Whitney R & RR Anderson Take On Tacoma City Hall

As the momentum grows for Tacomans to rebuild, resuscitate and rehabilitate the city, the Tacoma blogosphere has grown now to over 100 interwoven blogs  with an exponentially growing readership base of many thousands.  New Downtown and neighborhood groups are being formed nearly every week.

In an act of self preservation, it was only a matter of time before the blogosphere would begin methodically monitoring Tacoma City Hall.

Dispatched from the collective, two known bloggers have taken up the task: Whitney Rhodes and RR Anderson, yet using radically different styles.

Methodology : Whitney Rhodes

With a newly minted degree in political economy and urban studies from UWT, Rhodes now covers Tacoma City Council meetings for Tacoma blog Exit 133.

Rhodes apparently attends the council meetings personally each week and posts her summaries to Exit 133 on Tuesday evenings.  Her posts have become very useful for those in the Tacoma community interested in civic affairs and governance.

In her last report on city council on 3/25/08, she explained:

Resolution 37429 brought an update on the progress of the LeMay Museum. The legislature gave an additional $300,000 to the project and this resolution was just an execution of the agreement with the state. The ground breaking ceremony for the project is scheduled for early Summer.

Clear, cogent and factual writing that gives readers a fair and balanced appraisal of the Tacoma City Council's actions.  No doubt she is taking good notes via a legal pad or Blackberry to summarize the council's actions each week.

Methodology : RR Anderson

It is doubtful that RR has ever personally attended a council meeting.

Instead, he obtains information about City Hall by accessing  the city's streaming video feed.

Somehow, he is able to bypass the city's media player and cut (hack?) directly into the data stream using an opensource VLC media 0.8.6e data capture app.

Once stored, he is able to manipulate it at his pleasure at his (questionably legal) technology center he refers to as Holistic Forge Works.

Here is RR's report from the last Tacoma City Council meeting:

"... And with my new army of replicants I will forge my will upon the world! eh ho ho ho!"
RR Commentary: Hands down my new favorite commenter of all time
Interesting, both Whitney and RR reported on the same city council meeting yet have widely different versions of the events.

Perhaps the difference between Whitney and RR's city council reporting style can be attributed to their background and view of the world.

Personal Statement: Whitney Rhodes

Whitney's statement about UWT Honors:

In Global Honors, it's not about competition, it's about achievement. You achieve greater things as a group than as individuals. We nurture each other. Every one has a chance to shine.

Nice.  Very positive.  Tacoma can certainly use Whitney's considerably talents and she is making good contacts at city hall for the benefits of all Tacomans.

Personal Statement: RR Anderson

RR Anderson appears to have a slightly different and perhaps darker view of the world:

The conspiracy is REAL and is wholly consumed to steal away the SLACK innate in every free man, woman & child. The conspiracy dictates that flimsy illusions and self-serving delusions rule most people's lives. Who cares? Nobody cares. Nobody has all the answers. Nobody will defend your rights. Nobody will lower your taxes. My advice is whatever befalls you, walk on unattached. Untouched...

(From Tacoma Gnome interview)

Commentary:

Tacoma needs every asset it has if it is going to be able to restore the social fabric of the city, reduce the amount of blight, and eliminate the episodes of mayhem by "hooligans."

We all work and sleep better knowing that at any particular time, there is a good chance that either Whitney or RR are on city hall duty.

Whitney is the Ying to my Yang.
Nice work sir. I have found this post to be highly amusing. I even learned a thing or two about myself!

My only criticism would be for you to take advantage of the headline features in kevin's html editing tool. My favorite is Headline 3 for subheadings... Headline 2 if you want to get dramatic.

Thanks. It took a lot of research.

I can use the technical advice. Ok. I have used it a bit. The view is deceptive in editing mode and I have always avoided it. The headlines used now are" headline 4."

With so many people using i feed Tacoma blogs, we might need to start a comment thread on it.

a fun trick with the headline tool, since they are block level elements you only need to have your cursor on that particular line. I used to think you had to select and highlight everything... not so!

Interesting similarity regarding RR & Whitney: They both look better in person than in these photos.

it's the pixilation

Hmmm ... the pixie-fication ... that makes sense now. Thanks NIN!

and

it's the pixilation

Yes. Not only were they taken from my cell phone camera, they were taken under the worst conditions.

Then, to add insult to injury, I brutishly "photoshopped" them on the free Flickr photo editor from the Go Local or Die Event and cropped them to the right size save for Whitney's orange glasses picture which is from UWT.

I still blame the pixies.

And are the glasses orange, or red? We should probably not query any color-blind folk.

Hard to tell but they appear to be the same color of RR's suspenders.
