As of today, south downtown Tacoma is going to get interesting. If everything's gone to plan Pacific Ave. from S. 25th to 27th streets is now closed for the next 11 months. This shit, as they say, just got real. Here's the detour/battlefield map:
The new bypass off South Tacoma Way and onto 27th towards the northbound I-5 on-ramp is open for business but pay close attention all around this area because there are new lane lines and new stoplights at most effected intersections. Even the blinky yellow/red there on Commerce and 25th is now a full red-yellow-green.
If you're coming from the south end I recommend taking 38th to either I-705 then exit off at 21st downtown or going left on 38th and take Thompson over I-5 where it turns into Yakima. You could also take "G" which parallels Thompson and turns instead into Tacoma Ave. Other good alternates as I see them would be using Dock Street to get you over toward the Dome area -- possibly even getting on I-5 over at Portland Ave. rather than anywhere around Pacific.
Anyway, drive safe and, if you're in this area (around our office at 28th and Pacific), please Pac (get it?) your patience.

|Here's what the intersection of 27th and Pacific looked like about 8:20am this morning:|
No real hang-ups at all which is great news! I rode my bike to work and coming up off Dock Street toward the Dome there was a little more traffic but nothing major.
If you've been through the area let everyone know your experience in the comments here!

|this could end up being very ironic...tacoma has never been the same since this very intersection was THE highway from seattle to tacoma to olympia. I5 being elevated and to the south kept folks from driving through dt as easy. maybe this new construction at this very intersection will bring new life...|

|Anyone want to start a pool for how soon we'll see someone fly down the hill on Pacific and plow right through that roadblock?
I've already got a nickname picked out: Pacific Ave Rooter
Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.
So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
