Frost Park Battle 4 253 DB Glory; Izenman to Headline

Banner by Lance Kagey

Today is Frost Park Friday at Noon in downtown Tacoma at 9th and Pacific Avenue.   Everyone is invited.

Episode XX: Week 20

Without further delay, here is RR's message just released:

HIPSTERS WANTED:

First comes a HIGH, a period of confident expansion as a new order takes root after the old has been swept away.

Next comes an AWAKENING, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion against the now-established order.

Then comes an  UNRAVELING, an increasingly troubled era in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions.

Last comes a CRISIS when society passes  through a great and perilous gate in history.

Together, THESE FOUR COMINGS comprise history's seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth...

Izenman Set To Headline Frost Park?

Here what Joe Izenman boldly told us last week:

"That said... I'm certainly willing to step up and play a bit this Friday if no-one else is so inclined.  As long as I can figure out some means of getting my gear down the hill."

Hopefully, Tacomans all through downtown and around Frost Park will get to hear him play.

Rules for Chalk Art Contest:

We are making them up as we go.  However, the contest starts at 12:00 noon and ends at 1:00 p.m.  There are other rules in the official chalk off rulebook.

Feel free to post any pictures of the chalk art work below in this post or link to pictures or picture sets including close up shots that may make your favored piece look better or your opponents look worse.

Voting For Chalk Art Submissions (Revised)

Please vote for the chalk art entry you believe is the best in the comment section below.  Explaining why you believe the piece is the best will add considerable context and meaning to your vote.

No doubt you will have friends and acquaintances who are in the contest.  Do your best to be as objective as you can in your analysis of the chalk submissions which will strengthen the participatory voting system in place.

Frost Park Challengers are encouraged to vote as well for an additional perspective to the event.

Each person gets one vote.  Votes will be accepted until midnight on Friday after which the winner will be declared.  Votes will be accepted starting at 1:00 p.m.

Please use the word "vote" for easy reference to the chalk submission that you believe is the best.

Elizabeth was able to complete the Frost Park puzzle in the Weekly Volcano this week.

No an easy task this week though. The "2" can be tricky and one false move and you have to start again with a new Weekly Volcano.

As long as I can figure out some means of getting my gear down the hill

That's the key statement right there. And the reason why it probably ain't happenin'.

It is not my mandolin. And in that environment without an amp, a performer would be heard by the two people right next to him and that's about it.

As one of the two people who sat next to Izenmania the last time he played an acoustic set in Frost Park, I can vouch for that.

Now the Weekly Volcano via "Spew" is carrying RR Anderson's weekly inspirational ministerial message to the Tacoma masses:

The following was written by Tacoma artist R.R. Anderson describing today’s Frost Park Chalk Challenge 20. It’s brilliant. I yanked it from the Tacoma Urbanist’s site. Enjoy.

Interesting things this week:

More music! Three guys with guitars rocking out. Cool stuff.

Kittens! The Stowe clan bought a box of kittens they found in an alley. By the end of the hour I believe most of them had found homes.

Free lunch! A small army of Boys and Girls Club kids came through offering free bag lunches to anyone who wanted them. Most of the chalkies had already eaten, but it was cool to see, and I hope they found some takers up on Commerce.

I think the only one missing was a clear shot of Andrea's "nude"

which the mayor stopped at to look at for awhile. Welcome to Frost Park Mr. Mayor.

Lots of good stuff. Currently torn between RR and Joel's entries.

And I'm sure AdamTheAlien will appreciate that he was incorporated into the octopus piece since he couldn't be herein person today. See Adam! YOU WERE HERE IN SPIRIT!

Lots of good stuff. Currently torn between RR

You mean literally? Between the 'R' and the other 'R'?

Isn't there an 'X' there?

If you are voting for 'X' and 'X' is a variable then according to New Math 'X' equals 'Stowe'.

Weird huh.

by jamesstoweart
on 8/22/2008 @ 2:31pm
dang it... you edited... now my above rant seems like pure crazy speak.

