New Tacoma City Council Members to Be Sworn in
Tonight, the City of Tacoma will vote to appoint a new mayor...deputy mayor Spiro Manthou.
Having defeated Harold Moss, Spiro Manthou will continue represent
District I. The council is poised to appoint him deputy mayor for 2008. Manthou has a 100 percent voting record on the efforts to restore the Winthrop Hotel.

Having defeated three well known opponents, and garnished 61.12 percent of the votes in the general election, Marilyn Strickland is will take position No. 8, representing the entire city.

In a race involving the only legal contest (involving two other candidates), Lauren Walker will replace Tom Stenger for Position No. 3. (Walker has a good start on Going Local in her district as she is known to enjoy both the Tempest Lounge the Monsoon room).

Julie Anderson received an astounding 80.41 percent of the general vote in the election and will continue to represent the city an at large seat. Showed alot of leadership in the Wall Debate on the Bridge of Glass.
Here are three ways to watch the swearing in.
1) Personally at Tacoma Council Chambers today at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall
2) On TV Tacoma live at 5:00 p.m.and often replayed.
3) Late on Tuesday evening and stored on the city web site for later viewing.
Look for commentary and "visioning" by the mayor and the councilmembers.
Commentary:
A time to celebrate a new group coming in and incumbent members taking the oath for their second term. The Russell Challenge and other issues will likely cut the honeymoon period short, but a honeymoon all the same.
Aside from the litany of actions Tacoma is going to have to take to become competitive, a good deal of keeping Russell in Tacoma may be to simply examine the physical appearance and workings of Tacoma and ask "why would a world class company want to stay in Tacoma?" In the end, much of the answer will reflect the same values that the rest of the residents of Tacoma share.
In addition to the complex policy discussions. the council will certainly have ample opportunities for rudimentary tasks such as cleaning up the Filthy Fifteen and many, many other properties like it which plague the city.
