FeedTacoma Newness

Get yours today!

In case you missed any of the newness around FeedTacoma from the last couple weeks, I thought I'd do a brief recap.

Blog Templates

You can now change the look of your i.Feed blog in it's Settings area. There's two (besides the default) called "Rainy Night" and "Luzon Reflection" (the one I'm currently using) but I'd love to make more available. I'm not much of a designer but, if you are, feel free to send over your Tacoma-themed ideas as a PNG file and I'll work them up as new templates and make sure full credit is given.

Calendar Maps

There's a shiny new little map icon in the upper right corner of the Calendar main page that, if clicked, will show you what's going on around Tacoma in a whole new way. Mapistically! Making up words aside, it makes it easy for you to see where things are going on around town even with links to quickly zoom into your favorite neighborhood.

Community Directory

In your Account area you can now browse the many faces of the FeedTacoma community. It's a page-by-page who's who of the great folks that live and love Tacoma just like you do!

User Activity

Keep track of your fav FeedTacoma friends by checking out their latest activity. Just click anytime you see their name to the side of a comment or from the Community Directory to see their recent posts, thoughts, and events. Here's what I've been up to!

Very cool!

by NineInchNachos on 11/23/2009 @ 7:51am
when I save it says to please select a blog template, but I see no field for choosing one?

by Erik on 11/23/2009 @ 7:57am
Yeah. I don't see where one can do this from the account setting link.

by KevinFreitas on 11/23/2009 @ 8:33am
Sorry guys, it's there now. Still had it in beta mode. Give it a go and let me know what you think.

Likewise, to everyone, let me know what feature(s) you might like to see added next to FeedTacoma.

by Erik on 11/23/2009 @ 9:06am
It works!

I used another template.

Great work Kevin.

You deserve the Tacoma Awesomeness Prize.

by KevinFreitas on 11/23/2009 @ 9:59am
Thx Erik. Looks pretty good over on your blog!

by L.S.Erhardt on 11/23/2009 @ 11:34am
oh damn!

K-Fre... I don't have the option available either.

AND AND AND, will I be able to easily find the info needed (image sizes, etc) to make some templates? Cuz you know I'm gonna...

by L.S.Erhardt on 11/23/2009 @ 12:06pm
Wait, wait... ok, found it.
What are google stats?

You ought to provide like a template for making a theme OR have some kind of theme-editor!

This way, you wouldn't have to do ALL the work.

by NineInchNachos on 11/23/2009 @ 12:12pm
feedtacoma is on a slippery slope to user controlled CSS, which I find very attractive.

by L.S.Erhardt on 11/23/2009 @ 12:34pm
Imagine Feed Tacoma?

by KevinFreitas on 11/23/2009 @ 12:59pm
@TO'T, @NIN: I'll continue to code out and approve any new templates to maintain top quality. If anyone would like to design one, here's what you can manipulate based on the HTML structure available:
  • FT Menu Area - BCF
  • Page - BCF
  • Container - BCF
  • Blog Title - BCF
  • Blog Entry Content - BCF
  • Blog Entry Timestamp - BCF
  • Blog Entry Title - BCF
  • Blog Entry Subtitle - BCF
  • Blog Entry Links - BCF
  • Blog Comment Area - BCF
  • Blog Comment Separator Line - solid color and thickness
  • Right Sidebar Headings - BCF
  • Right Sidebar Content Boxes - BCF
  • Right Sidebar Links - BCF
B = background color and/or graphic
C = text colors
F = font size, type

Overall, I'd design for max 960px wide. I'm looking for completed PNGs of designs but feel free to let me know if I'm interested in a direction you're going before you put all the work into it. Overall, I'm looking for Tacoma-focused themes tied or not to individual places, seasons, events, etc.

by L.S.Erhardt on 11/23/2009 @ 1:08pm

Well, I sent you 6 very lovely pngs of some specific things in T-Town, such as the skyline and frisko freeze. Not pngs of complete themes. My bad.

by KevinFreitas on 11/23/2009 @ 1:10pm
@TO'T: I got those, thx. My advice would be to pick one or two, send me a heads up of what you're thinking, then design away and get me your finished PNG.

Would it help any would-be designers if I threw out some more specific design idea suggestions?

by NineInchNachos on 11/23/2009 @ 1:47pm
can we be more like twitter? pick colors and upload your own background image? :)

by jenyum on 11/23/2009 @ 3:22pm
The Tacomamama feed doesn't seem to be working anymore. Or maybe I'm just being impatient.

by KevinFreitas on 11/23/2009 @ 3:45pm
@jen: FeedTacoma looks like it's pulling everything as it should but the RSS you've pointed me to shows an Oct. 13th entry as the latest one: tacomamama.com/taxonomy/term/759/all/fee...

Let me know if I need to pull in a different feed and I'll switch it up straight away.

by jenyum on 11/23/2009 @ 4:23pm
Oh it's not you it's me. (But then you already new that) I had my categories set up to list alphabetically but only 10 items to come through per feed, so something with the title "Washington..." argh. Didn't realize that was effecting my RSS feeds.

by jenyum on 11/23/2009 @ 8:51pm
Came up with a little somethin somethin sending it your way. (Just went ahead and created a css file based on the Luzon reflection one.)

Screen shot.

Couldn't seem to do anything about the odd spacing with the social media links (looks that way in Chrome and prob Safari in all existing templates.)

by KevinFreitas on 11/24/2009 @ 5:27pm
And still more newness: Community member activity RSS. Here's mine! www.feedtacoma.com/account/user-activity...

by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 11/24/2009 @ 6:37pm
Thanks for the Community member activity RSS, now I'll know right away when fredo puts up a new hypothetical. The unmitigated joy!!

by Non Sequitur on 11/25/2009 @ 6:53am
RSS scares me.

Well, actually computers frequently terrify me.

by NineInchNachos on 11/25/2009 @ 8:01am
the only thing to we have to be terrorized of is terror itself.

by NineInchNachos on 11/25/2009 @ 8:29am
so cool kevin!

Have you thought about email posting capability like posterous.com ?

by KevinFreitas on 11/25/2009 @ 8:32am
@TO'T and everyone: In my own, personal FeedTacoma tenure I've posted 509 blog entries from KevinFreitas.net, 361 from my i.Feed blog, started 332 discussions, left 1782 comments (excluding this one), and added 594 events to the calendar. How, might you ask, do I know this?

Another new feature of course! I've added stats to your user activity. Great idea Thorax, thanks for that. Just click on someone's name near their comment or check out you fav FeedTacoman in the Community Directory to see anyone's stats.

And if anyone has any ideas for what they'd like to see on FeedTacoma someday just lemme know!

by NineInchNachos on 11/26/2009 @ 5:44pm
comic page embelishments? :)

Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.

So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
