Prizes of Vise and Drill Await Frost Park Chalk Off Artistic Victor

Today is the weekly chalk off competition at Frost Park located at 9th and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma at noon.

I spent a semester trying to teach Nike-wearin', iPod-swingin' American high schoolers what it meant to live in a consumer culture.  The class began with a simple exercise. I showed slides of twenty plants and trees common in our [TACOMA] neighborhood and asked the kids to name as many as they could.

They stared at me blankly. Then I showed a slide of the alphabet, in which each letter had been lifted from the logo of a common household consumer product. This time, the kids proudly shouted out the brands associated with each letter.

They got nearly all of them right. These kids-and the zeal with which they devoured "American Alphabet" as opposed to, say, the actual landscape around them-seemed alien to me. But the truth is that high school students like these aren't all that different from most Americans. Whether living in cities or suburbs, we're surrounded by logos as well as flora. Yet, we're much more familiar with the former, because that is what our culture emphasizes.

The ads, logos, and other symbols that we encounter thousands of times each day constitute and education of sorts, but it's a hidden form of teaching. Ask most Americans over the age of 12 whether advertising influences their decisions and they'll tell you: "Advertising doesn't affect me. I just ignore it."

Of those kids who identified more brands than fauna, how many can name more artists than beer brands?

How many of them can even name an influential or famous artist?
How many of them even care?

I care, but I'm not exactly a kid anymore either.

Uh-oh, Erik, you posted a few minutes too early. Now this is in yesterday's FeedTacoma list, not today's. :-(

by KevinFreitas on 8/28/2009 @ 6:49am
It's still linked up in the banner. Can't wait to be out there today. See everyone at Frost Park!

by Mark Monlux on 8/28/2009 @ 7:39am
Hoping to make it down today. But, I've got some deadlines I must cover first.

by Nick on 8/28/2009 @ 9:16am
Oooh, always wanted a drill press! Now that's *my* kind of prize! No seriously, I'll be chalking today...

by NineInchNachos on 8/28/2009 @ 9:53am
was there a theme for this week? Mark? Larry?

by Erik on 8/28/2009 @ 10:56am
Thanks Adam!

by L.S.Erhardt on 8/28/2009 @ 10:57am
No theme that I was aware of.

Art Nouveau, anyone?

by KevinFreitas on 8/28/2009 @ 1:39pm
Great work today out there chalkers. Here are my pics of the entries:

by RR Anderson

by Ariel

by Mark Monlux

by Theresa

by Thorax O'Tool

by Adam the Alien

by Brian Bartlebaugh

by unknown (anyone see who did this one?)

Let the voting begin!

by L.S.Erhardt on 8/28/2009 @ 1:59pm
I borrowed a little stylistic influence from Alphonse Mucha on this one.
For anyone wondering, the dimensions ended up being 7'-10" at the widest at the bottom and 11'-5" total height.
Here's the finals, I only went 15 min over!

That being said, I vote for myself this week.

by NEAL on 8/28/2009 @ 2:10pm
It is close between unknown and Monlux for me.

But creative use of a sign wins, unknown gets my vote.

Vote for the future...vote for the unknown.

by L.S.Erhardt on 8/28/2009 @ 2:11pm
one more, for good measure.
I am really proud of how it turned out.

I vote for Thorax, but I have to say, I am impressed with Brian's "Spiderman" and I also have to say, I like Mark Monlux's piece as well.I think you guys have grown quite a bit since I first started voting here.Adam the Alien though, needs a little punching up...sorry. It just seems that the Alien is getting a little boring lately.

by Zanna on 8/28/2009 @ 2:56pm
Mark Monlux’s work is just down-right cool. A little demon is hiding where you all go to do your drawings, you guys better be careful he doesn’t get too lonely and pull you down the hole there.

The use of the sign by unknown is creative and imaginable.

I wish I could see it in person, the huge chalk art is so pretty, long blonde hair is so in! - Thorax my VOTE is for you.

by Erik on 8/28/2009 @ 5:06pm
The unknown artist use of the park is great and almost gets my vote. Mark's piece looks even better online than it did in person.

