See Tacoma's Artists Compete By Chalking Downtown at Noon; Master Cartoonist Mark Monlux Offers A Fab Prize
Today is the weekly chalk off competition at Frost Park located at 9th and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma at noon.
In these difficult times, let the words of RR Anderson below inspire you:
THE RETURN OF FROST PARK FRIDAY LUNCH CHALK CHALLENGE...
12 noon - 1 pm
No, God could not create a burrito so big even he couldn't finish eating it.
That act
would be meaningless and contradictory to his nature. First,
transcendent beings don't have appetites. Second, it's not in God's
nature to contradict himself. That would be an imperfection. A perfect
being, God, cannot act imperfectly. If he did then he's not really God.
It's possible that the things I write about are pure insanity, but
how would you know? What is your reference point? If you have no
reference point, that is, if you think that everything is relative,
then I'm sorry to say that you are trapped in an existential neurosis.
There is, however, a way out of such absurdity. But you can't just
rationalize your way out. You have to act your way out.
I suggest that you start by helping your neighbor. Maybe tomorrow you
could go next door and sweep your neighbor's sidewalk. Try it. Let me
know if you've experienced the pure joy of having a purpose and
destiny. Take the existential leap of faith my friend and feel the
exhilaration and freedom of knowing that God will catch you if you fall!~ Mofo from the Hood, on the self-existent uncaused eternal burrito

by Erik on 9/11/2009 @ 1:08am | Thanks Mark for offering such a great prize for the winner. I sure hope more photographers show up this week. Last week, I had to go back to the park in the rain with my cell phone and take pictures just like old times. Yet, it was worth it. Kevin's new Feed Tacoma features allow one to promote Frost Park chalking via Facebook and Twitter. Give it a shot. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/11/2009 @ 7:16am | I can't be there right at noon but will come back for the tail end to say hi and snap pics. Should be a stunning day to be chalking and/or spectating! |
by NineInchNachos on 9/11/2009 @ 8:18am | the anderson family will be there in force |
by Mofo from the Hood on 9/11/2009 @ 9:36am | A message of grace and peace from MFTH:
Brethen, I trust that you are well. As we prepare for the coming of Frost Park Chalk Challenge #24 let's look to today's event E-poster and to the wisdom of the past. It would be unthinkable to ancient Greek philosophers that salvation would take on the body of Kenny Rogers or Kenny Loggins. How could True salvation be both infinite and finite? In the battle for chalk art prizes as in the battle for our minds, how does man live a life that is pleasing to a self-existent uncaused eternal Burrito? Revelation is an event that takes place at Frost Park. Chalk art points beyond itself to the Revelation. Experience Truth as encounter. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/11/2009 @ 11:28am | Bonus points to anyone getting Russell related visuals in their work today. See y'all soon! |
by Adam the Alien on 9/11/2009 @ 11:36am | I'm either going to be late or not in attendance. Didn't sleep well last night. If anyone reads this before getting there or while there, the free chalk is tucked away near Brian's eagle drawing on the Pacific side. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/11/2009 @ 2:18pm | Here are chalk pics from this noon time down at Frost Park:

by Spork And an honorable mention (but not vote elegible because he did it during non-chalk off hours) is this piece by Brian Bartlebaugh: ![]() |
by NineInchNachos on 9/11/2009 @ 2:19pm | Adam the Alien has a hidden cache of frost park chalk? Awesome! |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/11/2009 @ 2:27pm | I like the Ruck Fussell, but I am still burned out on that. The eagle is slick, woulds been cooler if I had remembered that today was 9-11. Gotta go for the Michelin Man... oops, I mean Poppin' Fresh... oops, Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. I vote for me. But imagine that dogs playing poker painting... except with the aforementioned puffy white mascots. Interesting idea... ![]() |

Happy 9-11 Day!

by Thorax O'Tool on 9/11/2009 @ 2:59pm | RR, shoulda done the F. Russell in spray paint. It's a little longer lasting. |
by NineInchNachos on 9/11/2009 @ 3:11pm | vertical should last OK

