Tacoma Frost Park Chalk Off Scoreboard

Because the number of "Chalk Off" contests at Frost Park are accumulating, I have assembled a chronology for easy reference and continuity of the events. Feed Tacoma has a good search function too.   Plus, its a way to give the chalk art drawings now long gone some additional life.

Tacoma Frost Park Chalk Off Contest Chronology

Explanation: the artists below have prevailed in the Frost Park Chalk Off Challenge on the date indicated on Friday at noon.  The contests are held in Downtown Tacoma at 9th and Pacific Avenue

For the following week, these Tacoma artists held the title of "Best Illustrator in the World of Tacoma."  All Tacoma residents are invited to participate and challenge these artists, draw for fun or just enjoy lunch and good conversation.

For artists, here's a chance to display your talents and acquire some extra visibility for yourself and your "work."  Just one caveat: you have to prevail against all other artistic challengers of the day.

Episode I: Week 1

LupinGoddess prevails with "Horse of a Different Color"
on April 11, 2008.

Episode No. 1 Synopsis
: At the first Frost Park Chalk Off Challenge, RR Anderson attempted to secure the first win by sketching a variant of a well know disenfranchised youth drawing found on a napkin.  Once RR left the park, LupinGoddess aka Andrea Trenbeath Lowen out powers RR by sketching "Horse of a Different Color" and becomes the first Frost Park victor.

Prize won: none.  However, the very first Tacoma Frost Park Chalk Off victor forever holds a special position just as Kelly Clarkston obtained in American Idol or Richard Hatch in Survivor.

Artist statement of Lupin Goddess:

Tools of the Trade (for art): anything I can get my hands on - even dead animals aren't safe.

Art specialties:  paintings, drawings and jewelry at Unstable Art.

Artist statement of Elle:

Episode V: Week 5

Lupin Adjusts Her Approached and Dominates with "Mon-Frog" on May 9, 2008

Episode No. 5 Synopsis : Having forfeited her initial title of "Best Illustrator in the Universe of Tacoma" after Episode I and deprived of any win for a month, the question arose as to whether Lupin, the one time star of Frost Park, had sufficient "game" to ever take the title again.

No doubt Andrea has considerable artist skills demonstrated in other mediums.  However, could she acclimate to the brutish conditions of Frost Park which contestants like Stowe seemed to thrive and with the bar considerably raised?

After a few attempts, the answer was yes.  From what I could observe, here's how she pulled it off:

First, she changed her chalking style.  Abandoning her wispy ethereal approach, Andrea employed black chalk (charcoal?) for the first time and solid colors which make for more striking presentation.

Second, she based her chalk art entry on a strong Tacoma theme, pretty much a necessity for Frost Park entries, and a quality some of her earlier pieces lacked  In this case, a 72 hour film festival entry and melded it with her artistic strengths.

Third, she simply had a good day and exhibited a lot of craft.

Prize won: A $20 gift certificate from The Red Hot and a glass bottle trophy.

Latest Artistic Statement of Lupin (Andrea):

...in the past I've abstained from voting, choosing instead to plug my ears while singing LA LA LA very loudly.
Art specialties:  paintings, drawings and jewelry at Unstable Art.

Chalk Technique employed : lycanthrope, dinosaurs, chalk color explosions, creatures of the underworld, surrealistic city museums.

Frost Park fashion theme : variations on Lara Croft.

Episode VI: Week 6:

Stowe teams up with Tacomamamma to win.

Episide VI Synopsis: Stowe won Episode VI by taking a number of actions:

First, he promised any winning proceeds from Episode VI would go to Tacomamama.

Second, he employed a strong Tacoma theme of Tacomamama herself to draw making a support for his submission strongly correlated with Tacomamama.

Third, he and Tacomamama made an open plea for votes through their social networks, Tacomamama through Feed Tacoma and Stowe through his blog Art by Stowe.

It was a good tactic for both for both of them.  Tacomamama received the prize while Stowe accumulated a Frost Park Chalk Off win.

Prize won: A overnight stay in a downtown condo worth $210 and a double matter original art work piece by Laura Hannan which served as the certificate.

Latest Artistic Statement of Stowe:

...in the past I've abstained from voting, choosing instead to plug my ears while singing LA LA LA very loudly.
Art specialties:  Illustrations.

Now that's the kind of monster posts i'm talking about. What will happen next week? Unanswered questions remain: will Lance draw another Murray Morgan Bridge themed illustration? Is Lance in love with the Murray Morgan Bridge? If Lance LOVES the Murray Morgan Bridge so much why doesn't he just marry it?

What will Elle draw next week? What about the Orange Ape Guy? What about LupinGoddess? What other DARK HORSE chalk artists might show up? So much excitement, I might have a pencil accident!

by NineInchNachos on 4/29/2008 @ 12:41am
Also did you see kevin's post about the tollefson plaza chalk art clone? That was way cool. decentralized civil chalk movements man. awe inspiring!

