News Tribune Features Chalk Off and Andrea's Piece

Today, the Frost Park Chalk Off hit the big time.

As many know, the (Tacoma) News Tribune had their photographer come to Frost Park on Friday who interviewed a number of people and took a slew of pictures.

In Episode VIII, after nearly two months, the Frost Park Chalk Off appears to finally have broken into the larger media.

Today, the Tribune featured Andrea "LupinGoddess" Trenbeath Lowen working on her piece with other contestants in the background:

Here's how it looked:

Be sure to pick up a copy of today's News Tribune.

The picture is on the top of the first page of the B section.

Great visibility for Downtown Tacoma, Feed Tacoma, Frost Park Chalk Off Competitions and for Andrea's work (website Unstable Art).

Commentary

Frost Park Chalk Offs started as a single email through the Tacoma Art List Serve.  It then grew through a few blogs, becoming the mainstay of the Tacoma blogosphere, small media, and now the Tribune.

Its great to see this milestone be reached by the cumulative efforts of an uncountable number of artists, downtown enthusiasts, bloggers, sponsors, spectators, and lurkers.  Nice work everyone.

After taking a slew of pictures of the event, the Tribune reporter informed me that  it was completely discretionary with the editors as to which photo they ran or if they would run anything at all.   I had no idea of what to expect.

Andrea's glass blowing chalk piece at Frost Park was apparently the Tribune's favorite and strong enough for them to place it predominantly on 128,000 copies.  Nice work Andrea.  You delivered the final blow.

Perhaps a flood of newcomers will arrive. Perhaps they will come from Seattle.

Oh crap - I have to get me some more charcoal! I think it funny and and ironic that light and color is so much more striking in the presence of darkness.

Well, I was certainly not expecting that. Thanks for the tip off, Erik! I picked up a couple copies of the Tribune. That little snapshot gave some excitement to my otherwise low-key day!

There has to be a Seattle equivalent of that listserve thing that RR used to start this. Think about it... hundreds of Seattle artists open their email one morning, and see:

"ATTENTION COWARDS!"

That above blog post wasn't me BTW. Bizarre. I thought someone had hacked my account.

That's what happens when one signs in on a computer to Feed Tacoma and then forgets to sign out. Oh well. Problem solved though I can't erase comments on my blog.

That is SO great! I’m glad Andrea was featured in that photo. And the worthy mention of feedtacoma. Andrea’s piece was so good, I wanted to pry-up that slab, take it home, and hang it on the wall. But that seemed impractical for several reasons. In addition to the bloodshed, the piece represented a scene that was very Tacoma, and so topical for the week’s prize. Plus, without the inside chalk-off jokes and references, it has such universal appeal. I was thinking about purchasing a piece from untableart.com – I guess I’d better do it soon. Congratulations to all that have made this even happen and develop – Eric, RxR, Kevin, et al…. Anyone else find the hour difficult to manage? I’d like to request a big analog 60minute countdown clock. And regarding comments about keeping it from becoming elitists, some signage and maybe a conspicuous pool of public chalk. Maybe Learning Sprout could assist. But I digress…. It will be interesting to see how this develops in the next few weeks….

Yes. Andrea's piece was the right chalk piece at the right time. It would have been unlikely that that the Tribune would have printed RR Anderson's "Hathaway" on the front of the B section.

BTW, the Tribune photographer of Frost Park last Friday (5/30) for Episode VIII was Drew Perine.

Drew Perine, 45, has been a photojournalist for the past 23 years, covering the ebb and flow of local communities on both coasts.

...

He joined the staff of the News Tribune in 1999 and was named National Press Photographers Association Regional Photographer of the Year in 2002.

Nice work Drew. Welcome to Frost Park.

The TNT has such great photojournalists. I'm not a photographer, so the technical terms escape me, but I like to lurk at their photojournalism blog. It gives one a hint of what goes into that art form, and appreciate it much more.

Oops, too late to fix my typos in my previous comment, i.e. "Congratulations to all that have made this evenT happen, and "unStableart.com" (haha - untableart).

Frost Park is mentioned in today's Volcano:

Around the end of 2007 I compiled a list on the Spew of Top 10 things I’ve Learned in the Year 2007. I think it’s about time I did: Top 10 Things I’ve Learned in the First Half of 2008. Even though I’ve learned approximately 54 things in the first part of 2008, I will spare you the gory details and give you only 10. Plus I am trying not to piss off too many more people as my new “Second Half of 2008” resolution. We’ll see if I manage to stick to that.

1. Apparently the people who attend the Chalk Challenge at Frost Park every Friday at noon are not the target audience that understands what “stay at home moms” are. Yet they are the target audience for understanding toilet bowls, horses, Pinocchio, or anything created by RR Anderson.

understanding ... anything created by RR Anderson.

Yes, we understand some DeRosa, but not everything.
