My First Night Itinerary

Choosing what to do with such an impressive line up of entertainment for this year's First Night can be difficult. Here's my itinerary for the evening with a couple recommendations for groups I saw last year.

What I have to see:

Angela Jossey
Pythian Temple

The Little Brothers
Sanford & Son Upper Stage (off Broadway)

Hi Jack: A Performance Spectacle
Between 7th and 9th on Broadway

What I'll miss (but you shouldn't):

Pierce Transit Main Stage

Over The Water Hurdy Gurdy Association
Pythian Temple

So what are your plans for First Night this New Years Eve? Whatever the case, have a happy and fulfilling New Year! See you in 2009!

KF-Good reminder. Hope the weather doesn't put a damper on the event.

Fredo's wish for 2009? More spiritied discussions on feedTacoma regarding all things Tacoma! And a special thanks to you, Kevin for putting so much effort into the site. It's nothing short of brilliant.

Thanks Fredo -- flattery will get you everywhere. ;)

Just added a video above I put together from last year's First Night to further urge everyone to come by tonight.

Happy New Years

Thanks for the video.

I was there and it was so AWESOME!

If any of you are out at First Night, come on down to my shop and say hello.

I'm inside Sanford and Son on the Middle Floor.

I'll be out and about at 5:45-6:45 to see Deborah Page and Paul Uhl at the Pierce Transit Main Stage.

I gotta go now and pack up my friend Captain Morgan. YUM!

Cheers to you ALL!

I wish I could make it to the mid-level, and I know Page/Uhl will be a memorable show. We'll have some great acts at the Pythian Temple where I'll be present, and I hope you FT friends will come up and say hello and ask questions about the building if you'd like.

I'm going to be introducing Voxxy Vallejo at 7:30 at the Sanford and Son downstairs stage. Wish me luck!

Beyond that, the plan is to do whatever the kids can handle.

I'll be at the Uncle Bonsai show at the Pythian. 10:30. Should be amazing.

(Spud gun???)
I hope you got into Bonsai, Kenny. Many were turned away after capacity was reached, and there was little turnover. Amazing work by the FN organizers, stage managers, sound, volunteers, community-service folk, etc, some of whom edured long hours of cold and wet conditions. It was nice seeing so many people from this blog, including Hanan, KF, Beautiful Angle Lance, Angela, and making some wonderful new acuaintances from Bellinghan, to Tacoma(KD), to Longview.

So did anyone get a photo of the Hi Jack dancing zebras? Since I was one of them I couldn't snap any myself and I'd love to get a copy. Thanks and Happy New Year!

We missed Hi Jack. Didn't know you were going to be a dancing zebra!

What IS on your head in your icon? It's freaking me out.

I am dying to see your pictures from last night.

by KevinFreitas on 1/1/2009 @ 10:12am
Haha, my avatar pic is me with a beanie lizard on my head. It's a toy, I swear.

Going through my pics now. Didn't stay the whole night but got a few fun ones. Stay tuned...

I missed that part of the show. DARN IT!
Was helping customers in my shop.

I did bring my own recycled instruments and my daughter and I danced for a while. Then I had to leave. It was at the beginning of Hi Jack.

Sterling loved Hi Jack. She loved the cans. Went right for a stick/branch and started hitting them.

FirstNight was a BLAST!

Oh! and Paul Uhl asked Deborah Page to marry him on stage. It was very sweet. She said "yes".

Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just tossed my pics from the night up. Enjoy!

• Motopony was terrific.

• Performing pigs were a bit underwhelming. Expectations were overly inflated.

• Hurdy gurdy was very interesting, for about 10 minutes.

• Global Heat was pretty good but started SOO late. (Not their fault.)

• Fireworks seemed a bit weak at first, and then cigar and cigarette smoke nauseated my pregnant wife (and me) enough to drive us away before they really got going. Even outside, smoking in a crowd is just so uncool.

Overall, good times -- well worth the visit. Fun to see the Rialto, Pantages, and Pythian all on one day. (And Theater on the Square, which really isn't much to write home about.)

[Sorry about bumping this thread again.]
We can arrange for you to see the Pythian many, many times, NSHscott! I stepped outside the door of Pythian Temple to see the fireworks, and standing right there was Baby Gramps. Gramps wasn't performing, but came to First Night to see Zazou. But Gramps is ready to play Tacoma again. The Lodge learns more with each event, and will probably host more public events in 2009. As funds and time allow, some more effort will be put into repairing some of the doors, more improvements in the restroom situation and some green room, as well as some efforts to improve the sound for concerts. I also thought the FN fireworks were a bit flat, but maybe that's because last year was the first one in a while and seems more memorable. I hope the event did well. Bennet, Dale, and everyone else worked so hard, and I know a #1 priority is that everyone gets paid. First Night Tacoma is as good as any such event anywhere else. I just wish all those people out and about would continue to enjoy downtown Tacoma all the other days of the year.

Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.

So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
