My Neighbor the Super Walmart, A Bicycle Ride Around Despair

NEVER FORGET Wal-o-caust 2012

Down the street from the closed Martin Luther King JR. Public Library... amid the big medical office buildings. A lone rider cuts the morning dawn, nostrils flared.

Committing acts of civil disobedience...

Nothing on site says anything about walmart. Anything that says walmart has been taped over with white tape. As if the construction workers are embarrassed... or maybe they just don't want to attract night saboteurs?  Yeah right, AS IF!  Earth Liberation Front (ELF) was a passing fad. Nobody cares anymore!  These days the only resistance is just some dude in flip-flops on a bicycle with a sign.

Best Walmart builders in the world! Sierra Construction Company they do great work with help from BCRA

now I have an environmental question for everyone.

See all that loose soil piled up?  I wonder how much lead and arsenic is being allowed to blow off in the wind? Nobody driving the earth movers was wearing respirators... OSHA violation?

Did you know all the dirt in Central Tacoma has 100 years worth of contamination built up in there thanks to the Point Ruston copper smelter?

at this point my bicycle bell ringing was drawing a crowd of construction workers... lots of pointing an laughing (cartoonists do it for laughs). Made sure to get a photo of our two signs making sweet love.

Hear me now Oh thou bleak and unbearable world, Thou art base and debauched as can be; And a knight with his banners all bravely unfurled Now hurls down his gauntlet to thee!

Beautiful View of the rising Walmart...

the lonely city permit inspector guy...

Far be it to leave a few trees up to make the future parking lot less inhospitable.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 2:25pm
i'm sure they'll plant some in their big box landscaping plan?

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 2:28pm
could be worse. besides tearing into the purple mountains majesty, they could be handing out swine flu blankets etc. if that bike had a tail...and RR had a tail....and that bike was like a giant flying dragon....and RR was like a giant blue cat person....

by fredo on 7/30/2012 @ 2:35pm

When are you going to ride your bike over to the Tacoma Food Coop? There is plenty of despair there too because of their staff of non union minimum wage employees with no health care.

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 2:39pm
fredo's on the poorly strategized attack!!!!! i imagine his one track mind grinding and squeaking forward...

by fredo on 7/30/2012 @ 2:45pm

A guy posts 16 pictures of his bicycle and I'm the one accused of having a "one track mind." I'm sure the irony would be lost on you low bar.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 2:47pm
I ride my bike to the coop all the time.

I'm not only a customer, i'm a partial share holder/owner/member...  Nice selection of local organic milk!

And when SUVs aren't smashing through the storefront, a nice quiet and friendly place.

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 2:53pm
fredo, your one track mind only allows you to see the bicycle and not the context. The context changes from picture to picture.

fredo, you simply don't have the IQ to make solid arguments. So maybe you shouldn't at all. I would call your freedom of speech more an abuse of freedom or definitely an embarrassment to the first amendment.

fredo, they day you are able to compare and contrast Walmart and a COOP properly is the day I start voting conservatively.

fredo, irony? really you are going to attempt to understand and school me on what irony is? hahahahahaa like the irony of the tea party defending the lower and middle class killing GOP approach to government? Irony fredo? hahahahaha You're cute.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 3:06pm
@britton   that bike has become a companion on a strange journey called life.  Add a few spring clamps and a curtain rod  and you get a FREEDOM OF SPEECH cruiser.

by CaptainBritton on 7/30/2012 @ 3:12pm
I used to mount an easel to the back and would take it plein-airing. I've even mounted cameras to the back and made a weird pump-organ music video called "Hell is other people"...It's an art bike through and through!I'm happy to see it out and about, tickling the well-traversed roads of Tacoma. Life on a bike!

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 3:16pm
nuts! I don't see the hell video up there www.youtube.com/user/SukysFamily/videos

by fredo on 7/30/2012 @ 3:21pm
Well, let me try.

Walmart is popular with lots of shoppers
Tacoma Food Coop isn't popular with lots of shoppers.
Walmart hires lots of employees
Tacoma Food coop doesn't hire lots of employees
Walmart will generate hundreds of thousands of tax dollars each year
Tacoma Food coop doesn't generate hardly any tax dollars.
WM generates lots of contruction project dollars for Tacoma families
Tacoma Food Coop generates almost zero construction project dollars.

Hope you're ready to start voting conservatively.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 3:23pm
look at the construction sign fredo, those workers are all from Woodenville

and when the SUV smashed through the front door/windows/wall it was local glass company reconstructing the storefront of the TACOMA FOOD COOP !

