Urbanist Acquires Ultra Rare, Hyper Local, Tacoma Pont 21 Wine

Today, I travelled with Frost Park fan Elizabeth to the hidden North End Winery and met vinter Philip Coates:

Just four barrels contain an entire upcoming vintage.

Secret wine Stash off N. 21st Street

Here, Coates makes his own wine from grapes from eastern Washington.  He crushes and processes them all here.  No pre-made juices.

Here it is folks, the first known online photo of a Pont 2 bottle in the winery.

Tacomans spend a great deal every day on wine.  Re-directing some of those funds into local wineries adds a great deal to the local economy, creates a meaningful local product and does not require shipping across the country.  The winery will soon have a tasting area so many people can walk and taste locally owned wine from their residence.   I think James Kunstler would approve and drink to the concept.

Kudos the to Planning Commission and the City Council for making the significant zoning change to allow this winery to exist.   Now on to making micro distilleries legal in Tacoma.

First tasting at Rosewood Cafe:

Smooth. Complex. Fun.

Kris Blondin's review:

For the wine geeks, I will only add that Robert Parker from the Wine Advocate would approve wholeheartedly of this big red. My guess is that he would give it a Wine Advocate score of 89 - 90.

Yes, the underground winery has a direct connection to Tacoma's underground Chinese tunnel network.

I displayed a lot of restraint not ordering a glass at the Rosewood, but I was on the clock. I hope they don't run out by this weekend.

THIS WINE ROCKS!!! Thanks, Erik, for entrusting me with Tacoma's underground secrets! Everybody else must attend.... No, really. This one is a lovely Cabernet.... I couldn't wait. Took it home, made up some really garlicky spaghetti sauce and just enjoyed the ride! (Note to Self: Pick up more Pont 21 asap.)

The amazing thing is that it's already been "cellar-ed." You don't see too many wines released that are already six years old!

The only thought that I have here is by having a winery in Tacoma, somehow it makes me happy..................and thirsty all at the same time. Woodinville has nothing on us (except lot's and lot's of culdesacs).

You mean Seattle is admiring something about Tacoma? Imagine that.

Did you have something to do with that Morgan?
