After my first meeting with some central neighborhood folks against Clear Channel's abuse of Tacoma via it's blighted billboards I decided to put my web development skills to use for the cause. Ladies and gentlemen I give you the
Instead of merely asking people to email the City about offending billboards around town we wanted to do two things. First, we wanted to make it easy for folks to know exactly what counts as violations of Tacoma's sign code so we know what we're reporting are indeed local laws being broken by Clear Channel. Second, we wanted to urge government accountability and transparency on the issue by keeping our own database of these offenses so our emails don't just go into a black hole somewhere in the City's system.
You can fill the form out anytime on your computer or, if you see an offending billboard while out and about, pull it up on your mobile device and submit your report even using it's GPS for a location. Once you send the form we send an email with all the info to the City and will soon make a spreadsheet export of the data (minus address and last name) for anyone to use to demand accountability.
Bottom line, head to FeedTacoma.com/billboards anytime, save the app to your mobile device home screen, and tell your friends so we can collectively tell Tacoma and Clear Channel to clean up these advertising blightsicles all over town.

|brilliant Kevin. your billboard violation reporting app is really a code violation reporting app which would be of interest to people in many localities beyond Tacoma. get this thing patented immediately.|
Incidentally, my friend is a patent attorney. If you'd like his phone number get a hold of me.

|Good lord. That's brilliant. Seriously!
I'll download it now.

|Awesome awesome work Kevin! I would recommend you to be an Action Figure with RR but you already are one!
In a month or so we should check to make sure the city is receiving the reports of blight...and hopefully doing something about them.

|Yeah, once I'm clear of my first barbershop quartet competition this weekend I'll make the report data available as a map and spreadsheet so we can all keep track of how the City's doing enforcing it's codes.|

|is there a way to send a camera phone pic too?|
by KevinFreitas on 3/28/2012 @ 8:46am
|Nope -- would love to but that would mean making the jump to an app store app to access the camera and that's a massive undertaking. Having the City's own violating conditions and our now more easily submitted volume of complaints should be more than enough to prompt action from the City.|

|Btw folks, if you want to try out the new app, there is a blighted billboard I just drove by 60 feet from Tacoma City Hall.|

|1) What does "not clear/free of debris" mean?
2) What does one check if the front of the billboard is peeling off?

|The Tacoma Billboard Report sounds like it should be something read aloud by John Keister (of Almost Live!).|
BTW, I like it.

by NineInchNachos on 3/28/2012 @ 6:24pm
|the what now?|
by KevinFreitas on 3/28/2012 @ 6:29pm
|Oh, the vinyl wraps that actually just get strapped over the top of the ad space and frame? Yeah, those seem to be the ones that keep blowing apart in the wind.|
by cisserosmiley on 3/28/2012 @ 6:46pm
|The billboard across from us is normally kept up and well purchased by banks and fast food, but now there is a vinyl banner over it. Bizarre.|

|@troysworktable Keister Keister Keister Keister!
Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.
So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
Hey Clear Channel, Clean Up Your Crap!
