Downtown Tacoma vs. the Burj Dubai

Result: The tallest building in the world is going to be crazy tall...

Just for fun, I grabbed the height of our two tallest highrises downtown and added it to a graph comparing various buildings to the planned height of the Burj Dubai. Just for kicks, have a look:

800m is just insane!!

Also, is it me, or does the Burj Dubai approach the status of "arcology" as defined by Sim City 2000? ;-)

Very funny. Tacoma is almost there!

Here's hoping someone gives Haub a reason to build a new highrise in this town someday...

I'm heading to something next Tues. on the 75th(!) floor of the Columbia Bank tower in Seattle. I like my buildings short and stout. Like my beer (at least the stout part anyway).

At this point, 150m would be OK with me.

But you forgot the ICC in Hong Kong (483m), the SWFC in Shanghai (494m) and the Shanghai Tower (632m).

And for Kevin: The Columbia Bank Tower is the tallest building west of the Mississippi in total number of stories, second tallest in total height (US Bank Center in LA is 1036' tall) but not even in the top 60 tallest buildings in the world.

Are we sure it's the Columbia *Bank* building (observing that Columbia Bank is headquartered in Tacoma)?

by L.S.Erhardt on 10/8/2009 @ 8:54pm
Yeah, that is it's name. The Bank part may indeed be a common misconception

Something had BETTER go on that Luzon block, like soon.

by L.S.Erhardt on 10/9/2009 @ 9:26pm
They already have the dump trucks filled with asphalt lined up and ready to go, Jinx...

Unfortunately, their "something" is 10,000 sq feet of parking for DaVita.

Hmmm.... Wait a minuet here. Didn't the city promise DaVita more "convenient parking" if they stayed in Downtown?

In all fairness, the reason the building was torn down in the first place was because nobody came forward with the funds to restore it and build new office space/retail. No reason to expect anything would change a couple weeks later.

I just hope the city makes it a priority to fill the massive crater we now have downtown between the footprint of the Luzon block and the Haub site across the street. This could prove very devastating for downtown if we don't fill that in at the next economic opportunity.

I say we fill it, regardless of the City or Ginz's desires.

I propose we construct a plywood replica of the Luzon, at 1/10 scale (approximately 8' tall by 3' wide by 10' deep) and put it in the lot on one dark October Night... weighing it down with 1,000 lbs of concrete for non-ease of removal.