Wow. I noticed that there had been a lot of posts about the chalk contests but it is impressive to see them all listed in one place!

Hopefully I will have a good excuse to NOT draw in the coming weeks.

There are a zillion of them. The above at least captures some of the major ones.

What other DARK HORSE chalk artists might show up?

I have heard that there may indeed be one with a quite different approach than what has been out there.

What about the Orange Ape Guy?

I think Stowe is picking the right time to "unleash" himself on Frost Park. Given his work large portfolio of professional (dark and scary) work, the orange ape drawing was clearly a warm up. Then again, maybe he will draw a cake design.

BTW, the sponsor has come through and there are more coming online. More later.

NiN, your little foray into Venn diagrams reminds me of the brilliant graphical dissertation of why Mims is hot from the Village Voice. Anyone who has not seen this needs to check it out, post haste. Unless it's just funny for math geeks?

Here's a sneak preview of the sponsor award for the victor of this week's Frost Park Chalk Off No. 4 to be held on 5/2/2008 from Embellish Salon:

www.flickr.com/photos/tacoma-urbanist/24...

Its a whole bag of goodies including a $40.00 haircut. The highest valued sponsor prize offered yet for a chalk off.

Nice summary of events - it is rather hard to keep track of all the Frost Park posts that have been flying this way and that.

Hahahaha! I hadn't seen that yet. Most awesome, indeed.

Thanks Adam. Hopefully, it will add some continuity to past events. We will see how it all ends up.

Seeing the results tabulated makes me think perhaps there should be some "super prize" for the artist that accumulates the most Frost Park wins.

Hmmm.

by ensie on 4/29/2008 @ 11:48pm
Dammit. I really need to learn how to draw in the next three days as I clearly need to win the next Chalk Off.

by Heather on 4/30/2008 @ 12:21am
I wonder if we could entice Teddy Haggarty.

For next week, of course! I have the feeling this week is going to be all about amatuers competing for that Embellish prize.

Those are fighting works Heather.

Teddy is certainly welcome in Frost Park to join the fray and demonstrate his chalk skills. Does he need a haircut?

Good.

The newest "Unknown Artist" has just informed me that she is going to show up. Her genre is quite a bit different from anything I have seen so far and she chalks with an Automatic Writing type fury.

Ooooooooh, the drama!!!!!!

by Erik on 5/7/2008 @ 1:11am
Ok. I added:

Episode IV : Week 4 in the scoreboard with Stowe;s win. See above.

Here's part of it:

Episode No. 4 Synopsis : After drawing a simply monkey in Episode 3 in order to assess the conditions in Frost Park, Stowe throws down a slew of chalk forming a multi hued volcano.

Although prepared to use her social networking site to retain her title, Elle experiences an artist ethical epiphany of sorts preventing her for voting for her own piece and ends up voting for Stowe's submission.

by Adam the Alien on 5/7/2008 @ 2:19am
Looks like you may want to adjust the dimensions on your week four pics, there, Erik. Stowe is looking pretty smooshed.

by dawntown on 5/11/2008 @ 10:14am
Ooohh, Im here, finally! So whats up with Illustrator of the World? I most certainly bow down in the presence of such talent, but for the rest of us artsy fartsy who didn't receive the kiss of god, what can we compete for?

by Erik on 5/12/2008 @ 1:16am
Thanks for weighing in dawntown.

Ooohh, Im here, finally!

Are you the same Dawn shown here?

but for the rest of us artsy fartsy who didn't receive the kiss of god, what can we compete for?

For starters, the victor receives the title of "Best Illustrator in the Universe in Tacoma" for a week. One would think that would be enough. Yet, there is more.

Second, winners receive the sponsor prize of the week. See the episode guide above that is posted.

Third, you receive unparalleled fame and media exposure in the Tacoma blogosphere, independent movies and other Tacoma media. Last week was pretty insane for media coverage, sponsor interest and potential work contracts in Frost Park. A select number of the photosets, posts and video links are listed above for each episode.

Fourth, you have a chance to win the title of the "Best Illustrator in the Universe of Tacoma" for the entire year if you prevail in the most challenges which would confer to you unspeakable fame and prestige.

by Erik on 5/13/2008 @ 9:56pm
Ok. Now I have added Episode V to the Frost Park Scoreboard.

Here's how the Frost Park Chalk Off Scoreboard stands today:

Lupin 2 wins
Elle 1 win
RR 1 win
Stowe 1 win

Time will tell whether a challenger can pull away from the rest or whether the wins will simply be rotated around the contestants. Yes, Andrea has accumulated two wins. Yet, she was the first to win the first time.
