Today: Chalk Artists Battle in the Heat For A Free Meal at Frost Park

Today is the weekly chalk off competition at Frost Park located at 9th and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma at noon.

You cannot see FROST PARK in one view, as if it were a changeless spectacle from which a curtain might be lifted, but to see it you have to toil from month to month through its labyrinths.

It is a thing more difficult to traverse than the Alps or the Himalayas, but if strength and courage are sufficient for the task, by a year's toil a concept of sublimity can be obtained never again to be equaled on the hither side of paradise.

Today, the weather is forecast to be considerably cooler.

See everyone there.

by morgan on 7/31/2009 @ 5:59am
You know it's hot when 86 is cool!

by Earthdaughter on 7/31/2009 @ 7:59am
Bring lots of water! I plan to bring a bucket and some towels. Squirtguns might be fun too if folks promise not to squirt those of us that don't appreciate cold, wet surprises! Or a kiddie pool? Wonder if they'd bust us if we did that? Too bad the fountain isn't working.

by L.S.Erhardt on 7/31/2009 @ 8:12am
Get ready for something AWESOME!!!!!

by KevinFreitas on 7/31/2009 @ 8:47am
I'm ready for something awesome! Can't wait -- should be a glorious day for chalking. I'll be there shooting a new set of time lapses. See everyone at noon!

by Erik on 7/31/2009 @ 9:22am
Bring lots of water!

Bottled water is sold across the street at the deli.

Right now there are still a few clouds out.

by Earthdaughter on 7/31/2009 @ 9:56am
Erik! Bottled water is bad for the environment!!! Bring your own refillable water bottle. I'm bringing non-drinking water for cooling off with. Also lots for Jim and me to drink. See you there.

by NineInchNachos on 7/31/2009 @ 10:26am
that's one piece of equipment I need to get... a decent canteen

by L.S.Erhardt on 7/31/2009 @ 10:26am
"I'm bringing non-drinking water for cooling off with"

As in non-potable water? Where does one get that besides the Puyallup River or Wapato Lake or Snake Lake or Commencement Bay or the Puget Sound or the Hylebos Creek or Swan Creek or American Lake or Puget Creek or the Foss Waterway or that creek under Marine View Drive between Brown and Dash Points or that springs in Point Defiance or China Lake or...

But yeah you're right about bottled water. Only thing worse is the stuff they import from France or Fiji. Really? Truck and fly bottles of water 10,000 miles?
When you notice that Evian is "Naive" spelled backwards, it makes you think.

by NineInchNachos on 7/31/2009 @ 1:41pm
nice turn out today. stay tuned for later today for pics..

by Erik on 7/31/2009 @ 1:44pm

All solid this week, but I've got to vote Brian.

by daydreamer on 7/31/2009 @ 2:15pm
Today's crop of art is very nice. I like Jim's bird, and RR Anderson's lettering very nice and the fried egg is a hoot...(it reminds me of my childhood growing up in Phoenix where you really could do this). Still, I really like Thorax's take on Van Gough, so I am voting for Thorax.

by Erik on 7/31/2009 @ 2:28pm
Nice entries.

Yet Brian takes the day. I vote Brian.

by Zanna on 7/31/2009 @ 2:41pm

Wow, I saw a bunch of cute kids out today working on those ice cream cones, their faces looked beyond happy to be involved. I vote for them!!

by Tat2Fan on 7/31/2009 @ 6:06pm
OMG Brian is amazing I vote for Brian Best yet

by Earthdaughter on 7/31/2009 @ 6:11pm
@T O'T - non-drinking water was just tap water in a not-really-clean bucket so I wouldn't have drunk it!
Good eye on Avian! I hadn't noticed that or heard it if that's old news!

I do love Van Gogh and sunflowers are sooooo appropriate for this week. I really want to vote for you TOT, but I've got to go with Brian's skeleton drawing itself! I vote Brian.

by Tataddict on 7/31/2009 @ 6:20pm
I vote for Brian. Love the Marshmallow

by Bjr on 7/31/2009 @ 6:39pm

SUPER nice entries!

Thorax's really pops out at me. I like the colors

My VOTE is for Thorax!

by KevinFreitas on 7/31/2009 @ 7:01pm
Crap, no one chalker made it an easy choice this week. Props to RR for his quirky, old timey products. Jim's bird is just a great piece. The Montessori kids rocked their square! I'm digging on what Donovan and Benjamin are laying down. Brian's is border-line brilliant. Loved David Boe's homage to his own Tollefson Plaza egg frying experiement.

But I gotta vote for Thorax's Van Gogh reproduction. This sort of thing reminds me of being in the Louvre when I was in high school and remembering, more than anything, the budding artists there reproducing all the famous works right in front of them. It's a beautiful thing.

Don't forget to tell your friends to vote and that they can join in via Twitter using the #frostpark tag. Cheers!

by thecokeman on 7/31/2009 @ 7:17pm
my vote is for brian!!!! I've seen his other art work and it kick's butt. look forward to seeing what is next. excellent job brian! Everyone else did a very nice job. the pop can was cool benjamin but it should have been a coke can better luck next week.

by mopardude on 7/31/2009 @ 8:11pm
I vote for BRIAN!
Very creative and interesting, the artist draws you into the picture with the different colors and pic itself. Makes me stop and go huh? thats cool, and wierd.
Good Job Brian.

by L.S.Erhardt on 7/31/2009 @ 10:56pm
If Van Gogh didn't impress this week, I guess I'll have to bring out bigger guns next Friday...

by KevinFreitas on 7/31/2009 @ 11:25pm
Maybe it's the ferby avatar. ;)

by L.S.Erhardt on 8/1/2009 @ 12:03am

Nice stuff! I really liked the Van Gogh, and I thought the PhotoChalk was clever, too. Had I voted, I would have voted Montessori. I won't be able to attend any more Friday Chalk-Off's, but I will still try to vote before voting closes each week.

by Erik on 8/3/2009 @ 2:13am
Congrats Brian!

Came across this tutorial in my Google reader for anyone who wants to experiment with making custom chalk colors:

Looks pretty simple. Just some plaster of paris and tempra paint and voila: custom colored chalk!

by L.S.Erhardt on 8/3/2009 @ 3:16pm
that is the greatest thing EVER
