Jazz Bar/Restaurant at 928 Pacific Ave Opening on 4/12

Another restaurant is set to open in Downtown Tacoma.

This one at the location of the former La Costa Restaurant.  (I see their free Angelfire web page is still up.)

Today, I spoke with the owner who was doing some heaving cleaning and painting

Property

The restaurant is on its own parcel underneath the North Park Plaza Parking garage and sold for $700,000 on 8/30/2007.

Here's what I could gather in a few short moments from the owner.  Unfortunately, I didn't catch the name of the place if he gave it to me.

Type of Food

Mexican and Cuban.

Music

Jazz.  I think the owner was rushing to get ready for the upcoming Tacoma Jazz and Blues Festival.

Opening Night:

Saturday, April 12, 2008 in a mere 4 days.

Commentary:

La Costa used to be the place to go for Mexican food in downtown Tacoma.  It was pretty amazing that they were able to function underneath the North Park Plaza Parking Garage

Hard to tell from the information I saw how serious he is about the effort or not.  Fortunately, there are already a lot of people coming down on Pacific Avenue.  Plus, there was at least some business by the prior business.

It at ground zero in downtown Tacoma so I am sure I will drop by in the next week.  I wish them luck.  It has the potential to add some life in the area before the parking garage is demolished.

Please post additional details if you have them.

Update: Ron from the Volcano suggests that the will be Gringo de Loco and that the grand opening will be on May 5th.

(Its right near Russell.  Will this new restaurant help keep Russell in Tacoma?)

It will be called Gringo de Loco. He's rushing to get ready for the Gray Sky Blues Festival this Saturday. His official grand opening will be May 5.

Cuban. Great. I just saw the Julian Schnabel film last night. When oppression silences free speech people will express themselves. They do it in music. They do it in poetry. But, like Reinaldo Arenas, they will speak. It will be nice to hear Cuban rhythms emanating from beneath the North Plaza parking structure. Only good things can follow.

Thanks for the info Ron. Should be interesting. There are a lot of people who indicated they would like something like this.

"La Costa used to be the place to go for Mexican food in downtown Tacoma"

Was La Costa really known for the food? I never really heard anything great about it. As far as I know the place was known for the Drag Show which I guess they won't be having anymore. It will be interesting to see how the place does as I have heard the show had big weekend crowds.

I also heard the new owners had no clue about what the city may have in store for the site in the future.

In the early and mid 1990s, it was generally considered "pretty good." Yet, there was little available downtown and going out to eat at lunch was almost synonymous with driving to the waterfront.

Also, the standard for restaurant food has been raised several notches since then as there was little available other than an assortment of grease pits in Tacoma.

Many people drove to Seattle to eat on weekends.

Given how much business the chain restaurants are doing warming up breaded deep fried "food," there is still a huge market for more good independent restaurants in Tacoma that actually do some cooking.

It would be nice to have jazz return to downtown. Old-time Tacoma jazz fans and musicians can point out where many various jazz joints used to exist and fluorish. Tacoma was home and birthplace to many greats. The closing of Kellys and the continuing passing of many of the great local jazz mucians leaves a huge void. I hope it's real jazz.

They may take a while to work into it. However, I can't imagine starting it if they didn't have connections to alot of performers already.

Update as of this afternoon. Looking good. The place needed some serious painting. The rugs were being replaced as well.

Amazing what a simple paint job can do. The business across the street from Meconis also did a paint job recently, and it looks TONS better.

And now....drum roll please...the sign:

Anyone make it out there last night? Sounds like it could be a promising spot.

by Erik on 4/15/2008 @ 11:00am
From Exit 133:

“Mexican Inspired, Blues Infused”

The new owners will feature blues music and have a Jazz night on Thursdays. The house band is called “The Brown and Blues Band” and will keep the party going on Wednesdays.

They are open for business now but the grand opening party won’t be until Cinco de Mayo…. Ole!

My how times change! The TNT says Hell's Kitchen is heading into the space now:
blog.thenewstribune.com/tacomarockcity/2...

I think it's a good move. I'm sure some of the 6th Ave neighbors will be rejoicing. And it will bring some life into downtown - especially with the exodus happening next year.

Wow, that's great to hear! I never liked HK in it's current spot but would give it another chance down there (depending on the band). Parking at night near and along Pacific there should work out great since it's usually pretty easy that time of day. Plus there's a pay lot right across the street.

Thanks for sharing morgan!

It is too bad this didn't happen sooner, maybe it could have saved Russell.

I wonder...will the HK head banging musical offerings attract downtown's Guy Lombardo demographic?

by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 10/27/2009 @ 9:57am
I have it on very good authority that Lawrence Welk was known to bang a few heads from time to time.
