National Guard Leaving Historic Armory

According to the TNT the National Guard is leaving their historic armory building on Yakima. I suppose this explains why Dockyard Derby Dame practices were booted from there but I'd love to see them back along with whatever other tenants might make good use of that space. How would you like to see it used?

great who will protect Tacoma from the Chinese should they ever build nukes?

by The Jinxmedic on 11/9/2011 @ 8:54am
Turn it over to the other component of the Washington Military Department, the Washington State Guard (WSG) for use as an...

...armory.

TACOMA should have its own Militia

by The Jinxmedic on 11/9/2011 @ 9:12am
Tacoma once had its own militia, as did the Knights of Pythias (really!)

A new militia? Hmmm.... Greatcoats, Moisin-Nagants, and really tall ushankas for everybody!

This one from @Jesse via Facebook: "Permanent farmers market!!!"

I'd love to see more events in there like concerts and DyDD bouts.

by thriceallamerican on 11/9/2011 @ 9:45am
Civic space ALA Seattle's Town Hall. Lectures, concerts, etc., Incl. roller derby of course.

by NineInchNachos on 11/9/2011 @ 9:51am
that would be awesome

I love Jesse's farmerís market idea!! Years ago there was talk o turn a warehouse underneath the Murray Morgan into that. But then the city tore it down.

by The Jinxmedic on 11/9/2011 @ 9:55am
Well, that is one of the city's favorite things to do...

by Jesse on 11/9/2011 @ 10:18am
Detroit actually has a series of old brick structures they turned into Farmer's Markets. They have one in each sector of the city. I'd look for a link but I'm mobile right now. I saw it in my Urban Farm magazine March/April 2011 edition.

lets make it happen! Organize! Organize!

by low bar on 11/9/2011 @ 10:26am
decide tacoma's regulation by roller derby. strap skates to them council members. i see another tacomic. LIARS

by NineInchNachos on 11/9/2011 @ 11:37am
give the derby dames guns, have them go on patrols... insta-militia !

by The Jinxmedic on 11/9/2011 @ 11:50am
But they could only patrol on smooth, flat surfaces...

by low bar on 11/9/2011 @ 12:20pm
Well then first order of business fix all potholes. TPD goes to roller skate hood watch system. Old armory looks perfect for a castle of impending death by city council derby debate. All that is needed are chroma key lightning strikes. Makes me want to smoke all of this merryjane and watch Solarbabies

by NineInchNachos on 11/9/2011 @ 12:25pm
maybe the MINT could buy it.

by NineInchNachos on 11/9/2011 @ 12:29pm
how zombie proof is that place?

by The Jinxmedic on 11/9/2011 @ 12:33pm
Old-school armories were designed to be defensible, which is why many have the appearance of castles. I would say that with enough defenders, it would hold up well during the onset of the ZOMBI3 AP0CALYPS3...

by NineInchNachos on 11/9/2011 @ 12:36pm
National Guard can buy the old lowes. Bet it is dry inside.

by The Jinxmedic on 11/9/2011 @ 12:53pm
The mint would want to be closer to Pacific Avenue.

Have they thought about a couple horseback police officers for downtown? The armory could house that probably pretty easily.

by low bar on 11/9/2011 @ 6:50pm
excellent thinking. the horse crap could fill in the potholes.

by Jesse on 11/9/2011 @ 6:59pm
YES!!!!

by Jesse on 11/12/2011 @ 4:38pm
What about luring a winery to the Armory?

WalMart Co-op store. workers don't get paychecks they just get credit for good deals on store merchandise. Make sure there are some Washington made items in the store to make lowbar happy.

by Jesse on 11/13/2011 @ 9:35am
Space Elevator... MUSEUM!!

by NineInchNachos on 11/13/2011 @ 10:07pm
most of historic downtown could be ground up and made into the concrete ballast weights for the space elevator. It's already started!

by Jake on 11/23/2012 @ 3:42pm
The armory has been surplussed by the state. Asking price is $1,000,000. Proposals to purchase were due by 11/16/12. Wonder if there were any takers?

About

Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.

So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
