Starving Chalk Artists To Battle For 2 Large PSP Pizzas Today at Frost Park

Today is the weekly chalk off competition at Frost Park located at 9th and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma at noon.

I've been a soldier and a slave. I've seen my comrades fall in battle or die more slowly under the lash in Africa. I've held them in my arms at the final moment.

These were men who saw life as it is, yet they died despairing. No glory, no brave last words, only their eyes, filled with confusion, questioning "Why?" I don't think they were wondering why they were dying, but why they had ever lived.

When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? To surrender dreams - -this may be madness; to seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be madness! But maddest of all - -to see life as it is and not as it should be..

I Vote Stowe/Pizza.

by Erik on 8/7/2009 @ 1:42pm
Great turnout today.

Yes Stowe had a powerful colorful piece.

by jamesstoweart on 8/7/2009 @ 1:43pm
I wanna vote for my pizza too. I was having a frustrating morning and drawing that pizza with my kids and all the audience participation really turned it around. This one was one of my favorite chalk pieces I've done in a long time. I forgot how much I enjoyed drawing stuff on the fly that passers by suggest. Thanks everyone for the topping suggestions. Who new Obama, salami, plutonium, ponies, ninjas, mushrooms and zombies would go so well on a pizza together. Can't wait to see a picture of it.

by sillypunk on 8/7/2009 @ 1:58pm
i vote for zombie/obama/plutonium/ninja pizza!

While I appreciate rainbows as much as the next guy, I'm so damn burned out on politics that it makes me ill.

However in true fashion, I vote for me because the Egyptian theme is EPIC. Anything with hieroglyphs is awesome!

Thorax's piece is awesome...so I'm voting for Thorax!

by Altered Chords on 8/7/2009 @ 2:33pm
I envision Thorax spending hours researching before chalking. This piece was very interesting.

I vote for Thorax.

by Zanna on 8/7/2009 @ 2:46pm
I vote for Thorax - love the drawing!

by jenyum on 8/7/2009 @ 2:47pm
I think I gotta go with Thorax this week, too. Although I love RR and Stowe's.

I vote for the Rabbit on the dragon (Adam & Cory)

by kaotix on 8/7/2009 @ 3:19pm
I vote for Stowe. Major kudos to Thorax's semblance of a star gate.
And a shout out to the Garfield Kid for coolness and Alien Adam for trying foreshortening...brave.

by NineInchNachos on 8/7/2009 @ 3:33pm
the crazy details on thorax piece reminds me of Joe Coleman.. www.joecoleman.com/

did anybody get a good shot of my unicorn under the train overpass?

by L.S.Erhardt on 8/7/2009 @ 3:57pm
"Major kudos to Thorax's semblance of a star gate."

Not the first one of those comments I've heard today. Maybe I should go and rent the movie so I know what people are talking about.

by thecokeman on 8/7/2009 @ 4:03pm
cool job brian I vote for brian these are all go pictures from everyone but i'm still voting for brian

by Erik on 8/7/2009 @ 4:25pm
Thorax and Brian has strong pieces but Stowe's colors take the day.

I vote Stowe!

by MarkMonlux on 8/7/2009 @ 4:35pm
I vote for Adam the Alien because he bought my vo,... um, postcards. He bought my postcards. Yeah! That's it. And the Dude needs to eat more. Have you ever lifted him up? Boy, is he light. Like he's filled with helium or somethin'. It's like he's living on wheat thins Kool-Aid. We need to fill the boy up with heavy lactose, preserved meats and put some meat on his bones.

by Altered Chords on 8/7/2009 @ 4:40pm
Thorax - Stargate was a dumb movie. Go see Startrek. It was well done. You can probably still see it at the Blue Mouse on Proctor.

by dawntown on 8/7/2009 @ 4:59pm
Awesomeness splattered everywhere! Tough call, TO'T or Stowe? BTW, I DID see the unicorn under the fabled train overpass, you funnyman, RXR

by MamaLynn on 8/7/2009 @ 5:00pm
Gotta go with Stowe. Jumps off the sidewalk.

by L.S.Erhardt on 8/7/2009 @ 5:24pm
"Tough call, TO'T or Stowe?"
When in doubt, follow your gut!
Which of these two is less likely to give you indigestion?

