Rampart Owner Steve Craig Found Dead

One of the artists from Rampart Gallery just called me to say that Steve Craig, owner of Rampart, was found dead (NOT MURDERED as I stupidly posted before) in his home.

Members and friends of Rampart are planning a get together outside the building tomorrow during ArtWalk.  I don't know the time yet, but if anyone's interested, I'll post as soon as I find out.

I was a member of Rampart for 3 years and just left back in September.  Steve was a great contributer to the Tacoma art community and will be missed.

That is awful. I don't know anyone by name at Rampart, but have visited many times. My positive vibes go out to everyone who was close to Steve.

What an awful way to lose such a vital member of the Tacoma Art community (before there even was one, on paper.)
Sending all kinds of peace-type, healing vibes to the people mourning his loss deeply.

Sounds like this was a call from one person to another. No other news on this yet.

Our thoughts go out to Steve's friends and family.

Word is that it's natural causes, not homicide. Or at least so says Spew.

ok not a murder. spew has the scoop.

K. I got it wrong. I guess that's what happens when you get info 3rd hand.

But still, the guy was only in his 50s. True he smoked and drank (off and on), but I would never have thought he had one foot in the grave.

Shame.

Shame indeed. Now I'm wondering what's to become of rampart and his loft...

Was the the owner of that entire space or were there partners who can keep it active?

by Mandiferous on 2/20/2008 @ 3:42pm
As far as I know, he rented the majority of the building and was the sole proprietor of Rampart.

Artists in the gallery paid "membership dues" of about $20 a month (when they paid at all) which wouldn't be nearly enough to keep it open. Whenever we had meetings or ArtWalk events, Steve used to bitch about how much it cost to heat the building per hour.

I'm assuming that the space will be leased out to someone else eventually.

I only ask because I've long thought that was a cool area, and might be interested in it. Though I bet it would be mucho-expensive.

Steve hosted the first Monkey Party. We will miss him..................................

I'm never gonna live that murdered thing down, am I?

From now on, I solemnly swear to leave the reporting up to the reporters and only blog about things that have no real social relevance (they just amuse me).

Again, sorry sorry sorry.

by izenmania on 2/25/2008 @ 1:14pm
Well, you weren't the only one. When Spew talked to Alan Gorusch it sounded like he had initially heard that it was murder, too (and not from here).

Definitely, don't be discouraged. You did a great service letting people know what was going on. Hearing info and making as much sense of it from your personal experience and/or perspective is where the power of blogging comes in. Those were the facts as you knew them and sometimes that perception is as valuable as anything. Plus, minus that detail, you beat all the local news orgs to the punch. Something to be proud of.

Keep up the fine work Mandiferous!
