I don't travel the freeway much but remember seeing this monstrosity being built on the hill overlooking Portland Ave. and I-5:
So how did it sneak into Tacoma while the city is embroiled in pending litigation with Clear Channel with a settlement that hinges upon our last hope of avoiding code changes that damage our prospect of ever getting Clear Channel to pay up? I've got two words for you: Puyallup Nation. A quick look-up of this parcel shows it's actually the same lot as the Shell gas station on the corner of Portland Ave and E. 28th. That lot is owned Puyallup International Inc. who, on their website, describe themselves as the "economic development arm of the Tribe." Further, this organization, also know as Marine View Ventures, contracts out management of it's billboard real estate to, you guessed it, Clear Channel.
This beauty then isn't really in Tacoma as we know it but it certainly is a model for what most in this city oppose looming overhead in our neighborhoods. It's the latest in state-of-the-art driver distraction and light pollution and, if our City and it's Council don't decide to fight Clear Channel so we can collect on that $32+ million fine, we'll be welcoming these to a neighborhood near you soon.
Here's more digital billboard pr0n to further glimpse into Tacoma's could-be future:
Seems Tacoma is happy to supply the power but can't deny the building permit
Plat map for this billboard hosting lot
Thanks to ttownwatcher for the tip!

|Kevin, back in the 1970's there was a commercial running on TV that showed white american's throwing garbage out of their cars and at the end of the commercial it showed an indian with a tear running down his face.
My what a difference 40 years makes.
Now the indians with their "develop teams" are trying to out pollute the white people. And I must say that your posting seems to validate my point. How could any real indian endorse this visual abomination?

|It's time to ask the tribes if they want to be part of this country or not. This whole thing they have going where they get the money, roads, social safety nets from our country while dodging taxes, ignoring the good of society as a whole, and raping the environment needs to stop. Screw thier casinos, gill netting salmon, ignoring environmental standards, tax dodging, entitlement grabbing, and thier basic "working the system" at the detriment of society.|

Maybe we injuns wouldn't be trying to "work the system" if there was an effing system. BIA stole Billions from that so called system and most tribes are barely surviving. As probably the only person on this board who use Tribal Health I'm glad to see the stupid billboard because maybe there's some money coming in from it and the next time I get a simple cavity the clinic MIGHT have enough funds to drill and fill instead of the manadated pull it. Or maybe next year Takopid will have enough flu shots for the high risk patients.
Screw it - ignorant bigots never actually research their bs and don't listen when someone tries to explain that the tax free, free education, get money for just being a member meme only applies to a very few grandfathered members of a few select tribes and not 90% of US Native Americans.

|So because some wrongs were done to native americans you favor placement of visually polluting digital billboards around the area? doesn't that kind of invalidate the native americans moral high ground as the stewards of all that is good?|
by daubermaus on 5/12/2011 @ 8:36pm
"Some wrongs" makes it sound so clean and unemotional.
.9% of the US population are registered Indians.
Note the word registered. My social security card does not look like yours. I didn't have a choice on the design - we call them Oppressed Peoples Papers. I cannot legal change my last name to my husband's and retain my alleged benefits.
I've personally had mumps, measels, whooping cough, and german measels. I have lost family members to F***ing polio, and friends to easily treated diseases.
Federally Mandated Tribal Health - "Don't get sick after June!" Because no one mandated a budget for basic needs.
Yeah, I support billboards on the Puyallup NATIONS' land. I support Casinos, cheap cigarettes, and drive thru beer stores.
I support anything that helps buy health care on US Reservations - Cause your tax dollars sure aren't making it to the clinics.
by Jesse on 5/12/2011 @ 8:53pm
|So I'm a bigot huh? |
I really couldn't give a crap if you were purple, in some odd club, or whatever. Your "group" happens to identify itself by it's ethnicity. If the tribe were 100% white clones of myself I would still think the way I do.
So is "Tribal Health" an entitlement program or do you pay into it as an insurance program?

I'm talking about the Puyallup tribe and those in Washington. And yes, they do use thier blood lines for tax free work, opening casinos that would otherwise be illegal, selling fireworks, selling liquor illegally, skirting court dates, raping our rivers of salmon, building obnoxious billboards, dodging every tax possible while getting 100% of the same benefits in the Social Security programs as a tax paying US citizen.
This is all fact. I am stating facts. Do facts make me a bigot?

