britches up and keep the crack levels down in the time-lapsed video, which OMG is going to be freaking awesome in future Chalk-Off community building efforts. Thank you, thank you, Kevin, you are the best. And a big THANK YOU to the efforts of StePH! It was nice to see you out there, come back any time! Although we has some MIA regulars, Frost Park had one fantastic turn-out, and some really clever entries. This was, by far, my favorite Frost Park Friday to date. The colors, ideas, and involvement was tops! I had no time to reflect on the entries yesterday, so if I wasn't trying to secure my win, the entries I would have consider for votes were Son of Cloud/ Laura and The Cranes. Others I was most happy to see were the Java Jive, Accordion, and the Cats (nice blood work on JCB's tires). RR, you thrill me with your cleverness every week, but that stanker was boss! |
by UnstableArt on 8/9/2008 @ 10:47am | Whew! Yesterday's Chalk-Off yielded a veritable color explosion! Congratulations Team DawnTown! |
by Erik on 8/9/2008 @ 10:58am | So, yay! We win! Congrats Dawn, JC Betty and DeRosa. DeRosa looks to have improved greatly. Here was an earlier submission she made in Episode II: ![]() Full size: www.flickr.com/photos/tacoma-urbanist/24... DeRosa writes about the entry today in Spew and posts her picture: Yesterday at noon, a worldly and explosive collaboration was made at the Frost Park Chalk Off. It involved the talented Dawn Fortner, Jessica Corey-Butler, and myself . . . I definitely added a small DeRosa touch to the chalk art piece ![]() weeklyvolcano.typepad.com/spew/2008/08/v... DeRosa also attributes the group win to the chalk: Dawn’s creative force brought on a theme of explosive Tacoma love ala “Volcano." Her adaptation of Tacoma’s Glass Museum “spewing†love had people gawking at the brightly colored pastels. ($18 Prang set at Tacoma Art Supply, FYI.) |
by Erik on 8/9/2008 @ 11:10am | ![]() ![]() Here Dawn and Jessica display the winner squat, the equivalent of the winning "chalk gesture" in earlier Chalk Off Episodes: ![]() |
by Erik on 8/9/2008 @ 11:29am | Everyone is looking forward to the teams cutting edge creative display at The Winthrop:![]() Full Size: www.flickr.com/photos/tacoma-urbanist/27... Yet, there is a slew of artistic window displays in Tacoma. What, if anything, will set this one apart? While designing their art, Dawn Derosa, and JcBetty would be wise to do some soul searching and remember the words of RR Anderson for inspiration and motivation: ...there are several different layers of professional artist. there is the ‘fluff’ artist which is a favorite of Tacoma arts commission funding or who make pretty glass fruit bowls …and then there is the category of artists whom bring the inanimate into the realm of the living and or forge their will upon the world. i.feedtacoma.com/Erik/frost-park-friday-... Tacomans look forward to what the "Best Illustrators in the Universe of Tacoma" (for the week) will create in the center of downtown which thousands of LINK riders will view. |

Nice work superstars! |
![]() by lynndin on 8/9/2008 @ 12:25pm | wow. my first time voting, albiet from a library computer since mine is in the shop. I think many of them are brilliant (in addition to the vibrant colors), but my favorite is Dave L's version of Java Jive. . .Lynn |

by Dave_L on 8/9/2008 @ 3:41pm | I have a lot to learn, and need a lot more practice. Getting any votes at all is neat, but I feel like the winner this week after getting votes from people I really dig, and whose talent I respect a lot; thank you. Makes this non-artist want to do better next time. I wanted to mention that while I hadn't thought of a good twist to use for the Java Jive, I decided to go ahead with it this week because Teddy Haggerty has become a fan of the Frost Park Chalk Challenge, and he's been a fixture at the Jive for a long time. He painted the jungle murals on the exterior. I also threw in a plug for Historic Tacoma, which is relevant because Historic Tacoma is presenting and open house today (Aug 9th) of notable and legendary Tacoma exhibit designer and sometime-architect, Bert Smyser's House. Bert designed the Coffee Pot Restaurant (later to become the Java Jive), and other buildings that became important to Tacoma history. There are a few more hours to go until the open house ends at 6pm. It's in Puyallup at 4907 66th Ave E., which is the road at the green bridge half-way down River Road. At the stoplight, turn away from the river and Smyser's 1941 Streamline Moderne house will be on the left.

by Steph DeRosa on 8/9/2008 @ 4:53pm | @Erik - you are so funny! Truth be known, I have not improved one single bit. I refuse! Besides, I'm way too intimidated by all the fierce chalkie talk I hear.
Thanks again guys for allowing me to take part in such a great community event. PS - my ass in that photo is hilarious. Can I say ass on the feed? Well I just did. Here, I'll say it again: Ass. |

by Erik on 8/19/2008 @ 3:43pm | Update: Here's how the Winthrop Hotel art window display looks to date: ![]() The space thus far consists of Frost Park posters and large water bottles. Edgy. Ultra modern. Open space. Minimalistic. Perhaps Dawn and Jessica are just ramping up. |
by dawntown on 8/19/2008 @ 8:38pm | Perhaps the creative spirit has taken a haitus to regroup for some off the hiZzy shite.
