When Chalk Meets Sidewalk Remarkable Things Happen.

~ OR~

By Forces We Can Scarcely Understand...

"Children were once taught to sketch. Back in the day, little fellows learned drawing right alongside the three R's. High school and college reinforced the importance of sketching in drafting courses.

On the surface, drafting stressed the formal use of pens, T-squares, and French curves. But at the heart of drafting lay means for making understandable sketches -- pictures of our imagined realities that a machinist or FELLOW TRAVELLER could easily grasp. Since then, that focus on quickly rendering ideas into pictures has faded. Why?

Others have argued that thought cannot arise from experience alone. It needs some expressive vehicle. Words are one such vehicle. But our own mental pictures are equally important.

Just think about our early human forebears making fine CAVE-SIDEWALK art at the same time they were developing spoken language. It was they who began the Paleolithic forward leap in SIDEWALK CHALK technology." (THE LAST EPISODE, SEASON FINALLY)

come rain or shine, I plan on being at the finale assuming the busses back from Seattle don't get lost in Fife or somestrange hing as that.

by KevinFreitas on 10/31/2008 @ 7:02am
It's *SO* on. I can't wait to see everyone and who comes out the victor this season. Best part is, anyone can upset the three-way tie so it's all on the line.

by Elle on 10/31/2008 @ 8:20am
My goal is to make it this week. Unless it is pouring. We all know how much I hate the rain.

by Mandiferous on 10/31/2008 @ 8:24am
Soundtrack is ready... stereo is in the car... umbrella is next to the desk.... It's on like Donkey Kong.

by izenmania on 10/31/2008 @ 8:33am
Not lookin' too good for you at the moment, Elle.

by joel413 on 10/31/2008 @ 9:06am
Damnit Elle! Why do you gotta be made of sugar.

by dawntown on 10/31/2008 @ 9:49am
I have an idea:

maybe we should just draw large bands of color, starting at Commerce and down to Pacific, and let the rain create a river of rainbow color. Then anyone and everyone can help

We could pool all our left over chalks and separate them into Reds, Oranges, Yellows, Greens, Blues, and Purples

Or just wing it. Do I have a concurrence?

by dawntown on 10/31/2008 @ 9:50am
How squeeky lalala is that!

by Erik on 10/31/2008 @ 10:03am
We have (almost) always lucked out with the weather. Looks like the vertical panels will be in high demand again.

Oh. And we can't forget RR's special art for today:

Finally have access to Feed Tacoma again! Whew!

Gonna have to vote for Stowe's portrait of Larry Frost. What a great tribute to end the season with.

by cassioposa on 10/31/2008 @ 3:17pm
Glad I could make it out for the last episode this season! I really enjoyed everyone's work and definitely appreciated the artists' dedication despite the weather. I'm still amazed at what they can crank out in just an hour!

For my vote, I'm going to have to go with Stowe. Stunning colors, and overall, really great depiction of Larry Frost.

by herban on 10/31/2008 @ 3:24pm
Excellent work by all.
Thank you to Eric for all his documentation of the year, without which the chalk offs would not have reached the significant level they did.

Our vote is for Adam for capturing the spirit of the weekly event. We wish you all the best of wishes, and please drop in any time.

Steve and Gretchen

by ElectricElliot on 10/31/2008 @ 3:26pm
Stowe, great portrait of Frost, however my vote goes to Dawn's stunning use of weather. That's my kind of art.

by Adam the Alien on 10/31/2008 @ 3:32pm
I wish I'd been able to draw what I was picturing...as it was, I didn't get everyone in there that I wanted to, nor with as much detail. I wasn't quite counting on rain when I imagined my final piece in my head.

Though the other pieces are all very splendid, I'm going to do the cheap thing and vote for myself this week...I need at least *one* win, and I'm not about to hurt my chances at that by voting for someone else. :-D

I'm glad I chalked next to Stowe, though...one of my original ideas was to have the ghost of Officer Frost in my drawing...so, given my frustration in achieving my vision, having Stowe's Frost next to my drawing allowed me to skip that part.

