Live Blog ~ Running the Red Hot Gauntlet

Fellow Tacoman and CLAW member, and illustrator extraordinaire (just check out that awesome banner above!) Stowe and I will put our very lives on the line tonight and run "The Gauntlet". What is this challenge of which you speak, you may wonder? It's a straight up, at the bar, no bathroom breaks test of will against The Red Hot's nine(!) signature dogs. Stowe's recently birthday and my stomach-stretching food binge in New Orleans make this the perfect chance to get our names up on the plaque on their wall and into a small slice of Tacoma history.
Follow along my updates in the comments below and keep your eyes here for photos and possibly even live video of the main event around 5:30pm tonight. Wish us luck!
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 9:01am | My prep today includes a lunch of only fruit and veg, drinking at least 3 bottles of water (where I normally drink one) during the work day to help stretch things out (without filing me up with anything other than empty calories), and a pro-biotic or two. :) |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 9:42am | And the first bottle of water is chugged! Gotta be at least a liter or maybe a little more per bottle. |
by Thorax O'Tool on 2/1/2010 @ 10:07am | this is more intense than the game-day prep I did when I went to State for Cross Country in 1999. |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 10:24am | Water floweth through me with great haste! |
by beerandhotdogs on 2/1/2010 @ 10:44am | Hey Kev, it's actually 10 hot dogs, and two of them have two dogs a piece in them. So 3 pounds of all-beef wiener await you patiently. We've filled the plaque sans one name, so we're switching to a new eating feat this year. Stowe was to be the last attempt, but I cannot deny you dear sir! I would call ahead and warn the staff, tonight is a tapping event with New Belgium & their new Ranger IPA. Good luck!

by Thorax O'Tool on 2/1/2010 @ 11:01am | Ugh.... 3lbs of meat?
no offense, but that sounds gross. |
by Altered Chords on 2/1/2010 @ 11:14am | There's actual meat in hot dogs? |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 12:04pm | C@TRH: So what's number 10? I count 9 on the menu. I knew the Tideflats has two dogs in it but which one is missing? We'll make sure to call ahead. Can't wait! |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 12:32pm | Time for my all fruit and veg lunch and I'm just about half way through my second bottle of water. (and about to embark on my fifth trip to water the urinal cake!) |
by Thorax O'Tool on 2/1/2010 @ 12:37pm | 20 oz bottle? You should be drinking 4 of those a day anyway. |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 12:46pm | Think it's about that. I go through one a day usually. So what kind of competition eating tips do folks have? I've heard the "soak the buns" one but won't be doing that since I kinda' want to enjoy the dogs. Any others of note? |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 1:32pm | ALERT: Due to a tapping party going down tonight the status of our Gauntlet run is in question. :( Owner Chris will have the final say but, to stay cool with employees, we won't push it on what will likely already be a busy night. Stay tuned... |
by Altered Chords on 2/1/2010 @ 1:57pm | I don't have an eating tip but I recommend 45 min of pumping Iron or 45 min - 1 hour of running this afternoon.
You'll be famished |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 2:32pm | Just finished my fruit/veg lunch and, good news, I'm still hungry! Plus, this just in: we're on for running the Gauntlet tonight! C@TRH said via email as long as it's not crazy for the event tonight they'll do it. Cross your fingers for us! Plus, plus, check this sweet banner out Stowe made for the occasion: ![]() |
by Thorax O'Tool on 2/1/2010 @ 2:58pm | Wicked banner.
As for eating contest tips, I only have one: Don't. But I think that boat has sailed ;) |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 4:32pm | Stopped drinking water an hour or so ago to allow time for my stomach/bladder to empty itself out. So far so good! Nursing a healthy(?) hunger (e.g. not starving) and darn if I don't crave me some serious salt/savory stuff.
Once we're at The Red Hot we'll attempt to hook up a live video feed of the event. More to come! |
by Non Sequitur on 2/1/2010 @ 4:49pm | If you can eat 10, you graduate to boy.
If you wanna be a man, son you have to eat 15 |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 5:42pm | We're here! Live video coming right up (and hopefully so are the dogs -- on the bar, not from our mouths). |
by Joel 413 on 2/1/2010 @ 6:19pm | Watching you live! |
by NineInchNachos on 2/1/2010 @ 6:23pm | gross! but awesome!! |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 6:34pm | Pretty tasty overall except for all the damn onions! As I just told Joel, the chewing is easy, it's swallowing that's the prob. Still on dog #5! |
by Joel 413 on 2/1/2010 @ 6:45pm | We're commenting in the chat room of the stream! But, you are taking 3 minutes per bite. |
by Joel 413 on 2/1/2010 @ 6:46pm | 6:42 jilarson: I did too, the way he picked up the basket
6:42 reichugo: hes drying out 6:43 reichugo: DRINK WATER KEVIN 6:44 WaywardScutrGrl: He has been eating that damn dog for 20 minutes 6:44 jilarson: 3 minutes a bite! 6:44 jilarson: I'm timing them! 6:44 WaywardScutrGrl: And little bites at that! 6:45 WaywardScutrGrl: Quit talking and eat! 6:45 jilarson: pff, the screen went to sleep. 6:45 WaywardScutrGrl: Reload, reload 6:46 jilarson: He's checking his blog. 6:46 jilarson: luckily I had that open in the other window |
by Joel 413 on 2/1/2010 @ 7:17pm | Nice job you guys. That was fun to watch. Made sitting here @ work watching the progress bar much more enjoyable. |
by seejane on 2/1/2010 @ 7:25pm | I was hoping it was a gauntlet of beer. |
by jamesstoweart on 2/1/2010 @ 8:10pm | God... so sick...
But so glad I did it. Made it to the 8th Hot Dog before the nausea took over and I had to throw in the towel. Thanks to everyone for your support and a special thanks to Kevin for sloggin through all those dogs right along with me. You are the best hot dog eating contest wingman ever! |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 8:21pm | Was going to say the same of you, Mr. Stowe! I had a blast and thanks to everyone who tuned in! I got through five dogs and managed a porter after. Completely stuffed but not feeling sick really. Wow. One heck of a challenge and I'm honored to have been one of the last two ever to do it since Chris @ TRH is retiring the challenge.
Time to sit and do nothing. :) |
by beerandhotdogs on 2/1/2010 @ 9:27pm | Great effort fellas. The Champ is John Hoff with a time of 14 minutes and 52 seconds. INSANE. Our new challenge will be in place by Springtime: "The Dirty Dozen".
C@TRH |
by Non Sequitur on 2/1/2010 @ 9:56pm | under 15 min?
Truly a God of Gluttony is among us! |
by KevinFreitas on 2/1/2010 @ 10:39pm | A couple more post-Gauntlet attempt observations:
- you know your breath is bad when you can still vividly taste onions while brushing your teeth - after 5 dogs and a pint of porter I gained 4 lbs (exact same attire before as after) |
by Thorax O'Tool on 2/2/2010 @ 1:18am | *barf* |
by KevinFreitas on 2/2/2010 @ 6:51am | Doing well this morning thought! Felt pretty good by the time I went to sleep last night. Not something I'd do every day for sure but it was a fun experience to give the Gauntlet a try. |

About
Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.
So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
