New Chalk Off Sponsors: Winthrop Hotel & One Store
***New Sponsors***
This Friday 8/8/2008 is Frost Park Chalk Off Episode XVIII at noon at 9th and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma. All are welcome.
There are two prizes for the Chalk Off victor
Prize No. 1: $60 certificate at One Store
The One Store is a Middle Floor Merchant in Sanford and Son.
Diedre Norris from the One Store.
The advertise:
One StoreYard Art, Birdhouses, Chair Flair, Unique & Vintage Chairs, Pillow TYalk, Custom Headboards/Wall Panels and many more unusual, vinatge and quirky home decor items.
743, Suite 221
Tacoma, WA 98402
(253) 779-9927
Prize No. 2: Prominent Window For Art at Winthrop Hotel by LINK Stop
Diedre and the Winthrop Hotel are the sponsors for this prize. Diedre basically manages the space.
It would be nice to offer victor of Frost Park Episode XVIII a free night in the restored penthouse of the Winthrop Hotel: (background of Winthrop)
Spokane has restored the Davenport Hotel after many years. However, the renovation of the Winthrop Hotel is still being worked out along with many other developments in Tacoma.
Here's what Deidre lined up with the Winthrop:
Deidre and the Winthrop Manager showing the display window
The victor in Episode XVIII shall have rights to display their art, for showing and or for sale in this window on the Commerce side of Withrop Hotel adjacent to the LINK station.
The prevailing artist will have exclusive use of the window for two months and can even have art with price tags, contact information, web page address, anything within reason. The only stipulation is that they must include one of Stowe's posters advertising Frost Park in the window.
I like this prize alot as it moves Frost Park advertising into the brick and mortar realm rather than just the internets.
Non Exclusive Idea List For Winthrop Window:
Idea No. 1: Continuously Playing Videos
Example: Elle could show a continual video loop of her chalking victory over RR Anderson in Episode III. "The boy," Elle at the top of her game with her "matrix glasses," could all be shown to thousands of LINK riders and people living, visiting and working in the area.
by jenyum on 8/6/2008 @ 7:06am | This is awesome, especially getting the Winthrop involved. Great job, Eric. |
by KevinFreitas on 8/6/2008 @ 7:17am | Very cool offering this week. Thanks Erik and Diedre! Though Water on Mars didn't garner any voting love last week I'll keep on keepin' on with it in hopes that someday I may have a break through performance. ;) Not holding my breath. |
by FunkomaVintage on 8/6/2008 @ 8:23am | The propriatrix of One is one amazing and awesome gal! The Winthrop manager is also, tho not a gal. I'm so glad you all read my blog. |
by droid116 on 8/6/2008 @ 9:26am | I have not won (yet) and I have no card. BUT, should I prevail, I will premiere my one man show, "guy sitting in a window". |
by jamesstoweart on 8/6/2008 @ 11:12am | Droid 116 has my vote. Can I cast my vote yet? If he wins I'll even join him in the booth. |
by dawntown on 8/6/2008 @ 11:15am | Oh, how I would love to earn that window prize!
Mr Fox Droid, you would be my first installation; "guy sitting in a window, with a drizzle of origami butterflies flying around". Next is the "Flip Book of Frost Park Friday" video I have been anxiously waiting for from KF. If you can take the pictures, I can proly fudge the video in iMovie; maybe some help from our friendly, neighborhood Alien? Got Final Cut? Mandi, word on the streets are you have an spectacular eye for people photography. Hmm, what can we do with that...do you have a portfolio I could look at? Ill show you mine, if you show me yours... I would also love to promote the Garden Co-op for Chickadee. Also, I think it would be cool to have a Mama in Tacoma installation, too, since we have such a fabulous resource at our fingertips. And, yeah, Id like to put some of my stuff in there too, along with FP memorabilia This is my pre-game campaigning |
by NineInchNachos on 8/6/2008 @ 11:20am | Erik may be the keeper of prizes.
but Dawn is a real Treasure. |
by dawntown on 8/6/2008 @ 11:25am | BTW,
You Diedra, you are my Dumpster Hero!!! I don't have to feel ashamed of my compulsions anymore. I have been laughed at for years, and sometimes chided for my "grotesque" collections, that seem to fill every space available. I would be honored to accompany you on one of your Adventures into the Neitherworld of Trash!! This isn't "kissing-up", I really do!!! Just ask Jessica (aka GF in Tacoma, JCBetty), as I couldn't help myself a couple of times last Sunday; the car just pulls over before something in my brain can intervene. |
by Erik on 8/6/2008 @ 11:47am | Very cool offering this week It is one of my favorite of all time because of the potentiality. This is awesome, especially getting the Winthrop involved. They are right next door so its a good dynamic. Frost Park events were birthed online and have moved into the print media some with the Tribune, Volcano and City Arts. This will be a chance to have some brick and mortar presence finally. From what I remember, the windows at the Winthrop had some dead plants in them for years. Now they are cleaned up and Deidre has one of the windows for her shop now. The windows have some lights in them at the top. Now Deidre is working to try to have some of the scary mono color buildings on Commerce painted and brighten up the area. |
by Mandiferous on 8/6/2008 @ 1:14pm | I love taking pictures of people. As I once confided to Cassioposa, I would love to do a Black and White portrait series on Tacoma bloggers. Think the Helm would give me a show? Dawntown, I'd show you mine but I'm too embarrassed. I work for a company that makes awesome websites, yet mine sucks most vigorously. I feel like an oncologist who smokes, or a mechanic with a crappy car. |
by dawntown on 8/6/2008 @ 2:43pm | Hey we are all works in progress. Not like my shit smells like roses, either. But I still would like to see what you got. I can't believe I haven't seen you down at FP taking some awesome pics. AND if you want some space down at the Helm, we need memoriabilia stuff. If you are willing, Id like to utilize your photo eye. Let me know. |
by UnstableArt on 8/6/2008 @ 9:46pm | You go Erik! Thanks for the sponsorship this week, Deidre. Rain or shine (hopefully shine) we should have a healthy turn-out of competitors! |
by UnstableArt on 8/6/2008 @ 9:49pm | Turns out that Laura has some guests from New York who will be jumping into this week's competition. Welcome to the chalk-dusty fray! |
by jcbetty on 8/7/2008 @ 12:21am | KICK ASS!!! Let's spread the fast and furious chalking competition mojo to the big apple!!!
(yep. Dawn's car has a weird sort of auto-pilot for free stuff and garage sales. But she is a woman of steel will. Or is that steel wool???) |
by one store on 8/7/2008 @ 9:56am | Jerry Spencer (Manager of the Winthrop) and myself are getting excited to see who the winner will be.
He said "Hurry up and let's get it filled with some COOL art". Dawn, When I'm off to the Dumpsters and Alleys, I'll give you a call. Send me your number via myspace. I'll ask Alan from Sanford and Son if we can borrow his HUGE van. I'm excited! I almost cause accidents when I see something on the road that I just have to add to my treasures. See you tomorrow at 12:00. |
by one store on 8/31/2008 @ 5:57pm | Today I drove by the Winthrop Window and notice it's still empty.
Any plans to fill it up soon? I can't wait and I know Jerry (Winthrop Manager) is getting anxious. The hours to work on the window is M-F 9-4 Hope to see it looking FAB real soon. |
by Erik on 8/31/2008 @ 6:17pm | Today I drove by the Winthrop Window and notice it's still empty. Me too. This is what it looked like last time I viewed it: ![]() www.flickr.com/photos/tacoma-urbanist/27... |
