Shoulda Been Reading The Tribune
I've been pissy lately and have been avoiding many things, one of which was reviewing my news alert e-mail messages from The News Tribune. Talk about self sabotage. If I had been keeping up, I would have known that I wanted to attend the City Council meeting last night. Apparently, according to Dan Voelpel, there was a discussion planned about the best way to spend $25 million to keep Russell or at least make our downtown and new "financial district" attractive to employees and employers. Public comment was invited and where was I? Watching cable television. Awesome.
Another interesting article that I missed was Peter Callaghan's, "It’s time to reassess Tacoma’s urban waterfront", which just screams for public comment and has thus far received only seven. I started to leave my comment, but got a little fired up and decided to get back to it after a little contemplation. Attached to the article was a video that I found interesting and worth watching but in need of some melon or alien editing talent.
Callaghan's article led me to Walk the Waterfront, a community organization dedicated to bringing to life a continuous, accessible, vibrant path along the seven miles of waterfront from the head of the Foss to the beach and trails of Point Defiance. This sounds like a very good thing to me. They have a printable petition and a lot of good information posted on their site.
Anyone want to share their thoughts on where "we" should spend the $25 million?
I know I've seen discussions fairly recently on f<<t and Exit 133 about our need for a truly walkable waterfront. Are we all talk and no action?
Speaking of action... are we going to get that fence removed before Tall Ships? There are only 21 days remaining before our downtown is filled with about a million people.

by Heather on 6/11/2008 @ 8:57pm | aha! that explains the silence on that front. I should keep reading the news, maybe I'll get caught up to reading that the meeting was canceled.
I actually just finished reading the Voelpel piece (after a lovely dinner a glass of wine with a good friend at the busy, but wonderful, Rosewood). Should have finished reading it before I wrote the above. The last sentence ("And it will show Russell Investments’ leadership team that average folks in Tacoma, like you and me, want the company to stay.") made me feel SO guilty -- then I read your comment and now I'm all better. Thanks NIN :) |
by NSHDscott on 6/11/2008 @ 10:22pm | Me and the butterflies in my stomach went to City Hall last night to give my little speech in support of the CTED LIFT RDA for Tacoma that Voelpel had written about, only to find that the meeting was cancelled. Sweet, another week to get more nervous! |
by Erik on 6/11/2008 @ 10:38pm | Walk the Waterfront, a community organization dedicated to bringing to life a continuous, accessible, vibrant path along the seven miles of waterfront from the head of the Foss to the beach and trails of Point Defiance. Walk the waterfront is a great group and is trying to keep the ships from multiplying by the Reconciliation Park. The NENC Opposed the expansion of Sperry Dock on the Foss Waterway. www.nenc.org/NENC-SperryDockOpinionLette... A wide esplanade should be extended from Ruston to downtown and around the Foss. Yet, there needs to be some mixed use buildings set back from the esplanade spilling onto it to create some life on it for it to be something more than yet another dead zone in the city which most of the Foss has been for 40 years. Point Ruston is designed surprisingly well. Other parts of the waterfront are currently inaccessible for one reason or another. We need to fight to take them back one piece at a time. |
by Heather on 6/12/2008 @ 10:31pm | Scott, I'll do my best to be there on Tuesday to support you and your butterflies.
Tonight's Open Space Community Meeting was interesting; I'm glad I went. The City is going to post information on-line tomorrow. I'll be sure to blog it or link it or something. |

About
Hello! I'm Heather and I'm a bit manic about Tacoma.
I'll probably be blogging about my experiences in Tacoma as they relate to the environment (natural and built), social (in)justice, community building, economic development, bio-diesel, public transit, biking, gardening, home improvement, food & wine, and my little family (me, my husband, one dog, one cat). This is my first attempt at writing a blog - so please bear with me.