1) The Sun, scarab & hieroglyphs
2) An XL pizza with everything including Obamachovies?

by ALT on 8/7/2009 @ 5:37pm
I really like Stowe's supreme zombie and pineapple pizza, but I've got to vote for Brian's mean Skull. Its grinning rictus of Technicolor chalk is quite fantastic.

by Erik on 8/7/2009 @ 6:01pm

Sad. But a possible theme for next week:

Dead Whale On Bow Of Container Ship In Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. -- A dead whale was caught on the bow of a container ship coming into the Port of Tacoma Friday morning, said the National Marine Fisheries Service.

The whale was spotted in the Blair Waterway just before 6 a.m. Friday.

NMFS spokesman, Brian Gorman, said the whale is a calf, possibly a sei or fin whale, 20 to 30 feet in length.

by Courtney on 8/7/2009 @ 6:20pm
I vote for Stowe and his crazy pizza although I really liked Thorax's and the Tacoma chalk one too.

by pietogo on 8/7/2009 @ 6:55pm

Dead Whale On Bow Of Container Ship In Tacoma

I would REALLY like to see an RR interpretation of this theme idea, seriously, give it some thought RR.

This was an unusually good Friday for eye-popping chalk art, amazing stuff.

by Bjr on 8/7/2009 @ 8:02pm
I think I need to vote twice for myself, because Thorax is kicken butt. Hopefully i can get some crust frim that Pizza too... But My Vote is for me Brian.

The stakes are high.

Vote counters get ready. Only 3 hours and 6 minutes left.

by Beth on 8/7/2009 @ 9:06pm
I vote for Adam The Alien.

by jamesstoweart on 8/7/2009 @ 9:12pm
In a bald faced attempt to drum up my votes I would like to specify that the majority of my chalk piece is both A.) spontaneous generated using random audience participation and B.) drawn by me completely upside-down (since I was clearly not planning things correctly and drew the pizza crust and applied the words before I started adding the toppings).

Also, I had to fight the artistic inclinations of a 3 year old that insisted that pizza crust be pink and that mozzarella cheese be rendered in blue (and she took it upon herself to grab the chalk on numerous occations to show me so).

And further more... I am hosting a reunion with some out of town friends next weekend and two pizzas would sure help feed a bunch of travelers.

In finishing a vote for Stowe is not a vote for Thorax or Brian.

Now where are the babies and open palms... I got more campaignin' to do.

by Earthdaughter on 8/7/2009 @ 9:35pm
First I acknowledge my chagrin as a recovering proofreader for misspelling cellist (Chellist?! Sheesh!) Guess someone else wanted to get some recognition (HELL!).

That being said, this week is a very hard call. You folks take my breath away with your talent and imagination. Love the cabin and unicorn, RR. Definite new slogan for DIRT - "If you build it (post and beam), they (unicorns) will come!" Thorax, you obviously prepare thoroughly ahead of time and I love the imagery. The dragon was fantastic. But I so enjoy Stowe's interactive art pieces and his comment on the healing nature of this work, that he gets my vote this week. I do think, though, that you need to try to order that pizza when/if you win this one!

While I'm thinking pizza, I think we really should celebrate this community sometime with a pizza party at PSP. Maybe after the event some week. Whatcha think, Chalkies?

by KevinFreitas on 8/7/2009 @ 9:48pm
I gotta vote Stowe because I'm a huge fan of audience participation. Brian thrilled with those chalk teeth and I love RR's utopian rail portrait. Thorax's was solid and it was cool to marvel at Joel's return was fun to marvel at mispelling and all. Great work everyone!

by ensie on 8/7/2009 @ 10:21pm

by Frinklin on 8/7/2009 @ 10:23pm
Man, some great stuff today. It's been too long since I've voted. I have to go with RR's train.

by NineInchNachos on 8/7/2009 @ 10:49pm
I vote for Adam Botsford in protest of his refusal to use the black community charcoal provided by me at great personal expense.