Also: Elliot, I just saw your trailer for today's chalk-off. I absolutely loved it! Very awesome. :-)

by Adam the Alien on 10/31/2008 @ 3:39pm
Our vote

*wonders if that counts as one vote or two*

:-D

by aslanenlisted on 10/31/2008 @ 4:18pm
my vote is for Adam the Alien because he should win because he is a winner and I met him this week and we had a fun time and we made a video, which very badly needed editing although we did not edit it.. Adam the alien is the best chalker ever... hmmm did I mention my vote was for adam the alien?

by Mark Monlux on 10/31/2008 @ 4:32pm
It was a lot of fun to work with the wet and flowing sidewalks of Tacoma again. The rain did half the work for me with the ghosts. But, as much as I love my own work, I think I'm going to vote for Stowe this week. Not only because of his terrific rendering of the late Officer Larry Frost, but because I truly think that he is the best illustrator in the Universe.

This is a vote for Stowe.

by jamesstoweart on 10/31/2008 @ 5:02pm
Wow, Mark... that really means a lot coming from you. I could easily say the same about you my friend.

by kathy on 10/31/2008 @ 5:49pm
Stowe gets my vote...hands down.
Great subject matter, exceptionally rendered (as usual) love the contrasting background color....
The late officer Frost looks just a bit creepy/undead/zombie-like...very Stowe on Halloween. Perfect!
Also there is a subtle sadness, a haunting quality to the portrait that I really like...nice tribute!

Dawn, love your rainbow in the rain and your message.
Mark, love your water-washed ghosts as well.

Loved the piece by "Eddy" too...Nice work!

Sorry I was not able to join you all today.

by judges19merescued on 10/31/2008 @ 6:11pm
Well, for most frightening costume of our 3 champs, my vote goes to RR Anderson's "Aviator Sasquatch". (Super scary, dude!)

And YAY!!! Little chalk-ettes at the park tearin' it up today in the rain! Awesome job young Eddy, Master of Colorful Geometry!

Mark's ghost's are looked amazing on the rain-soaked concrete.
Stowe, Dawn(!), RR, Joel, and Adam (!!) all chose great themes and I thoroughly enjoyed looking at each one.
Only get one vote though (poop.) and it goes to Stowe,

by ALT on 10/31/2008 @ 6:13pm
It was of course after the Chalk Challenge was finished up that I realized we missed a great opportunity to dress in character. RxR, Stowe and myself should have come dressed as our miscreant alter egos! The crazy thing was, I had brought my wolf tail and had simply forgot to put it on.

...However, a few people got a glimpse of Lupin catching the bus after giving Brick and Mortar Gallery its bi-weekly cleaning.

As for my favorite entry, I'm going to need a little more time before casting my vote.

by Erik on 10/31/2008 @ 6:13pm
Andrea and Stowe look like the top contenders today.

From Darkain:

Andrea:

Stowe:

More at

www.darkain.com/gallery/1082_Sidewalk_Ch...

Andrea once again delivers a beautiful well themed piece which would have won many of the chalk offs. She may have even delivered the best executed piece of the day.

But Stowe's timing of a Larry Frost portrait on the final episode in Frost Park has such a strong authentic theme, it carries the day for me. The timing is perfect. The piece is powerful.

Thus, I vote for Stowe for episode XXX.

by NineInchNachos on 10/31/2008 @ 6:17pm
Larry Frost by Stowe

Andrea's Wolf Transport

Mark Monlux Sea Ghost

Jeremy (the garfield kid)

Dawn's Color Deluge

RR's I-5 Dystopia

by NineInchNachos on 10/31/2008 @ 6:29pm
nice showing for the last episode. Nice work my friends.

I like how my dystopian rendering of the I-5 corridor looks in Darkain's gritty photo.

Also I have that gnome book so andrea's piece really speaks to me.

