A Mixed-Use Future for 24th & Pacific?
Full of potential - will it be realized?
Driving by after work last week, Ashley and I saw a new sign being hung across the long-boarded up building at 24th and Pacific. I've always found this to be a building just begging for attention from anyone with some cash and a vision. It looks like it may have found just that. I can't help but let my imagination run wild with the potential for this corner - with so much visibility from two arterial streets and just a block between it and a LINK stop, it would be extremely difficult for any storefront business to fail here.

That corner suffers from a lot of crime issues, which caused problems for Neeners, so it probably shouldn't be a bar or anything. Whatever it is, I hope it succeeds. The more small businesses in that area the better. |

by Nick on 5/12/2008 @ 10:34am | I know which bookstore you're talking about - wonder if they would be interested in relocating? Who knows what their budget looks like, but I'll bet they'd have 10x the number of daily customers they have now. |
by KevinFreitas on 5/12/2008 @ 10:35am | Something like NPCC out by PLU would be nice. Books, coffee, beer, food, and music. It'd be nice to have a spot right near work to use for less formal meetings. |

by Jake on 5/12/2008 @ 11:35am | I hope they do a good job on the outside. The building needs some facade restoration work. |
by NSHDscott on 5/12/2008 @ 11:35am | Such a nice-looking building, too. Best of luck to them! |

So many of the corner buildings in downtown have been destroyed or screwed up in Tacoma. This building has some exciting potential. |
by jenyum on 5/12/2008 @ 11:50am | Well, Battlesim is always on the lookout for CQB facilities....just kidding. Not looking for anything in such obvious need of thriving commerce.

by fredo on 5/12/2008 @ 12:28pm | If an attractive use can be made of the old dairy building I think the redevelopment of the corner under discussion will follow. That old dairy building appears to be a sort of art-deco style and we shouldn't tear down any more art-deco architecture. Check out the architecture of Miami Beach or Napier, New Zealand-that's what's possible. |
by Heather on 5/12/2008 @ 12:53pm | I think coffee, sandwiches, books and magazines would be great here because it is so close to a link stop. I've had time to spare downtown (carless) and wanted to grab a magazine or book but couldn't think of anywhere besides the UWT bookstore.
Maybe Kings or The Tacoma Book Center would open a satellite in conjunction with a restauranteer. I can envision a coffee, snack, and magazine window for folks waiting for the next link and an indoor area with a small, possibly rotating, collection of books and eating. Oooh! I just thought of this place in downtown Spokane, Liberty Cafe www.libertycafespokane.com/) and it's partner, Auntie's Bookstore (www.auntiesbooks.com/) Whatever goes in, I agree with Scott, best of luck to them! |
by Nick on 5/12/2008 @ 2:22pm | Makes me wonder what kind of square footage that corner space will have, and whether or not the storefront areas will be split into smaller ones or one large one. Should be interesting . . . |
by Nick on 5/12/2008 @ 2:25pm | The only thing that scares me is it looks like a prime spot for a convenience store. With the lack of eye-level windows on that north wall, I could easily see someone thinking 'that's perfect for aisles and shelves full-o-crap!'
Nothing against convenience stores, I just don't think it would take full advantage of this space (and would certainly not add much value to the area). Ok, no more negative thoughts! I promise! |

I wonder if Downtown counts as a Business District? Or maybe this building falls into the Dome District. |
by izenmania on 5/12/2008 @ 2:48pm | A convenience store there would be an awful idea. I'm sure it would get business, but it would also fall prey to the neighborhood... it's a drug-addled corner, the nearby Jack in the Box seems to have cops showing up at least once a week. Anything that sells alcohol and deals largely in cash is going to be in trouble right there. |
by KevinFreitas on 5/12/2008 @ 2:56pm | Oh gawd, no convenience store on that corner, please! Everything against convenience stores -- that's not what this area of town needs. |
by intacoma on 5/12/2008 @ 3:02pm | Yoda Bong shop![]() ![]() |
by Nick on 5/12/2008 @ 4:16pm | There's just something unsettling about the juxtaposition of Baarsma next to a Yoda bong! |