I'm tellin ya guys if you'd use black outlines it would make your dragon fly off that concrete and really look snappy for the camera. A simple drop shadow would make your dragon burst into 3D!

Don't be like Mark Monlux and think you're special just because you refuse to use black.

by KevinFreitas on 8/7/2009 @ 10:53pm
I dunno -- I really really liked seeing the orange outline of their dragon. Made for a completely different feel to the edges. Black is fine but I really loved their break from convention.

by NineInchNachos on 8/7/2009 @ 10:56pm

by BodyGuard55 on 8/7/2009 @ 10:57pm
I vote for Uncle Brian.....Go Brian Go Brian go go go Brian

by Gini Ruth on 8/7/2009 @ 11:01pm
I vote for Rabbit on Dragon. However the frog made me smile. See I actually voted.

by ZenNerd on 8/7/2009 @ 11:09pm
Stowe's Pizza. Pizza Good. Obama bad. Pizza good.

by Dianne on 8/7/2009 @ 11:11pm
I vote for Jeremy and Garfield brand ice cream. His picture started out as just the ice cream but (apparently inspired by Stowe) added an ice cream-scarfing ice cream monster.

by crockawaddy on 8/7/2009 @ 11:15pm
Blame it on bad blood, but I vote for the alien who is named Adam (but it was a close call with Frost Park Pizza - yum!)

by JoesGal on 8/7/2009 @ 11:15pm
Very Nice thing that is going on here.. But I am partial to INK and SKULLS My vote is for Brian

by NineInchNachos on 8/7/2009 @ 11:25pm
better unicorn pic...

by NineInchNachos on 8/7/2009 @ 11:28pm
see? people who want the berm would rather kill this poor unicorn and destroy the integrity of Job Carr's cabin (where the unicorn lives).

by aslanenlisted on 8/7/2009 @ 11:30pm
I vote for the alien... Adam the alien... but the grammar nazi in me wants to point out the miss spelling of cellist

by Beverly Queery on 8/7/2009 @ 11:30pm
methinks Stowe.

by Where the World Spins on 8/7/2009 @ 11:41pm
I vote Stowe! Wow on the colors!

by Earthdaughter on 8/7/2009 @ 11:49pm
Hey, aslanenlisted! I already fessed up to the misspelling (yes, it was a Miss spelling) of cellist. Check previous post!

Hey, Brian, if you read all these posts, I forgot to get your prize from last week taken care of. India Majal didn't give me a gift certificate. What I'll do is give them your name and then you just mention my name (Patricia) when you go in. They have my card as the Chalk-Off rep for last week. Did that make sense? I'll tell them tomorrow. Sorry I forgot to do that today. Enjoy!

by Gexydaf on 8/7/2009 @ 11:49pm
Adam the Alien!

by Earthdaughter on 8/7/2009 @ 11:51pm
Gexydaf you gots to say "vote" in your post for it to count!!!! Post again fast!!!

by Adam the Alien on 8/7/2009 @ 11:55pm
Though I probably can't compete with the mighty armies of Stowe and Brian, I must vote for myself. Not just because my stomach demands that I feed it something, but also because this is the first time I've really played with perspective, like this, in a chalk piece. Hopefully not the last time, either.

If I were inclined to go with someone else, I would've gone with the other Adam, as that dragon does manage to pop off the cement remarkably well without the use of the blacks we so love. Unfortunately, the lack of my beloved black (black doesn't have to mean outlines, after all) does also prejudice me against it and more toward myself.

Stowe, your piece is marvelous...but haven't you won enough? :-D :-P

Seriously, you are crazy talented and I love your community pieces...but I always feel like Doctor Claw around you (ironic, is it not?).

