From the Crucible of Frost Park: Battle Art is Born
Perhaps even more organic that Kulture Lab art is a growing genre of art born from the crucible of downtown Tacoma Frost Park Challenge.
Few if any in Tacoma could match the artistic talent exhibited by Jean Graves in her recent critique of Tacomic Illustrators of the Future. Yet, as limited as we are in Tacoma with few visiting Seattle artists to assist us, we are left to do the best we can.
Exhibit I : Pre Frost Park Era

Possible Title : Does RR Stand Alone?
Availability : Check with artist for original or prints.
RR Anderson Self Portrait: The Lonely Warrior Statute
In an effort to draw out some kind of engagement in Tacoma, RR outdoes himself in self deprecation and personal humiliation in the piece. Here, RR portrays himself as the lonely, near naked, slight warrior alone in Tacoma's notorious deserted Tollefson Plaza.Exhibit II : The Early Era
Possible title : Death of the Jester
Availability : Check with artist for original or prints.
In this piece, Andrea “LupinGoddess” Trenbeath Lowen produces the first fully formed Frost Park Battle art piece at a time in which Frost Park was a barren often rainy windswept plaza.
Though decapitated, RR's isolation and loneliness have finally ended. As in the movie Fight Club, the meaning is gained in the confrontation itself making the particular victor of a battle trivial.
Exhibit III : A Maturing Genre
Possible title : Mutant Chalk Attack
Availability : Check with artist for original or prints.
Here, Stowe employs an old standby from improvisation theater which is to accept and "says yes" to other actor's movements and characters on stage. Stowe's character portrayed is based on an old Halloween costume I had found in Stowe's remote archives.
Stow combines it with his first Frost Park submission (an orange monkey) which gives the piece a lot of familiarity character strength. Notice, the first use of color and action in this Frost Park piece.
Update: Stowe has drawn : Frost Park Battle Art Evolution:

by jamesstoweart on 5/6/2008 @ 9:40am | She needs to bring the pre-chalk battle art this week... |
by Erik on 5/6/2008 @ 10:44am | nice, but where does elle fit in?
Tacomachickadee promised another picture of her this weekend that I might use for the FP preview but I have not received it yet. She needs to bring the pre-chalk battle art this week... True, she's the only winner to date that has not drawn any. |
by Erik on 5/6/2008 @ 10:57am | Stowe just sent me a composite sketch showing the "evolution" of Frost Park battle art:![]() Full size: www.flickr.com/photos/tacoma-urbanist/24... |
by Mandiferous on 5/6/2008 @ 10:58am | Elle's art is pretty and full of flowers and swirly things. She doesn't wanna fight, she wants to hug!
(And now she will probably make a complete liar out of me by posting something truly grotesque and intimidating) |
by NineInchNachos on 5/6/2008 @ 11:06am | Stowe's new illustration is funny as hell |
by Elle on 5/6/2008 @ 12:31pm | NIN - you just had to post that photo of me didn't you? Erik - We planned to take better photos, but got distracted by something shiny. In the mean time I will distract you with ponies and butterflies in the hopes it will make you sick from the cuteness. ![]() Yeah, I modified my web banner. Best I could do in a pinch. |
by Erik on 5/6/2008 @ 1:41pm | In the mean time I will distract you with ponies and butterflies in the hopes it will make you sick from the cuteness. You have no doubt caused RR substantial pain with that post Elle on several different levels. :) |
by Adam the Alien on 5/7/2008 @ 7:39am | I decided to take it upon myself to draw a battle pic for Elle.![]() You can view the large version (or at least the largest version I've uploaded) by clicking here. (Hm. I've only just realized that I forgot her eyebrow. Oh well. I'll fix it later. Maybe.) |
by Elle on 5/7/2008 @ 7:50am | Thanks Adam... Remember, I know where you live. |
by Adam the Alien on 5/7/2008 @ 7:59am | And I know how to kill a man with my pinky!
...Okay, I don't really know how to kill a man with my pinky. But wouldn't it be cool if I did? Right then...off to find myself a good hiding place. |
by Erik on 5/7/2008 @ 11:00am | I decided to take it upon myself to draw a battle pic for Elle. Nice work Adam. Elle has some other strong character themes going as well we will see how they integrate. As drawn, I am afraid it would cause much visual pain for many readers from the colors. |
by UnstableArt on 5/10/2008 @ 3:27pm | I absolutely LOVE this! Had to save the image and the "Episode V" poster to my desktop.
I have to admit my favorite aspect is the black bar bikini ensemble my battle character's sporting. Love it James! XD |
