Italian Restaurant "Merende" Opens Downtown Aug 18

il Trattoria di Merende Restaurant to open August 18th at 826 Pacific Avenue in the former Vin Grotto location next to Paddy Coynes.

Signage on Pacific Avenue

Restaurant Layout

The restaurant layout is pretty well finalized now.  The bar is located on the left side of the restaurant and near the front of the entrance with dining on the right.  No more having to go to the back to eat.

The office of Vin Grotto has been removed for seating.

The floor has some interesting tile.

Menu:

The Volcano has a sneak peak available on the menu.

They are set to have a slew of small bites:

Bishop told the Weekly Volcano today that the menu will, of course, be Italian with special emphasis on small plates to be shared.  They’ll feature locally produced, organic ingredients as much as possible inside a homey decor with straw and terracotta colors.

Bonus Restaurant Features

Merendes has an outside seating area which allows for viewing Frost Park Chalk Offs easily as it is only half a block away from the park.

Good Luck Merende!  Welcome to the neighborhood.

Two Blocks That "Work" in Tacoma

The 700 and 800 blocks of Pacific Avenue are one of the most functional, and therefore, of the best parts of downtown Tacoma.

Within two blocks, Capers, Meconi's, Matador, Paddy Coynes and soon Merende have outside eating areas spilling into the street with abundant life.  The area does not need be "programmed" to have life in the area once a year.

These two blocks are one of the few places downtown which functions as designed and offers some sort of civic life.  So many areas downtown have been either bulldozed by the city, butchered by parking garages or some other post modern structure and are void of life.

Since 1960, Tacoma has constructed one urban design failure after another.  Its as if the knowledge in constructing successful buildings and neighborhoods 100 years ago has been lost.

As Tacoma struggles to build a city worth caring about and worth living in, it's nice that Tacoma has at least a small functioning urban example to demonstrate how it can be accomplished.  We should make the plethary of Tacoma planners and consultants come take notes and make sketches of the area.

The 800 Block of Pacific has a lot more going on than just Paddy Coynes. India Mahal is an extremely popular restaurant and the Learning Sprout is arguably the best toy store and teacher supply center in Tacoma. Ever After is a charming gift store with a variety of items appealing to kids and adults. They have been in Tacoma for many years and moved onto our block from Broadway after realizing their business would be negatively impacted by the LID.

The Holideck Spa has been here nearly two years now and has a great group of people and services that are used by the people that stay in my vacation rentals upstairs. The Spa is has a beautiful atmosphere and smells wonderful, relaxing, and inviting inside.

Rainier is a successful and local telecommunications company and Venture Bank is a local bank with a community of tellers all of whom I know on a first name basis.

Both the Rainier and Venture buildings are owned by their businesses as well, which adds community strength because people care more about buildings they own, not to mention the taxes they pay.

And if you walk around this block you will fine Headliners, a longtime successful salon where I get my hair cut, and Renee's, another salon that has adapted and succeeded through thick and thin!

The people that own the businesses on the 800 block of Tacoma are what have made our block successful. Everyone that owns and operates the businesses and buildings on this block have remodeled their businesses and buildings, have fought together against crime by attending security meetings and supported eachother over the years. They are a force to be reckoned with!

I agree, this is one of the most vibrant parts of downtown, but there's still much to do. If the owners of the Drake building can get off their butts and if Brick City can get their stuff in order, this area will be amazing. I can't wait to see what the new owners of the Olympus Hotel do- it can only get better!

Yeah, there are a slew of vacancies across the street.

Will they offer glass of milk an spumoni included with all meals like old spaghetti factory?

Ask and you may receive!

Old Spaghetti Factory, mmmmmmmmm. How have they managed to stay in business all these decades, through all kinds of business cycles and development cycles in downtown? The spumoni and the garlic butter?

According to Jeff Bishop (Merende chef) this date to open is premature. Don't hold your breath Monday waiting for them to open.

Don't forget about the soon to open Stephanie's Gospel and Jazz in the old Gringo De Loco and older La Casta site.