In other news... I want to thank everyone that gave those poor kittens a good home today. I would also like to throttle the guy that threw them in a box under other boxes in the middle of the alley behind my house.

Some &#$^% people.

by NineInchNachos
on 8/22/2008 @ 2:33pm
Stowe you get cute kittens, we only get soiled/bloody mattresses in our alley.

by Altered Chords
on 8/22/2008 @ 2:37pm
I vote for Andrea's nude w/ the wierd hands and long hair and light coming out of her head.

If I met a woman who looked like that I would just sit at home with that long haired light out of head woman with odd hands. I guess I'd have to do all the cooking. Don't think she'd be good w/ pots/pans/vacuum cleaner.

by NineInchNachos
on 8/22/2008 @ 2:39pm
I knew the Mayor would be a fan of Andrea's violent-orgasm metaphor painting.

Wow, I missed a LOT today; more music, kittens, the mayor….
I had done an unnoticed, tiny Learn-to-Draw Tippy-the-Turtle several weeks ago, but it’s nice to see Monlux’s excellent (color) rendition. It brings back memories, and as such, I have to cast my VOTE for it. (But I can now forget about doing the pirate in the future). Did they only have those in comics back in my day? www.creativepro.com/article/creativepros...
Joel413’s Frost Park/Love Park 253/LOVE is great. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOVE_Park
RxR, I really like yours today too - picture and message. I'd like to get you to do a Chrysler for me someday.
There are some really great works today, many of which I could also have voted for, and they look very nice on-line.

by tacomachickadee

jamesstoweart: Sorry. I was editing a typo and the ampersand I had did that "cut off the rest of the post" thing it sometimes does. So you caught me mid-boo-boo fixing.

And I assume that &#$^% people are people who leave little kittens in boxes in alleys, not the ones who try to fix their blog typos. ;) Glad they all found homes ... very cute.

on 8/22/2008 @ 2:51pm
Oh, and if signing up isn't working for anyone, please let me know by sending me an email so I can fix 'er up. All are welcome so I don't want to let any glitches get in the way.

Oh, and I vote for RR's Life is a Gas. It was very dynamic.

And I would like to suggest a theme for next week. I think it would be a hoot if everyone tried a hand at drawing the cowboy.

Mark: Love the blue rather than black outline ... very edgy. hahahahahaha ...

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I knew the Mayor would be a fan of Andrea's ...metaphor painting.

I think it shocked him a it. Though not as much as the Hathaway chalk piece might have.

His initial comment was walking across the street that he thought it might be SOTA students which I guess is true to some degree.

Perhaps he though it was SOTA kids drawing nudes.

Also, nice that Frost Park had a band today:

Perhaps Izenmania will headline next week.

@mark_l Thanks for picking up on the theme/source of my work, I was going to come and post the inspiration.

@tacomachickadee The only problem with prang is that its sooo soft! a first time frost park'r should be careful using hat stuff!

Thanks everyone for you kind coments so far, I won't mention that the only 'art' training I have is public school art class and Commander Mark.

COMMANDER MARK!

Joel413 gets my vote. Man, I have got to work on my knee-jerk blind devotion Commander Mark fetish. Regardless though, Joel invoked his holy name so he must get my vote.

And sorry, we only had one kitty left after the Chalk Off and he has already been dropped off at the Gazecki humane society. But he might still be there, waiting for you with his cute turned down ears and pitiful mew.

by Dave_L

Speaking of that, perhaps not as freaky as the Lance/Mark coincidence, but I just noticed that RR’s ’57 Chevy and Andreas long-haired-light-out-of-head-woman-with-odd-hands are every similar, Dagmar-wise. I would have noticed earlier, but I, too, have been under the weather a few days… However this thread of follow-up comments are the best laughs I’ve had all week!

Yeah, putting the classic car on blocks is an awesome twist on Lemay. The car is beautiful. One of RR's best pieces.

Then again, who am I to go against the Mayor who seemed memorized and a bit enamored with Andrea's cosmic exploding nude tar woman? (accumulating the descriptions above).