I gotta go with STOWE for my vote. I've been waiting for him to draw Frost for a long time. Truly a HAUNTED drawing. I wish people who knew Officer Frost could see that drawing.

by dawntown on 10/31/2008 @ 7:57pm
Oh man, thank you again for the awesome pics Darkain!

Stowe, my man, this votes for you. Look at that! Doing what you do best...

Thanks all who showed up today. Monlux, thank you for the boost of yellow. EE, thanks for the vote, man. I hope your video goes, well, and if possible, edit out all my "ums" if you use my interview :)

It has been one hell of a time with the Chalk-offs. I got to meet some really great people through it, and I am most grateful for that. Thank you everyone who have been involved and have supported this over the past few months.

See you next year!

by WaywardScooterGirl on 10/31/2008 @ 8:44pm
Lovin' the Rainbow, Dawn! I'm gonna have to vote for yours.

by KevinFreitas on 10/31/2008 @ 8:58pm
Fantastic work all! Been one hell of a season. I love Dawn and Mark's use of the rain. It was great to see Jeremy back in the action. Loved chickadee's eyes around the park. Andrea's was charming, Stowe's Frost moving, Joel's and Adam's were epic...

But I vote RR. His "No Exit"...

...is a brilliant reflection on his Episode 1 entry...

...and before that the amazing anti-Tacoma napkins that I posted after finding at a local pizza joint...

You are the original, sir. This vote's for you!

by TacomaGnome on 10/31/2008 @ 9:37pm
I shall vote for Mr. Stowe.

A fitting winner to the final episode.

Mr. Joel's retrospective was nice as well, and thank you to Andrea for the mention.

by Girl Who <3 JUNK on 10/31/2008 @ 9:58pm
My vote is for Stowe.

Dawn, I also love your rainbow.

You all have a great night!

by Dianne on 10/31/2008 @ 10:11pm
Jeremy's picture got all rained out. It was a cool Halloween theme Garfield. He drew two gravestones, one said R.I.P. Garfield, and a Garfield zombie was standing in between the gravestones. I vote for Jeremy and zombies for Halloween.

by tacomachickadee on 10/31/2008 @ 10:51pm
I am SO glad that my kids had a day off school today. Eddie, especially, has been asking about when he would be able to go abck to Frost Park again, and thanks to him just starting kindergarten, I had to break it to him that the odds were not good ... that he has school. So today's event was a fantastic season finale. My three kiddos and I had great fun ... Little Chickadee made a devil pumpkin (reminiscent of the devil duck someone put in the foumtain once upon a time) and editorialzed about
BRAIIIIINs .... Baby Girl had her fun, and Eddie continued his geometric, abstract monster theme. Dude gets IN to it ... and so I VOTE for Eddie. But a big shout-out to all ... Mark's ghost and Stowe'd FroSt especially caught my eye. Get it? EYE?!?! (i had much fun drawing eyes today ...)

by anubismp on 10/31/2008 @ 11:47pm
I vote for Andreas Travelocity wolf

by anubismp on 10/31/2008 @ 11:47pm
As always great job everyone

by Erik on 10/31/2008 @ 11:55pm
He drew two gravestones, one said R.I.P. Garfield, and a Garfield zombie was standing in between the gravestones.

That's scary.

by Dave_L on 10/31/2008 @ 11:57pm
1 VOTE for Stowe
The editing zombie keeps wiping the rest of my post, but there's my vote. I'll try again later.

by ALT on 10/31/2008 @ 11:57pm
Dawn, great use of color AND rain - together they made the piece! Loved Adam's collage of chalkies and their creations. Stowe, an amazingly well executed portrait of Larry Frost. I'm going to have to cast the vote for myself however - I really like how it turned out.

by Frinklin on 11/1/2008 @ 12:01am
Damn, Damn, Damn... I am sorry I missed the finale, but I had a job interview and standing outside under possible rain wasn't the best way to get ready. A terrific finale from what I can see, and my vote is wavering between andrea and stowe. So, what else is new?

