Show Local

Now that Christmas and the "giving" part of the holidays are over I thought it might be nice to reflect a bit. With all the talk among the local blogosphere about "Go Local" now's the time to represent and "Show Local". That's right. What'd you give or get from a local shop for the holidays? Let's give credit to those retailers here in town where we spent our hard earned dollars to express our care in this time of giving. You get double points if something you gave or got was also made in the area.

Here's a list for Sarah and I:

So, how 'bout you? Lay down your "Show Local" list in the comments below.

I found some great gifts for my family at BKB during the art walk last week. I had never been there before, what great stuff.

Dang, well done Jen and NIN! It's fun to see just how much variety does exist around town when you go (and show) local.

So who else gave or got from a local retailer this Christmas? I know the four of us weren't the only ones.

At least a partial list of local places where our household bought people or each other gifts: Dragonfly, UW Bookstore, BKB, WSHM Gift Shop, Country Girl Gardens/Underground Green, 7 Muses, Pacific Northwest Shop, Harp & Shamrock, Urban Gourmet, Tacoma Boys, Forza Coffee (sorta local), Watson's Nursery, Ted Brown Music, My Petite Pea...maybe more?

We also supported a few larger retailers that at least have local roots: REI, Amazon.com.

Several trips to Fred Meyer, which used to be Oregon-based before they sold out to Kroger...

And in the unfortunate-but-sort-of-necessary category, at least one trip to Best Buy.

So our hands aren't completely clean (we did better on the all-local front last year), but we did an OK job.

We did okay:
Museum of Glass small vase and Gift Card
Robi's Camera- GC
CD's from Buzzards
Yarn from the Opera Alley Yarn Shop
Earrings from Jasminka
King's Books GC
Calendars from NW printers
Northwest Wines
and REI

We've been also spreading money around to restaurants and events.
Yeah Christmas

Pacific NW Shop Shop - Proctor

I got gift certificates to Primo and The Grand. Also a $50 bill which all went to Comic Book Ink (50% off all the paperback and hardcover collections... how could I not?)

CBI also constituted a bit of my shopping, as I picked up Absolute Sandman Volume 2 for my brother there.

All told, I really didn't do much shopping or receiving, local or otherwise.

Ya know, they say Christmas isn't ALL about gifts...

by KevinFreitas on 12/27/2007 @ 6:31pm
AP: It certainly isn't but if the mood strikes, going local is a good way to do it.

by izenmania on 12/27/2007 @ 8:43pm
Nope. Chrismas is about FOOD.

by ensie on 12/28/2007 @ 10:22am
In that case, I think we made everything for our Christmas dinner from scratch, except our ham, which came from Costco, which is locally based.

Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.

So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
