Ace Coming to Westgate

Tried to think of an "Ace of Base" joke but it wasn't happening

An empty lot in the Westgate North shopping center near the Safeway on 30th and Pearl has been torn up and is making room for a new building and tenant. As I passed by yesterday I saw a little sign posted and it's going to be an Ace Hardware. Now, I'm not too handy a man or anything but, I have to say, this will be a great addition to the neighborhood. Now, for quick bits like nails, duct tape, WD-40, etc. I can pop down the street instead of all the way down and into the mess that is the area that houses Lowe's and Home Depot.

Though it's still in a pretty typical, wasteful shopping plaza layout (though not as bad as this one in Lakewood) I'm happy to see a useless plot of parking being utilized for something that will serve a worthy need in this corner of town.

Not having a hardware store in the northend is crazy. Years ago, there was a small hardware store in the Proctor district, I miss it. Glad to see Ace Hardware coming in. I'm sure that I will be a customer. I hate the drive over to Lowes or Home Depot.

What I'd really like to see is a McClendon's Hardware move in to the T-Dome district. That would be sweet.

I grew up going to the original McLendon's in Renton. Those stores are awesome, I love making the long trip to Puyallup or Sumner when time allows...

I'll totally patronize Ace since it's just down the street. There's so much little stuff I imagine I'll get there and it's a pretty decent size store from the looks of it.

Hopefully this won't kill the Ace franchise operating out of Gray Lumber on 6th... I absolutely LOVE living blocks away from a hardware store. So nice not to have to go all the freakin' way to the Home Despot just for some screws.

by thriceallamerican on 9/9/2009 @ 10:27am
I don't think Gray is going anywhere, their primary business is in lumber with the added bonus of a good hardware store inside.

The AgriShop at 12th and Sprague also recently became an Ace.

What's with the sudden resurgence of the Ace brand?

What's with the sudden resurgence of the Ace brand?

Wonder if it has to do with exactly what we're talking about: them fitting more readily into smaller 'hoods? Though many cities have a few Lowes and Home Depots to choose from there are still dense pockets like Tacoma's North End where a big box store just won't easily fit.

It'd be interesting to see if Lowes or Home Depot decide to follow suit coming up with smaller stores at some point.

by L.S.Erhardt on 9/9/2009 @ 7:30pm
While that's not exactly close to me, it certainly is sweet.

We sure need some non-home depots or lowes around here. I hate being stuck patronizing the big box stores.

by jenyum on 9/9/2009 @ 7:41pm
Hey, that's actually useful.

Glad to hear it. I've been watching them mess with that lot and was nervous it was just an extension of the stripmall, which has plenty of vacant spots as is.

When I was a kid, there was an Ace on 6th Avenue. It was in the building that used to be the Birkenstock store.

by jcbetty on 9/9/2009 @ 10:17pm
Ahhhh, yesssss. Ace is the place with the helpful hardware man, after all. Stoked to see it, about two miles from my house as it is, but sad to see it happen after the moving-in-to-new-old-house frenzy of Home Dee Pot and Low, low, low's visits. My car never wants to go down Orchard again.

by Nick on 9/10/2009 @ 8:07am
Ugh, driving down orchard induces waves of nausea, I try to keep those trips to a minimum.

by fredo on 9/10/2009 @ 8:20am
We need a small hardware store in the north end so this will be good. There was an ace hardware on 6th avenue across from Kmart a few years ago but I guess it failed.

by KevinFreitas on 9/10/2009 @ 8:44am
I confess I don't remember the last time I've been in an Ace. What kind of hardware have folks been able to find there in the past that we can look forward to once this new store opens?

by Mofo from the Hood on 9/10/2009 @ 9:09am
I walked over to the grand opening of the 12th & Sprague store this summer. They had great incentives like $1.00, or near to, items including Ajax liquid laundry detergent, toilet paper, and paper towels.

Love the $1.00 pricing. Always gets my attention in advertising.

The ACE on 12th and Sprague is a blessing. While they dont carry a ton of specialty stuff like Gray, they do have your everyday kind of hardware stuffs (fix a leak, buy a new garden hose, tube of glue, get a hammer, box of screws, assorted o-rings, etc) and seem to be adding more all the time. They just had another run of dollar days last week, dont know if its still going.

I always thought it was a lawn mower shop on 12th and Sprague.. only recently I looked closer and saw the ACE sign. Will have to go there instead of all the way to home depot now.

I wish Lincoln Hardware was closer.

Ace isn't waisting any time. Lattice work for walls went up sometime last week and already bricks are going up! (Nice to see instead of them being torn down):

by Erik on 9/28/2009 @ 2:50pm
Nice.

The developers have already poured some cement for the Safeway in Proctor.

by L.S.Erhardt on 9/28/2009 @ 3:54pm
At least some things are going up.

by KevinFreitas on 11/2/2009 @ 6:43am
The Ace location is cruising right along with most of the exterior walls now masoned and ready to go:

by KevinFreitas on 1/28/2010 @ 10:33am
Latest update from Libby:

Lots of people busily stocking shelves at ace. No indication of opening date.
Awesome! Hope this means it won't be long. All the exterior construction fences are down but there's still no sign up.

by KevinFreitas on 2/5/2010 @ 6:52am
The windows are in, the lights are on, and they're stocking up!

by fredo on 2/5/2010 @ 6:54am
"Ace is the place with helpful hardware man" is the corporate slogan

Women need not apply.

by jenyum on 2/5/2010 @ 8:18am
Their slogan is actually "Ace is the place with the helpful hardware folks."

Edited to add: I guess it used to be "man" but that was a long time ago.

by Altered Chords on 2/5/2010 @ 8:33am
South End Ace Hardware. 18707 Pac Ave. also sells liquor. Very convenient. "I'll take a chainsaw, and axe, a sledgehammer and a fifth of vodka"

by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 2/5/2010 @ 8:55am
No doubt, South End Ace is the place if you need to have a screw driver.

by Altered Chords on 2/5/2010 @ 9:20am
Good one. There is also a walk in trauma center just up the way.

by KevinFreitas on 2/11/2010 @ 8:50am
Signage is up along the 30th Street and on their building. Inside the lights are on and a green neon sign toward the back of the store harkens "Garden Center". Hoping they'll be open sooner than later so I can take a look around and figure out all the small projects around the house can be finished by just a quick jaunt down the street!

by Altered Chords on 2/11/2010 @ 10:07am
Going to the store is only 1/2 the battle. Actually doing the work is the issue I'm working on. Taking down my Christmas light for example.

by KevinFreitas on 2/12/2010 @ 6:40am
Their not Christmas lights anymore, AC, they're party lights! ;)

by Altered Chords on 2/12/2010 @ 7:09am
I"ll spray paint them red for Valentine's day.

by Dave_L on 2/12/2010 @ 12:50pm
"I guess it used to be "man" but that was a LONG TIME AGO."
OUCH!
Oh yeah - I guess that was Connie Stevens. Or was it Joey Heatheton... No, that was Serta...
Ace does fit a lot of necessary stuff in a small foot-print. It's no Lincoln Hardware, but if you don't need something weird that only McLendon's (or Gray) has you don't need a big box store either.

by KevinFreitas on 2/17/2010 @ 7:00am
Here's the latest look at the new Ace hardware! Looking pretty good and there's plenty of activity stocking the shelves inside.

by KevinFreitas on 3/4/2010 @ 7:45pm
Update: Sign out front says their opening Monday, March 8th. Welcome to the neighborhood! I'll hit you guys up for some project needs soon!

by NEAL on 3/4/2010 @ 8:35pm
Awesome!

Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.

So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
