City of Tacoma Enters the World of YouTube and Releases Promotional Video

Challenge: How many Tacomans can you identify in City's video?

Commentary:

It is official.  The City of Tacoma has now entered the world of YouTube and they now have their own YouTube Channel with their first video.

The video is prominently linked on the entry page of the City of Tacoma website. Visitors to the city's website are invited to "[w]atch a video and get to know Tacoma."

Nice to see Tacoma finally enter the world of You Tube.  TV Tacoma is a nice resource.  However, it is not connected to YouTube where most videos are located.  Plus, Firefox cannot even play videos (at least mine doesn't) from TV Tacoma.

City officials may want to give the promotional video a different title.  Right now, the video has the title "QOL Music Bed 1-DVDS_QT 1Mbps_001.mov" which does not work very well in search engines. This is probably the file name the video had.

It's a nice start.  Have you watched the official welcoming video for the City of Tacoma?

How do you rate it from one to 10?  How could it be improved?

The city may want to contact Kevin Freitas or Adam the Alien to get more knowledge of how to best promote videos in YouTub, the internets and through the Feed.

I give it a 6. Solid content but the voice overs lack character (sorry Madame Mayor), the title graphics are stale (Times New Roman, really?), and the music is boring stock elevator junk (I imagine we have some local musicians who would be happy to lend a track or two). It's also too long for a web video. 1-2 minutes max to hold internet user's short attention spans.

Though I'm not primarily a video guy I'm happy to team up with some folks to put together our own alternative or even shorter series of alternatives. Any takers?

It was pretty good. As Kev mentioned it's overlong. If you're going to have people doing testimonials it would be good to select hot women rather than overweight men. The music wasn't very edgy.

is it the one from shift happens?

The best part of the Tacoma video is the closing moments where the guy's testimonial has a cuckoo bird sound.

by fredo on 2/17/2011 @ 7:54am
The cuckoo sound was the engineers mistake. It was supposed to occur while the mayor was speaking.

It was nicely edited, but very 1990's on it's style and technique. I think you could break it down into segments: Art, community, nature, people, transit. with 1-2 minute videos for each, then have a 1-2 minute "executive summary" video that just touches on each of those, grabbing the "nugget of incitefulness" from each of the detail videos.

The canned documentary music is so retro it might be ironically cool in a couple of years. They should try again using something other than TV Tacoma staff (which seems to be stuck in the early '90s at best from an aesthetic perspective).

I give it a 4 or 5. The video/interviews are fine, but the music and canned narrative makes it hard to watch.

REMIX VIDEO CHALLENGE!
can somebody convert this into an MOV ?

by ixia on 2/17/2011 @ 9:40am
The music is painful - it smells of hairspray.

by Jesse on 2/17/2011 @ 9:40am
Is there a date said in the video? If it stays on youtube for years, tacoma could/ will change a lot over the next few years.

by Erik on 2/17/2011 @ 9:47am
@Kevin: Thanks for the numerical rating.

For the very FIRST video made and for entering the world of You Tube, I give the City of Tacoma high marks.

Content of voice over and video shots.

8.5/10

In order to address bad stereotypes of Tacoma, the phrase "New Tacoma: is used. Great hots of downtown are included which show what great shape they are in. Good neighborhood are mentioned with some good shots.

Late night commercials use testimonials a lot and I think that they are effective.

Sound track music ; tone of voice overs

5.5/10

The generic sound track of the video reminds me a bit of Real Estate videos and conveys to the listener that this will be a boring video. Length is too long for watchers and the video moves too slow for viewers.

Also, focusing on the person giving the testimonial is boring overkill. One can have the testimonial while visually showing other parts of Tacoma.

Quality of Video and Sound

9.2/10

Awesome quality shots and sound. This is the best part.

Use of YouTube, marketing and prominence

6.5/10

It is awesome that the city linked the video to the first page. However, they need to figure out how YouTube works internally and with Google. They city has some GoLocal/Shift happening options hiring local folks for very cheap that could help them.

Overall Rating

Considering that this is the city's very, very first attempt, I give them an adjusted 8.2/10 and a major thumbs up for their effort and for all of the participants.

Objectively, the video rates (not necessarily adding the above components up) 7.4/10.

Tacoma's is better than that.

I'll give the video a 5 for the reasons previously mentioned.

It starts out pretty slow with some forgettable babbling from the Mayor then concludes with a guy who looks like he forgot to iron his shirt mumbling something about Tacoma being a good place for drinking beer. WOW, that ought to light up the phone lines at the Visitors Bureau!

i smell alcohol lobby interference. tacoma's budding dispensary industry is lodging an official ftc complaint aout truth in advertising tacoma

by NineInchNachos on 2/17/2011 @ 3:18pm
I humbly request a Cissero parody youtube video.

by jenyum on 2/17/2011 @ 11:15pm
I agree with Kevin that the graphics and typography are distractingly bad. Other than the canned music, a couple of aesthetic things and a lack of diversity in the people they talked to about Tacoma (a wider age range would be especially nice) it was a nice little video.

by KevinFreitas on 2/18/2011 @ 6:38am
@jesse -- It was definitely done within the last year or so considering our [relatively] new Mayor is featured as well as the lack of the Luzon building in the panning shot of the Pacific Plaza building toward the beginning.