RR's LeMay Museum Rant...

so this rich asshole obsessive/compulsively buys a crap load of cars. We're talking an obscene number of cars. You know that expression you can own all the rice fields in all of china but you can only eat one bowl of rice at a time? Well its like that only with cars. So long story short, this asshole dies (Rosebud!!!) what do we do with all the cars? the City of Tacoma donates 15 million dollars worth of land so that they can build a giant PARKING GARAGE only you cant park anything in it cuz its filled with ALL THESE GEEZER'S CARS!

I would like to propose an even more interesting museum prospect to the people of Tacoma. A Museum of Parking Garages. I imagine this building to be the size of a mountain filled with all the old parking structures we'll be ripping out of Downtown as soon as we realize the insanity of Tacoma's parking laws.

thank you.

RR's LeMay Museum Rant...

There you go folks, RR Anderson's plea for votes for his LeMay piece.

We will see how it plays out with the blogosphere jury in the next 6 house in this close chalk off contest. I have to admit it had a strong ending.

by ElectricElliot

Andrea's nude was textbook beauty, and the 253/Love piece was striking, but when you add a compelling back story to fine-art, you get an electric vote.

I gotta got for the CaRxR. Stunning rendering and great message! Really loved the work of the SOTA kids and squid and newcomer Gene's(?) piece at the bottom of the hill facing Pacific. Super creepyville though that Lance and Mark were so aligned this week.

Cheers all and see you next week!

ok. I am going to have to vote for Joel .., the Hipster tie-in with Daniel Blue's 253 heart ... bringing in the Philly influence ... And the Warhol effect (oh, Tacoma Dome, what could have been) ... it's a grand slam ... and if this was RCV, well, I had been putting exclamations points in the the number two box.

I VOTE FOR JOEL413.

Dear Altered Chords. The graphic you use as an avatar was created by a friend of mine in the early 90s. She and I both were contracted by a company called 3G Graphics to create vector clip art back when Illustrator was in its beta version. 3G later sold their archive of clip art to Microsoft, who in turn installed it in their Office clip art. Now I see the stuff I did for mere pennies all over the world. The last I heard of my friend she got burned out on art, was taking pastry classes and lived in a tent in the woods. Moral? Never sign away the rights to your work just to get the job.

The ultimate combined submission would be to have Andrea's exploding woman piece on top of RR's LeMay car.

My dad grew up in Shelton. at one point in the high school years he came into possession of two of these machines. a GOLD 57' chevy with a 4 barrel carburetor configuration and big racing slicks on the rear axle IN ADDITION TO a navy blue 57' Chevy cruiser 'for the ladies'. He said he could drain completely the gas tank of the GOLD car in a few hours out on the speed way.

throughout my childhood, playing with hot wheels, my dad would reminisce about the time of 10 cent gallon gasoline... high speeds and friendly young ladies. He'd pick out the 57 chevy hot wheel and say "son this is the best one." I'd play with those little toy cars imagining my miniaturized dad zipping around in those carefree days.

I was divided between Mark's and Lance's tributes to the Art Instruction School's "draw me" characters.

Even though I chose to submit a drawing of the turtle back when I was 14 (- won the scholarship, by the way), this time I'm going with the pirate; Monlux's addition of the hand gives it some action and the colors are great.

I vote for Monlux's "Draw the Pirate".

I gotta love the LOVE, it being transcontinental and all, although I really enjoyed seeing 'nude' on top of a Chevy.

1 vote for Joel413.

Oh my goodness, it still gives me goosebumps to think that Mark and Lance chose the SAME theme this week...kinda freaky... but oh my! that Mary Kay car was fabulous! I vote for the Mary Kay car!!!

I vote for Andreas exploding head tar woman. RRs Le May auto was great but you should have teamed up with the Garfield kid for a rendition of that garfield movie when all of the hawaiians are worshipping jon arbuckles car and chanting "Chrome". ;p Great art everyone.

I vote for the Garfield roller coaster. Although I might not actually go on that roller coaster. I like roller coasters, just not ones that might try to eat me.