Thorax wins today and gets my vote.

by ElectricElliot on 8/28/2009 @ 5:23pm
Holy crap. RR gets my vote. F***ing awesome BTD tribute. Just fantastic. Wish I could have been there.

Great entries all around. Monlux is fantastic again along with great entries by Brian and the unknown.

by NineInchNachos on 8/28/2009 @ 5:36pm
I have some great pics I won't be able to upload till late tonight. Mark's had a great 3d effect. stay tuned!

by aslanenlisted on 8/28/2009 @ 5:44pm
I feel compelled to vote for the Alien,
But Brian Bartlebaugh gets my vote as I always swing with spidey!!! double entendres for the win???

by Adam the Alien on 8/28/2009 @ 5:44pm
It just seems that the Alien is getting a little boring lately.
Adam is out of Prang in most colors, and is discovering that the Crayola bright chalk can't pick up the slack. Must devise new strategies.

My vote goes to Thorax...as lovely as all the pieces are, his work was more ambitious than ever this week. And he pulled it off wonderfully.

by kaotix on 8/28/2009 @ 5:46pm
I vote for Thorax.

by Adam the Alien on 8/28/2009 @ 5:50pm
If anyone's able to, I sure hope someone can go snap a picture of Brian's finished piece. It got even better after everyone left, and he was still working when I left.

by Earthdaughter on 8/28/2009 @ 6:33pm
Unknown is a tall guy who has been at many chalk-offs. He usually swings by and takes photos but hasn't chalked before to my knowledge. We tried to get him to sign the piece but he didn't. Also, I've asked his name before but he won't tell me. He's probably in some of the previous photos of bystanders. I'll take a look.

Hard vote this week. Once I "got" it, I like Adam's piece. The reflection of himself in the eye of the Alien! Thorax's is beautiful and way ambitious for one hour. Spidey is cool and was too much for one hour also.

But I have to go with Monlux for the depth perception. It really works. So my vote is for Monlux's demon.

by Heatherrebel on 8/28/2009 @ 7:31pm
I vote by absentee ballot from NYC for Thorax's Damsel in Distress.

by Mandiferous on 8/28/2009 @ 7:54pm
Voting for Monlux.

by Tataddict on 8/28/2009 @ 8:38pm
My Vote is For Brian....I Luv Spiderman

by Tat2Fan on 8/28/2009 @ 8:41pm
If I don't Vote for Spiderman My 10 Year old will not be happy... I do believe that it was a close race foe a few this time but my vote is for Brian

by JoesGal on 8/28/2009 @ 8:50pm
Unknown, you would have had my vote....but we don't know who u r? So my vote is for Brian

by ICESK8R on 8/28/2009 @ 9:06pm
My Vote is for Brian

by Mark Monlux on 8/28/2009 @ 10:27pm
I vote for the little guy in the hole saying "Hello."
Yes, voting for myself might be marcissistic, but I do love my work.

by Libby on 8/28/2009 @ 10:32pm
I'm voting for Adam and the infinite alien.

by KevinFreitas on 8/28/2009 @ 10:32pm
Great work out there everyone!

Love the BTG tribute by RR. Welcome to newcomer Theresa -- it was great talking Big Island with you! Can't wait to see what you draw in the coming weeks. Brilliant work on the wall Brian! Cool perspective on the Alien, Adam, but it certainly would be fun for you to shock us with something completely different. That being said, you truly come up with a different perspective on your alter ego nearly every time so cheers to that! Thorax your work was just tender and lovely this week and Mark's just had a great sinister feel to it. Crap, this ain't easy...

In a *very*, very close match I gotta vote Thorax this week. The simplicity and heart-felt beauty just tugged at me. Kill 3D work though Mark. I really hope you keep exploring this avenue!

by SheLives on 8/28/2009 @ 10:44pm
Whatever happened to the one hour deadline? Isn't that part of the challenge?

While I admire RR's tribute chalk, I have to cast my vote for Monlux. Love the cracks.

by KevinFreitas on 8/28/2009 @ 11:05pm
@She: I'm staying pretty true to the 1pm cutoff as you can tell by the unfinished chalk work in some of my pics. It's good to have limits! Er something.

Drove by at 6 am on my way home from work... all gone! Everything washed away by the rain.

It was sad, but at least it'll be a f'real clean slate next week.
