News of the 6th Ave. Kind

Just enjoyed a late breakfast on my day off with my buddy Stowe and his daughter on 6th Ave. and happened upon these tidbits I thought I'd share.

  • Bombay Bistro is not just gone (when did they close?) but under serious internal renovation. Anyone know what's going in there at 6th and Stevens?

  • Caffe Dei will soon feature vegan cupcake versions of some of their fabulous (or so I'm told, I don't drink coffee) concoctions from the new cupcakery down the street.

  • Buck Naked Donuts is going in on the corner where the former Pinwheel Herban Cafe was and promises to be our own little Voodoo right here in Tacoma.

What else is going on along 6th Ave?

I think it was last Saturday that I notice all the kitchen equipment being hauled out of the former Bombay Bistro....Looking forward to what will be there next.

In other news, we seem to be inundated with cupcakes here in Tacoma. Two more cupcake shops were reported in the TNT diner blog. blog.thenewstribune.com/tntdiner

'2 to the 3rd Power' - opening near PLU also claims to be voodoo-ish.

Psst ... there are no cupcake shops in gig harbor. A gold mine.

Other 6th ave news....the owners of O'malley's will be opening up a pizza place where sluggo music used to be.

Heard a while ago at the 7-11 at 6th & Alder that 7-11 owns the Bombay Bistro property and is going to open a store there. Not sure if this is true.

Jenyum is right. The building was sold in April and there is a liquor license application for a 7-11 at that location.

Also looks like there will be one going into the building on the NW corner of 38th & Pine (the building with Subway) and another down the street on the SE corner of South Tacoma Way and Pine Street.

May as well pile on that the complete teardown/buildup at 6th & Sprague will be a Walgreens. I'm somewhat ambivalent about that news (can't decide if that's actually an improvement over what was there), but new construction does mean new investment which is is encouraging.

I heard you can actually buy a 7-11 in Texas for $30k. They make the owners usually over six figures.

Did I see a cupcake shop about to open on sixth too???

Everyone keeps mentioning Voo-Doo donuts as a comparison to Bare Naked Donuts as the rumor is the owner of Bare Naked is an original owner of Voo-Doo. I don't see why a penis shaped donuts, like at Voo-Doo, can make a place that frickin' cool. Could someone please explain?

the property at 4328 is also zoned for a gas station and i saw them drilling holes in the front area yesterday so probably just like 6th n alder with gas pumps too. @jesse, the new burning cupcakes right next to the soon to be 7-11 is also a great wedding baker and maker of other catering goodies, their sit down cupcake showroom is new, but they have been cookin for a while.

I think the Walgreens will be as good as a national-chain store can be in that location. Sadly there hadn't been any life there in years.

Personally, I don't care all that much for cupcakes (or cake) for that matter. Donuts can be good, as proven by Pao's and LeDonut.

What I'd much rather see is a real bakery with great breads and real water bagels. Yeah, I am 100% capable of making my own but that doesn't mean I always want to or have the time.

the lady that owns the place said they will have bread in the future. they have a commissary kitchen and some other folks are using it to make their other stuff. i would check back with these guys in a little bit for bread and other stuff. i wish pao's would move closer.

Pao's would be great in the empty teriyaki joint.

that's funny because it was a wintchel's doughnuts before

Update re: 7-11 at the corner of 6th & Stevens from Joel via Facebook:

"It's been gone for over a week, but the 7-11 on 6th and Stevens vanished overnight. One day it was there, and the next it was gone, all signage removed, windows covered, GONE! And It was open maybe a little more than 1-year. what happened? 7-11 opened half a dozen stores in 2011 and now the new ones are closing?"

Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.

So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
