A huge thanks to Halley of Tacoma KOMO fame for recording this for all to hear.

Thanks for posting Kevin!

I liked the part where she said basically that "good enough" isn't great. We want great... or as she said... "extra." Raising the bar!

How do you get this thing to play?

by fredo on 1/30/2012 @ 10:46pm
I finally got the device to play. Just keep clicking on things and it will probably play for you too!

Having said that I'm not sure there is anything worth listening to there.

The mayor just listed a few things going on around town and named a few new players in town, then finished off her speech with some incoherent pep talk about adding something extra to whatever you used to do "good enough."

I'm a little surprised that the Mayor didn't mention that her administration had run the city budget into a $32,000,000 hole and caused general obligation bonds issued by the city to be downgraded. Is this supposed to be an example of the "extra" that we are all supposed to strive toward?

My extra is awesome.

We have a tax system based on sales dollars generated which is probably the most volatile of any system. How have sales been... anywhere is America?

Besides, the economy tanked in 2007 and this is the first year there's been budget issues? I'd say that is someone in the budget department doing an awesome job.

"Extra"? Like branding all members of political parties other than your own "racist"? Sorry- I don't play that, Ms. Mayor.

Vote "Monarchist" in 2012 and return these wayward colonies back to the loving arms of the commonwealth.

maybe she means like movie extras. Downtown tacoma could hire some extras to mill about... maybe during tourist season?

by KevinFreitas on 1/31/2012 @ 10:44am
Extra like moving jobs like the City's website extra far away to Toronto, Canada.

by The Jinxmedic on 1/31/2012 @ 11:13am
"Extras" like "extra" surface parking lots where historic buildings once stood? We're going to have another one of those soon, if the city doesn't do something to eminent domain Old City Hall and force repairs.

by cisserosmiley on 1/31/2012 @ 12:01pm
Extra like paying another guy a quarter million bucks a year, that makes a person a "1%'er" in Tacoma

by fredo on 1/31/2012 @ 1:10pm
"I'd say that is someone in the budget department doing an awesome job." jesse

"awesome" probably isn't the word that would jump to most people's minds. Well if the city is doing an awesome job with the budget then you must be ecstatic with the state legislatures job. The budget deficit there is in the billions with a B.

by fredo on 1/31/2012 @ 1:21pm
What happened to the "culture of yes?" Maybe that didn't work so now we have the "culture of extras."

by Jesse on 1/31/2012 @ 1:47pm
2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 Tacoma had little budget issues during a great depression. It took four years to get into this budget crisis after revenues dropped like a rock. So yes, I'd say that'sa an awesome job someone has done working with the budget.

Could your family survive, without a loss of lifestyle, a five year long economic crisis? That's basically what the city has done.

by fredo on 1/31/2012 @ 2:17pm
revenues haven't "dropped like a rock." The city manager warned the council in 2009 that city revenues (like those of other cities around the country) were not hitting projections, so they were on constructive notice that spending patterns could not be sustained. Nevertheless, they gave all the city employees raises and spent down our reserve account. There's been a shameful disregard for the financial stability of our city. But Jesse you'll be happy to learn that the projected budget shortfall for the next biennium is expected to be in the range of $70M. Happy days are here again. An "extra" budget shortfall compliments of Marilyn Strickland.

This just in:

In the future any Big Box stores which wish to open in Tacoma and provide EXTRA employment to our unemployed folks, and provide EXTRA tax funds for our insolvent city treasury, and provide EXTRA product offerings for our consumers will have to endure EXTRA red tape.

The culture of YES is officially dead.

Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.

So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