"I'll get you next time, Stowe...NEEEEXT TIIIIIIIIIME!"

by Erik on 8/8/2009 @ 2:26am
Gexydaf you gots to say "vote" in your post for it to count!!!! Post again fast!!!

So right Daughter of the Earth. Many people think of a great many pieces, but whether they vote for a submission is a different issue all together.

It is far to late for me to count up the votes.

I am sure someone bright and early Saturday will do so. The anticipation!

by Adam the Alien on 8/8/2009 @ 2:44am
My video from today's chalk-off is up on YouTube:

Backstory: Vlogtag, the collaborative channel I'm in, has something called Challenge Fridays. Members of Vlogtag are randomly picked the week before and challenged to do something. My challenge, today, was to "do something creative". Heh. What a convenient challenge, eh?

by KevinFreitas on 8/8/2009 @ 7:37am
Here's how the votes counted up:

Stowe: 16
Brian: 12
Adam the Alien: 7
Thorax: 5
Adam & Cory: 3
Jeremy: 1
Jim & Patricia: 1
RR Anderson: 1

Stowe for PSP pizza win! The competition was fierce with voting army's pushing Brian and Adam the Alien's votes up admirably. There was solid total 46 votes cast this week. Well done everyone and see you next week!

by jenyum on 8/8/2009 @ 8:06am
Totally missed the Job Carr Cabin/Unicorn the first time I looked at it. I want that on a t-shirt.

by NineInchNachos on 8/8/2009 @ 8:31am
that's a fun video Mr. Alien

by Joel 413 on 8/8/2009 @ 8:38am
Using intention, my vote count matches KF's exactly. I don't want to go back and count dangling chads.

by JoesGal on 8/8/2009 @ 10:26am
ummm UPDATE... If you go by the rules of stating the word vote... Kevin your totals are wrong! Stowe only had "11" state they vote for him.... Brian on the other hand has "12".... Your winner is BRIAN!!

by jamesstoweart on 8/8/2009 @ 12:53pm
Iiiinnnnnttteresting UPDATE. Before this has a chance to devolve into a full on internet rules debate... if the actual worded rule is that for a vote to count the words 'I vote' need to be present then 5 of the people that voted for me didn't actually vote for me. So, if that rule stands I support Brian winning it. I love the art and the compitition as much as everyone, but I don't want to argue over a free pizza about it. I got to meet Brian yesterday. He was a cool dude, and I dig his art. If he wins based on the word of law of the rules I am okay with that.

by NineInchNachos on 8/8/2009 @ 4:08pm
VERILY an interesting development!

16 to 12 is very close call and certainly warrants scrutiny when not one but TWO PUGET SOUND PIZZAS are at risk of being won or lost.

If my history is correct the obscure 'I vote' rule was enacted by the elders of Frost Park to help clarify ambiguous votes such as the: "I like..."

or one word "Joe Somebody"

or the perplexing rambling of many noteworthy entries without a clear pick of your favorite.

I would be interested in the opinion of our resident ATTORNEY AT LAW, mr. TACOMA URBANIST. Should the I vote rule stand?

Do we need an obama-style beer summit between Brian and Stowe?

by JoesGal on 8/8/2009 @ 8:37pm
I'm just going by Erik and Earthdaughters earlier posts. All the art is amazing.....I admire all of you.....

by Adam the Alien on 8/8/2009 @ 9:34pm
Interesting...I believe this may be the first time the Intentional Vote has really disagreed with the Legal Vote. Normally it's just an issue of how close the race is, or MAYBE who got second, rather than who comes out on top.

by Erik on 8/8/2009 @ 9:51pm
ummm UPDATE... If you go by the rules of stating the word vote... Kevin your totals are wrong! Stowe only had "11" state they vote for him.... Brian on the other hand has "12".... Your winner is BRIAN!!

Assuming the vote count is correct that was made by JoesGal, Brian got more votes.