by Thorax O'Tool on 9/11/2009 @ 3:13pm | Woulda been fun to go to that.
Too bad these things always seem to happen on days I work. |
by Mofo from the Hood on 9/11/2009 @ 3:16pm | How come the Stay Puft daddy is wearing Donald Duck's outerwear? |
by Erik on 9/11/2009 @ 4:07pm | Nice entries. Great eagle Brian. Maybe The Rulz should be changed for you. |
by droid116 on 9/11/2009 @ 4:28pm | Beautiful day at the park today. Sorry I couldn't stay but for a few minutes. I vote for the Russell entry. |
by Erik on 9/11/2009 @ 4:32pm | I vote for Mark Monlux |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/11/2009 @ 5:04pm | @ Mofo... I'd actually question why Donald the Duck wears the Stay Puft Daddy's outerwear. Regardless, I think I got it pretty good.![]() |
![]() by Zanna on 9/11/2009 @ 5:12pm | If there's something strange in your neighborhood Who ya gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS
If there's something weird and it don't look good Who ya gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS (I vote for Thorax) |
by NineInchNachos on 9/11/2009 @ 6:26pm | I vote for thorax's new avatar! |
by boearc on 9/11/2009 @ 6:32pm | Thorax get my vote - it just makes me feel all warm and squishy at the end of a tough week. |
by jamesstoweart on 9/11/2009 @ 6:36pm | I also vote for Thorax's Mr. Stay-Puft. I am a sucker for marshmallow apocalypses. |
by Mark Monlux on 9/11/2009 @ 7:23pm | I like how the Stay-Puff looked before the star was added. As an icon by himself I thought he was more powerful.
I found RR's art to be up to his regularly high standards of whimsy swirled with social commentary. But Elliot's was the best art this week. And I'm not just saying that because he gave me a lift to the event. The whole theme of suits wearing masks and actually being aliens got me thinking about some of my favorite sci-fi flicks and shows. "They Live" and "V" popped right into my head. And I could just see this art popping up in the background of either of those shows. And that unintended trip back to when I watched and enjoyed schlocky sci-fi in the late 80s was a very pleasant journey. Elliot gets my vote. |
by NineInchNachos on 9/11/2009 @ 8:02pm | They Live should be required frost park chalkie viewing. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/11/2009 @ 8:12pm | ![]() |
![]() by TacomaGnome on 9/11/2009 @ 8:33pm | My vote shall be tallied for Mr. O'Tool.
Thank you kind vote meisters. |
by KevinFreitas on 9/11/2009 @ 10:00pm | Great advice pieces by Thorax and Elliot. But, and mostly since I thought at first he brought some larger-than-life-that-might-get-us-shut-down profanity to Frost Park, I vote RR for his great RU to Fussell. Beautiful work to you as well Mr. Bartlebaugh! |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/11/2009 @ 10:20pm | What would it take to get us shut down, and what exactly is deemed acceptable? **NOTE** I AM NOT trying to offend the sensibilities of our Fearless Leaders at 747 Market and get chalking made illegal, but I do wonder what the unspoken-rules actually are. Sure, no profanity or sex or violence... that's pretty much a given. But where is the "line"? |
by ElectricElliot on 9/11/2009 @ 10:25pm | Gotta vote Ruck Fussell. I vote RR, though I'm impressed with the perfection of Thorax's Stay Puff. |
by Libby on 9/11/2009 @ 10:29pm | RR for me... it was fun to watch the parade of Russell employees taking pictures as the afternoon progressed... |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/11/2009 @ 10:46pm | "...though I'm impressed with the perfection of Thorax's Stay Puff"
Thanks for the compliment! |
by jenyum on 9/11/2009 @ 11:08pm | Oh, this is tough. I am such a big Stay Puft fan. But I have to go with the timeliness of RR's contribution.
I vote RR. |
by Adam the Alien on 9/11/2009 @ 11:12pm | All lovely pieces, and I was lucky enough to get to watch Brian finishing his piece up last night. His chalking method is more akin to painting than most of the methods I've seen used at Frost Park.
But my vote, ultimately, has to go to Mark's lovely tribute to Beautiful Angle's SIT IN event/theme. Taping chair shadows yesterday was a great deal of fun. There'll be a video up soon. |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 9/11/2009 @ 11:54pm | My vote goes to RR and his 911 tribute to the international financial district |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/12/2009 @ 12:25am | My 12:22 am count: TO'T: 6 RR: 6 Mark: 2 Elliott: 1 Looks like another tie! |
by Erik on 9/12/2009 @ 12:41am | Oh no.
This could be the very first truly tied Frost Park chalk off competition. It doesn't look like any of the votes were made by ambiguous voting, duplicative avatars, spouses of Feed Tacoma members or untimely votes. Yes, the beanie hat is an important prize. Yet another issue is who gets credit for winning this episode as they will count for the season total. I suppose the points for the episode will be split evenly. Yet, how does one split a beanie hat? |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/12/2009 @ 12:41am | Do a Solomon on it. |
by NineInchNachos on 9/12/2009 @ 7:53am | Flip a coin?
This hat is enchanted with powers of stealth as it comes directly from Mark Monlux's trans-dimensional wife. It may come in handy for your stealthy bus stop art installations Mr. Thorax. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/12/2009 @ 9:55am | hmmmm...... indeed, I do see a possibility. Could have Mark flip a coin next week. |
by narndt on 9/12/2009 @ 10:17am | Did RR add the "Ruck Fussell" before or after chalking the Russell HQ? If the answer is after, I wonder how many Russell folks walked by while the building was going up and thought "Oh that's cute, they're chalking us a tribute!" |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/12/2009 @ 12:12pm | It was there from the beginning.
Anyone from Russell who walked by would certainly have seen it. |
by Mark Monlux on 9/12/2009 @ 12:43pm | In case of a tie I thought we might go to the sponsor and ask them. My dear sweet - and completely existent - wife, the sponsor of this week's prize (not me), did not vote last night. And while I lobbied for RR, she says her deciding vote this morning would be for Thorax. How does that sit with everyone? |
by Erik on 9/12/2009 @ 3:34pm | How does that sit with everyone?
Although your wife cannot cast a vote without an avatar, being the sponsor and the tie breaker, perhaps that is enough to tip the contest enough toward Thorax. Fine by me. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/12/2009 @ 4:12pm | Since your totally existent wife is the official sponsor, I'll go with what she decides. |
by NineInchNachos on 9/12/2009 @ 4:53pm | so be it! Thorax is the winner of this fine hat! |
by NineInchNachos on 9/12/2009 @ 4:54pm | also folks were honking and yelling "yeah!" at me after I added the caption :) |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/12/2009 @ 7:02pm | RR, you make a T-Shirt of that and you'll make bank.
And I'll trade you for one of my carbon footprint T-shirts |
by Erik on 9/12/2009 @ 9:14pm | Congrats RR and Thorax O'Tool OTW! |
by NineInchNachos on 9/14/2009 @ 9:19am | Thank you to the results-oriented citizen who scrubbed the offensive 'ruck fussell' bits off my russell chalk art.
You're doing your part to keep Tacoma SAFE AND CLEAN. God Bless! |
by Thorax O'Tool on 9/14/2009 @ 9:57am | Chalk it back on. |