I'm torn, but I have to go with Stowe's iconic Larry Frost. That needs to be made into a poster for next year.

by Dave_L on 11/1/2008 @ 12:08am
...Anyway, I just drove by the park again at 11:30 p.m. and Stowe's depiction of Officer Frost is incredible at night. Knowing I couldn't pull it off myself, I was hoping someone would do a Larry Frost memorial someday. Though I also loved the other pieces, from Joel's retrospective, to Adam's great illustration of Frost Park, to Dawn's flowing colors, to Mark's red-eyed ghosts. The Chickadee kids did some very strong pieces, and Mom's eyes were everywhere. What an end to a great season.

by Erik on 11/1/2008 @ 12:12am
There it folks. The season is over.

Stowe wins Episode XXX

Today was a Stowe blowout. Stowe strongly prevailed without either voting for himself or employing a single voting zombie.

Congratulations Stowe! You have won not only Episode XXX but the entire Frost Park Chalk Off Series,

Consequently, you are the Best Illustrator in the Universe of Tacoma for 2008.

by Erik on 11/1/2008 @ 12:21am
Here are Stowe's prizes that he won today:

Wow...

I am the Greatest Illustrator in the Universe (of Tacoma)!?!?

Acceptance speech? Sure, why not... I got the title, who is going to stop me?

SO, Who would have thunk it. Honestly, I had my money on another horse. First let me say thank you to everyone who voted for me and everyone that came out to the Chalk-Offs and Feed>>Tacoma each and every week. I have gained much more than I thought possible when I first decided to go down to the Park that 3rd Episode in... what was it... April? Since then I've gained friends, collaborators, conspirators, an artist mentor (or two) and a re-prioritized drive to work in Tacoma for Tacomans. Thanks to Frost Park I've done art festivals, art auctions, artist tours and I've gained access to one of the most unique studio spaces in the city. I've been contracted to create art by the city, a local poet, a certain home town internet company, City Arts magazine, an Izenmaniac and the best hot dog selling, beer slinging neighborhood bar I've ever stepped foot in. I've been on UTube. I've been invited to contribute to a Beautiful Angle poster. I am a founding member of a secret clandestine underground cartoonist society (a personal life goal). I've put on an Art Show (deemed surprisingly somewhat successful). After all that I actually managed to pull off becoming the Greatest Illustrator in the Universe (of Tacoma)... with a back to back late season comeback no less.

Oh, and Frost Park helped me loose 120 lbs.

I am literally a different person now than I was 7 months ago.

So thank you R.R. Anderson. Thank you Joe Izenman. Thank you Eric Bjornson. Thank you Kevin Freitas. Thank you Andrea, Dawn, Adam, Mark, Lisa, Elliot, Lance, Jeremy, Ariel, Joel, Andrew, Dave, Chalk Ringers and Junior Chalk Enthusiasts. Thank you voters. Thank you sponsors (especially the Noglers, Courtney Stowe, Embellish Salon, Laura Hanan, the UrbanXChange and Electric Elliot). Thank you ZOMBIES (you know who you are). And thank you to everyone I've missed.

I will not take my duties as the GITU(OT) lightly. I will continue to produce Art and Illustrations for Tacomans that Tacoma can be proud of. I will celebrate my city and never put her down. I will always play with chalk.

And be ready... for next Spring you will have to pry my title from my cold, dead, chalk stained claws.

— James (The Prince of Chalk) Stowe

You deserve it sir! God bless.

Hear, Hear! A Standing Ovation and a cloud of chalk dust as we all applaud your victory. I must say to everyone that lunch at the Herban Cafe was all the better looking at the fantastic display they currently have. Kudos to all who have stuf displayed there, they are also very proud of the display there too!

Alert to Dawn!!! My wife wants to buy the Frost ParK "Frotsy Drink" piece from you if it is for sale. please find me at joel_i_larson@hotmail.com!!!

by ALT on 11/3/2008 @ 11:36am
Congratulations Stowe! I can't say I'm surprised after you've delivered mind-blowing works time after time. It has been both an honor and a real challenge crossing chalk with you and the rest of our Frosty Fighters!