We have two of the baby kitties. One is gray named Garfield. Guess who named that one. The black one is named Captain Jack Sparrow.

It nice to have musicians again this week. Maybe we'll get live music every week.

I vote for my roller coaster Garfield that looks like you are being eaten when you ride it and its jaws open and close.

I am disappointed that there aren't more photos posted in the actual thread. At 11:43 p.m. it leaves me little time to click through all of the photo sets. You guys are getting lazy (says the woman who only ever links to her Picassa album).

That being said, I miss you guys. But I'm glad to see that Joel was there to represent my little world and my vote goes to him. Use of color, little person talent and subject matter clinched it for me.

Alas, I did not get my computer turned on and logged on until it was too late to vote. And I was already sad enough that I missed the 20th chalk-off. I am, however, flattered to see that Adam the Alien was still present amidst the chalk, even if Adam J. Manley was not. I originally planned to make it back to Tacoma in time, but plans...they are fickle things.

Which just means most of you will have to wait until next week to see my new hat.

Ok. Its 1:44 a.m. in the morning but I was still able to count the votes twice and here's how it turned out:

RR............9
Joel413.....8
Andrea......6
Jeremy......3
Monlux......2

Total votes cast 28

RR Anderson wins Episode XX!

RR was a reluctant winner. He knew it was close and he was on the edge of winning but he voted for Joel anyway.

Though RR was the founder of the chalk offs, he has not won since Episode VII when he submitted "Hathaway":

With RR Anderson's win, the soul of Daniel Blue's creative energies contained in his icon 253 shirt now go into the bowels of Holistic Forge Works.

Will RR don the 253 shirt? Unlikely. I suspect RR will keep it as a trophy or brutality transform it into an art piece of his own..

hooray for chrome! I will wear my shirt when the lovely Ms. Darcy wears her loyalty tacoma 253 skull shirt... channeling the powers of Blue together.

RR that car was simply amazing, it is no joke that it is a masterpiece.

Really if you haven't seen it live, go look at it today!

Thanks everyone for your kind words I had a lot of fun, and I now know how difficult it is to produce such amazing work in such a short amount of time.

I hope to be able to come and calk again sometime!

Way to go RR!

Now to convince this wonderful group to all draw the cowbody next week.

I wonder what Jeremy's Garfield cowboy would look like.

This Frost Park event continues to to become more and more multi-faceted. Congratulations, RR - There were a few weeks in the past where I thought you deserved to win, so I'm glad you got one again. And congratulations to Joel for the extremely close 2nd. I'm going to sneak out there and put some Halibrand wheels or a set of Torque-Thrusts on RR's Chevy. And some Red-Lines in tribute to his Hot Wheels. For the record, I can't wait for the LeMay Museum* - LA's to far to go for the Petersen Museum But then again there's a nice MoPar show at Frontier Park tomorrow.
*It's O.K., I'm the one who liked the air-show, too.

also, these voting threads are a delight. Verily, you folks make frost park a place worth caring about.

Nice work team!

Up on blocks is the only way you could afford to own that bad boy.

My dad owned that very car when I was a kiddo, in primer pink the whole time I knew it because he was too busy souping up my mom's ride to get a real coat of paint on his own. Ma's sky blue '55 Bel Air was the car I learned to drive on. "Fifteen gallons a mile!" we used to say. And how. That baby hauled asssssss.

here's a good article that pretty well sums up the insanity of Harold LeMay...

"TACOMA, WASH. - Harold LeMay liked to collect things. Coca-Cola memorabilia, neon signs, gas pumps, outboard motors, salt and pepper shakers, sausage grinders, blow torches, tools, farm equipment - you name it, he collected it."

Maybe there is a LeMay sausage grinder museum in Tacoma's future. Where exactly would be the sausage district?

by ixia
on 8/27/2008 @ 2:26pm
The historic Tacoma Sausage Grinder District can be found between St.Helens and Market Street, between S. 7th and S. 9th Streets.
Bring your meats there and watch what happens, 9 am to 5 pm, closed on holidays.