If my history is correct the obscure 'I vote' rule was enacted by the elders of Frost Park to help clarify ambiguous votes such as the: "I like..."

There are a lot of art work and artists that people like and who receive shout outs by folks saying how much they like them or their art.

However, its another thing to believe and publicly state that they like the artists work the best of all of the entries enough to cast a vote for it.

Thus, IMO Brian wins, especially since Stowe was the Greatest Artist in the Universe of Tacoma for 2008.

Do we need an obama-style beer summit between Brian and Stowe?

Yes, ultimately, perhaps Stowe and Brian need to determine who won between them.

by KevinFreitas on 8/8/2009 @ 10:41pm
Electoral college or popular vote. ;) Hmm... I very intentionally counted votes where the intention of their vote was crystal clear. I don't mind the "vote" text rule but, much like the chalk off itself, this is an organic process growing and changing all the time.

Many non-"vote" voters are new to FeedTacoma and I want them to feel encouraged to join this community not discouraged by rules they didn't read in a long post somewhere at the top of the page. Perhaps at some point I'll employ a one-vote poll setup but am even weary of that because then the wonderful discussion that goes along with voting would disappear.

by KevinFreitas on 8/8/2009 @ 10:42pm
(or perhaps they could get one pizza each)

by MamaLynn on 8/9/2009 @ 1:06am
Hate to tell you Kevin, but I'm very discouraged from coming back. I read the whole long post at the top and there isn't a single thing which states the rules. Now I understand if you want to call house rules, but if you aren't going to explain, how do expect people to play? Glad to know my vote didn't count. Peace.

by Tat2Fan on 8/9/2009 @ 1:23am
I bet they Share the Pizza with all of you,,, You are all Wonderful Artist.....BTW where is this pizza joint,, it looks yummy!!!

by Courtney on 8/9/2009 @ 7:57am
I think there's a general feeling in the Stowe household (of which I'm a member) that the win should go to Brian. This is a fun community driven event that Stowe absolutely loves being part of. Yeah he's competitive and likes to win but doesn't want to turn this whole thing into a semantics argument. So chalk up one win for Brian and give the man his pizzas!

But I do agree with Lynn that the rules are not clearly stated in this particular post so perhaps those can be included with every Frost Park post so as not to confuse the voters.

by NineInchNachos on 8/9/2009 @ 8:54am
ultimately it is a sad thing when somebody's comment clearly picks their vote but without using the word 'vote'

- I pick _____
- I'm for ______
- _____ for the win
- I'm going with _____ this week

in my opinion are all variations of a valid vote.

Ultimately we'd solve this with a CHALK DRAW SUDDEN DEATH!

by Altered Chords on 8/9/2009 @ 9:45am
I vote for requiring the words "I vote for" when casting a vote and expecting it to count.

I vote for a beer summit of any sort for all occasions.

In addttion to Frost Park, I also went to ....Tollefson Plaza .... Friday at lunch time.

I vote for Frost Park. Sorry Tollefson.

MamaLynne. Please do not be discouraged. Even political subdivisions like Iran, Washington State and the great U. S. and A. have election disputes.

by Sto'sZombieCaptain on 8/9/2009 @ 10:27am
I didnt vote but I wanted to state something about this voting debacle.

If you want this event to grow and thus bring in new people you need to be new person friendly. There is no ruling on this page that states you need to include the "I vote" semantic. Also the rationalization of "If my history is correct the obscure 'I vote' rule was enacted by the elders of Frost Park to help clarify ambiguous votes such as the: "I like..." doesnt work in this case as there is no confusion on who these people voted for as atleast 3 stowe votes do not even talk about the other works or competitors.

In reality this page (which is the page tied to this event) simply asks the user:

Please vote for your favorite chalk art entry in the comment section below. Explaining why you voted for a particular entry may add more meaning.

Each person/avatar gets one vote. Votes will be accepted until midnight on Friday after which the winner will be declared. Votes will be accepted starting at 1:00 p.m."