Why are you entitled free health insurance on the US tax payers dime?
"Yeah, I support billboards on the Puyallup NATIONS' land. I support Casinos, cheap cigarettes, and drive thru beer stores. " -- daubermaus
A "nation" has it's own social systems, tax structure, etc. It doesn't need to suckle from the teet of another. This is exactly what I'm saying: the tribes should be abiding by US law to get US monies and benefits -- but they don't. All the benefits of US citizenship with highly deminished pitfalls. Get in or get out of the US system. Be a nation or not. Decide. The current system is unfair.

|Tired old racist meme's.
I do not get social security or ssi.
I do not get unemployment.
I do not get "Free" health care.
I do not get a check or allowance just for being a Native.
I do not get free college in any form and in fact do not get Gaurunteed Student Loans.
And in most states I cannot get "welfare".
My Nation pays the Puyallup Nation for my medical care. I pay my Nation.
I DO get taxed on every purchase I make.
I do have Social Security, unemployment, federal state and local taxes taken out of every pay check even though I can not make a claim on them.
I do get bullsh** bigotry every time I check the Native American box (as required by law) on a job application. And I have been refused jobs openly for being an injun.
And I DO believe those rivers belonged to the Puyallup Nation long before you raped them of their rights.

"The tribe’s gambling operations will create enough profits to provide the tribe with more than $105 million in total cash payments this year plus enough extra funds to help fund the tribe’s extensive social welfare, health and education programs. "
"The tribe annually gives millions to charity and for public purposes. It has helped finance Tacoma’s Fourth of July celebration and the annual Daffodil Parade. "

If your nation has it's own social security systems, instead of US systems, why did you say the above about US tax dollars?
... and you pay into SSI but don't get any of the benefits of it??? Hmmm...
by daubermaus on 5/12/2011 @ 10:24pm
|Let's try talking real slow....
You are using info that is not longer valid.
There has not been "Free" Indian Health care or College since the BIA defaulted (read stole) Billions from Tribal Trust.
I did state that my Nation pays for my health care.
I am required to pay all applicable taxes but I CAN NOT make a claim on most systems because I am a member of a Soveriegn Nation that just happens to be within the borders of the United States of America. My Nation is self supporting and has less than 2% un-employment. By default and because I'm a Navy Vet I have US citizenship.
You are using 1970's generated stereo-types without doing the research I find necessary to form an educated opinion.
And for the record I identify myself culturally as hindi/romani having left the Rez at 14yr old.
And that marks the end of my rant - it's not worth the stres to try to talk to someone who obviously is not listening.

|Yeah, let's keep it civil here people. The whole point of this post was more to make sure people knew why that sign was allowed and to illustrate it as an example for what many of us don't want popping up if the City allows the recommended sign ordinance changes to go through.

|I saw some of these digitals in Phoenix last week. At dusk you used to be able to see a wonderful panorama of purple mountains as you looked around the city of Phoenix. Now the panorama is pock marked with these monstrosities.
Folks, Kevin is sounding an alarm here and it's time for Tacomans to apply political pressure to prevent these billboards and remove the existing ones.

|This is a good opportunity to learn the facts about the Puyallup Tribe and other Native American peoples. I don't take being called a bigot lightly. |
Post more info if you can find it -- I'm not as good with a computer as most of you probably are.

The only demographic info I could find:
Overview: (A little older buy I'm no internet guru)
Wa State Tribal Tax Code:
Actual Tribal Fishing Code:
With every comment I've made, I've implied that the Native American people can do better and earn and give respect at a higher level. It makes me upset that they don't.
by fredo on 5/13/2011 @ 9:52am
|It's hard for me to tell if native american people are speaking with one voice or with many different voices.
Do they want sovereign nations populated with natives of 100% blood affiliation, partial blood affiliations, assimilation into the american culture, partial assimilation, full entitlements for some or all tribal members, a parasitic relationship with the government, more independence, less independence, return to traditional lifestyles, embrace of modern lifestyles?
And here's a second area of inquiry as suggested by Jesse. When native american's recieve money or services from the government or the public at large do they owe anything back, and I'm not talking about funding a fireworks display or a daffodil parade float? Would it be asking too much for them to practice those virtues which we have always been lead to believe that they hold dear? Isn't keeping billboards off the tribal land a way to demonstrate a love for the natural world?
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 5/13/2011 @ 9:56am
|Yeah, the stretch of freeway through Fife is a true and natural wonder. Why don't we protect the beauty of this area and force the Tribe to take down these electronic billboards?|
by fredo on 5/13/2011 @ 10:04am
|The billboards in fife block our views of the mountains, the trees, the sky, the clouds, the birds. I would call those true and natural wonders, wouldn't you? And who benefits from the billboards? Oh that would be the miscreants who get excited about a reunion of a Coasters copy-band, the opportunity to play yet another hand of "texas hold'em" or the chance to gorge on the 19.99 all-u-ken-eat" buffet. I'll bet the puyallups are saving a seat for you, Crenshaw!|

So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
