Video ~ Tacoma Mall power problems

The mall has it all... except power

At about 3:30 this afternoon and right as we were getting ready to check out at JC Penny's the lights went dark. Shoppers let out a surprised yelp or gasp but a second or two later generators kicked in. We put our stuff on hold and wandered the Tacoma Mall to see if things would return to normal. Turns out the south half of the building was dark while the north half had no problems at all. We were able to hit up Macy's for some sales and the cashiers were enjoying the fact that everyone was migrating toward them mostly because they had power and working cash registers. Most stores closed their security gates by the time we left and TPU was on the scene.

The parking lot was packed when we arrived but half empty due to this problem. I wonder if retailers can sue for lost business (especially since it seems the holiday shopping rush is on)? Just one more reason to skip the mall and go local this time of year.

True. Fortunately, there are more and more choices of iitems downtown or in the neighborhood stores. The food is certainly better downtown, but there is still so little clothing (thought I did buy a jacket from Urban Xchange the other day)

Looks like the protestors finally found their mark:

Power outage closes parts of Tacoma Mall
The News Tribune
Published: November 17th, 2007 05:52 PM

A power outage affecting parts of the Tacoma Mall shut down several deparment stores Saturday including Nordstrom and J.C. Penney and small retailers in the shopping center.

J.C. Penney sales manager Donna Larson said power went out at about 3:30 p.m. and her store closed about 45 minutes later.

Macy's remained open but customers had no access to the rest of the mall.

Tacoma Police and Fire departments were working to clear the mall Saturday evening.

A great video, but my burning question is: Did I see a woman in full-on flannel pj's in your video?

Glad to see go local has their website up.

Do the reasons to go local load up for you? I just get a blank tab. (PDFs are evil.)

Cool. I even found the Go Local site on the internets:

Do you see anything here, Erik?

I just get a blank tab.

Metro: Haha, I noticed that too. Maybe it's the analog to shopping online in your PJs.

jen: Yup, PDF goodness. Sigh...

Well, I guess I just don't get to know the reasons to go local, because it doesn't load for me in either browser.

Never mind, got it now. It took about 3 minutes to load.

Yes, it appears to work now.

You have a good point though in your series of posts, people are often impatient to wait for a huge download.

They should have kept it a smaller file size. Instead they made their front page a huge PDF document! A big mistake. Oh well.

Although I have another home on the web I thought it might be nice to lead by example a bit and put this blog system up to the test myself.

So far, so good... Funny how I build web tools for other people that are far better than the one's I have setup over on KFnet.