The following posts are direct responses to that. Within context someone responding "Brian!" or "I like Stowes the best" is more than enough to confirm.

I do get the concept of it can get muddy when someone is rambling or commenting on everyones... would the nice thing be to ask "Hey Bill, who do you actually vote for?" instead of implementing an obscure rule that isnt even listed on the ballot?

Finally, I think that altered chords has brought up a good point about all of this. Dont you think its a bit silly that a friendly competition between local artists for 2 large pizzas decays into an election dispute? This isnt a national vote. This isnt something meant to be anything else but fun and playing the "I vote" card and eliminating peoples votes pretty much undermines fun and makes it something less.

Congrats to Brian, I liked your piece a lot. I think that those planning this need to consider how to move forward as this ruling stuff is a mess.

by Tat2Fan on 8/9/2009 @ 12:31pm
WOW I can't believe this has gotten so outta hand! DRAW,CREATE, EXPRESS YOURSELF!! HAVE FUN...
and let them eat cake! (Or Pizza) lol

You are all Fabulous Artist.... I Vote for all of you.......

all for one and one for all!!!

No Hard Feelings

Bottoms up

See how silly this all is....

Kudos to all that plan and attend........

On to next week.......

by jenyum on 8/9/2009 @ 3:05pm
This is all very silly. Although I guess I didn't officially vote this week either since I said "I think I gotta go with Thorax this week." Fortunately, Stowe and Brian seem to have worked it out so it matters not.

by KevinFreitas on 8/9/2009 @ 3:13pm
@MamaLynn: Apologies, usually that "vote" is up there but with or without it I counted all the intended votes above including yours. Sure, it'd be clearest to use the word "vote" but, as long as I'm doing the counting if it's clear who you're voting for I'll count it.

Cheers to Stowe and Brian and I totally think they should combine chalk forces soon! Thx all for dropping by to see the art in action and for voting for your fav.

by Erik on 8/9/2009 @ 4:50pm
Interesting...I believe this may be the first time the Intentional Vote has really disagreed with the Legal Vote.

Yes, seeing the votes come through every week, I have always been relieved that the disputed/ambiguous votes never have been big enough to make a difference in the final outcome.

Thanks Adam for making a video in May showing how to vote at Frost Park:

Adam The Alien Explains How to Cast a Valid Vote at a Frost Park Chalk Off

The technique required to cast a valid vote in a chalk off, is another subject completely, and is described by Adam the Alien in this U tube post (starting at 00:50) in five simple steps. Watch carefully. Its all there.

Also, please see the Official Rule Book for Frost Park Chalk Contests (issued before Adam's amendment):

Ultimately we'd solve this with a CHALK DRAW SUDDEN DEATH!

Hmm. That would be interesting although, the matter looks like it has been worked out.

by Adam the Alien on 8/10/2009 @ 6:27pm
Adam's amendment

Not my amendment - I just described it. To be honest, I've always felt it had potential for this sort of confusion, but the "you must use the word VOTE" thing was officially added sometime last year, after we had some serious confusion discerning who voted for whom.

Part of me thinks we should back off and just say "make your vote clear" - but on the other hand, it's easier on whoever's counting if they can just CTRL+F all instances of the word "vote" to look for votes. *shrug* I'll leave such matters of decision-making up to wiser men than me.

Hey all:

Whenever I count votes, I use the typical highly technical tally marks, and make a note of the username at the bottom of the piece of paper where the intention may be questionable.

However, I did not post an exact count with only the "Vote" marked votes because my count came out exactly the same as Kevin's.

Also, reviewing the post a tthe top, this is the first I can remember in a long time that doesn't say "please use the word VOTE" in your vote.

Frankly, both are deserving, and it sounds like the Stowe's are willing to concede to Brian.

I don't think anyone's really debating the outcome of THIS one, at this point, Joel. But we might want to make sure we don't run across this again.
