Have you reflected upon the certainty of your own death?

In part one of my SPIRITUALITY IN TACOMA series begining with the Tacoma Atheists, Who Knew? post I begged the question: "If natural and SUPERnatural got in a fight who would win?" well if you believe in Dirk Gently's HOLISTIC MODEL of the UNIVERSE then the following RELIGIOUS PROPAGANDA   I found crumpled under my shoe at the ROUTE 57 bus stop will certainly give you pause for thought:

This cover is interesting enough, yet there is a chart in the inside cover that has inspired the following newspaper headline parody:

Amateur Polytheist  Discovers Perverse and Often Baffling Metaphysical Chart in Local Bus Stop

I believe #2 has something to do with masturbation and pizza dough.

I believe in God and Christianity etc.. but this seems like a stretch. Like the guys that come to my door in suits to tell me my faith isn't enough unless I share theirs. ( I think "why - cause God wants me to professionally clean my clothes to talk to my neighbors?") You have to think that this piece was targeted to a group that got it this way. Or that they thought would.

yes. I too am skeptical of the pink brochure I found crumpled and forsaken in my bus stop.

welcome to my blog Catherine!

Well Catherine, God only knows what kind of guys come over to your house. But beyond that, I would suggest that people spend some time studying the distinction between Christianity and cults that say they are Christians. I have talked to Mormons and Jehovah's Witness members and both groups claim to be Christian. One thing that distinguishs Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses is that they have developed a literature that is used to supplement the Bible. For the Christian, the Bible is complete. Nothing is to be added and nothing subtracted.

Secondly, there is a hierarchy of faiths. Hundreds of faiths can all be wrong but they cannot all be right.

I mentioned cults and one of the most pervasive "spirituality" trends that contemporary culture has been subjected to since the 1960's is the so-called New Age movement. It's basically a one-size-fits-all fad. It claims to be superior to Christianity. Its an odd mix of Hinduism and physical science and environmentalism and celebrity gurus that cater to dopey mystical dreamers. And the whole franchise provides income for thousands of people in politics, fashion industry, food industry, therapists of all types, and various sectors of the media including broadcast and print.

I suppose the major appeal of this contemporary spirituality is that it makes the God of the Bible obsolete. Therefore, one can entertain all manners of perversion in the name of tolerance and civil rights and then boast to the world on My Space or whatever that you're into spirituality (whatever the current definition of that is to suit your conscience and your therapist).

Spend a little time to study the distinction between Christian spirituality and pagan sprirituality. One thing to look for: pagan spirituality involves meditation that seeks to empty the mind. Christian spirituality involves meditation that seeks to fill the mind with the word of God.

Is there a more sufficient mind than the mind of God?

I don't know why I thought that was so funny...I'm still laughing here...

Marumaruyopparai, it would be closer to the truth to call me a free-range Christian.