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 4:08pm
fredo, WM vacuums up all the dollars that could go to a properly spread out army of COOPs. All the coops combined could equal everything one WM can do. You don't have to be an economist to see that, fredo. You just have to not be willfully ignorant. And also willfully generating myths about COOPs. Instead of constructing JUST ONE WM, we could have the same amount of construction project dollars going to building a COOP on every corner. With a COOP on every corner, people can just walk instead of burn fossil fuels to get their daily crap. And instead of burning large amounts of fossile fuels in cargo getting the crap from china to put in WM's, we can just employ everyone locally to either fabricate or grow everything that is sold at the COOP's. fredo, its time for you to go. Your way is going to be at work until the oil runs out. Which it will. The oil is going to be gone. All gone. All over. No more bullshit c*ck sucking globalism and champagne pyramid ballroom party pageantry;) But it appears to be the job of the sane to find ways to implement alternatives to WM now so that when WM can no longer exist we can still get america its bullshit that its been grossly accustomed to getting EVERYDAY.

fredo, you aren't able to properly compare and contrast WM and a COOP because you've got a very narrow field of vision when it comes to the long term economy of the United States of America. And I think its simply because you don't really care about her. Which is the grand irony of all pseudo american, flag pin wearing conservatives. Pseudo Americans. Our greatest foe of the 21st century is not some ill equipped arab folks, its these pseudo americans we have to keep an eye on.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 4:36pm

by fredo on 7/30/2012 @ 4:42pm
Nobody is preventing anyone from opening one Coop store or from opening an "army of Coops." You don't have to be an economist to see that, low bar. You just have to not be willfully ignorant. And also willfully generating myths about WalMart. With a WalMart on every corner, people can just walk instead of buring fossil fuels

Previously I provided contrasts between WM and the Food Coops. Now for some comparisons:

Both stores in ugly buildings
Both stores attached to parking lots
Neither store has any residential housing overhead
Both stores on bus lines
Both stores have low wage employees
Neither store has lavish benefits.
Neither store has unionized laborers.
Both stores have employees who probably qualify for some government assistance.
Fuel burning vehicles bring produce to both stores for sales.
Both stores use electricity, and natural gas which may have environmental consequences.
Shoppers at both stores use petroleum burning vehicles.

More later.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 4:54pm
the Food Coop building is covered with the scenic 6th ave murals...  all painted by the 6th ave scenic muralist guy who is a local folk legend to us artist types.

Does walmart have a folk-hero mural?   No I don't think so.

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 4:57pm

by fredo on 7/30/2012 @ 4:58pm

OK, that would be more of a contrast than a comparison. Point taken RR.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 5:00pm
I'm perfectly willing to accept a Walmart bribe to be commissioned into painting a walmart mural on the ugly walmart building.

Come on Walmart! Put local artists back to work!

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 5:02pm
putting LOCAL construction workers back to work!

better luck next time woodinville!

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 5:03pm
hahaha yeah RR just don't sign anything that says you can't paint anything negative about WM on the side.....lolz

oh boy globalism is about to get its ass handed to it in a BIG WAY. peak oil bye bye.

by fredo on 7/30/2012 @ 5:10pm

RR, if you're going to criticize WM for importing goods from China you might want to stop publishing pictures of your "Huffy" brand bicycle. Since 1998...MADE IN CHINA. Oh, what delicious irony.

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 5:20pm
yeah fredo, huffy had to sell because of cooperate misuse of pension funds. and now huffy's pension program is run by the feds. what else you got fredo? what else could you possibly point out the invisible hand of the market knocking over for Americans? the 'delicious' irony is that fredo can use the internet because the government created it. the 'delicious' irony is that the invisible hand of the market that fredo defends is the reason huffy is now made in china and showing up in RR's pictures.

by fredo on 7/30/2012 @ 5:22pm
"huffy had to sell because of cooperate misuse of pension fundsI" low bar

I see low bar, when RR rides around town on his Huffy he's not making a statement in support of CHINESE MANUFACTURING, he's making a statement in support of US CORPORATE GREED.

HA HA HA you just can't make this stuff up. Thanks, that's priceless low bar.

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 5:29pm
don't exactly know whats so funny about americans losing their jobs at huffy corp but i can see why it would make a pseudo american chuckle.

by fredo on 7/30/2012 @ 5:33pm
You don't see what's funny?

RRs posting pictures of his bicycle on an anti-corporation anti-Chinese manufacturing blog and the company which manufactured his bicycle is associated with both corporate excesses and Chinese manufacturing.

I would think that even somebody as dense as you would see the humor.

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 5:39pm
i see, well every town has a village idiot. i guess tacoma's is fredo.

so fredo, you are suggesting that all RR really is doing is self promotion and that because his bike was made in china that his protest of a made in chinese goods peddling corporation is just a means for RR to self promote his blogs, graphic artist talent etc? because if RR was a true protestor he'd be riding a bike that was not bought at WM. Isn't that just a giant red herring?

by JesseHillFan on 7/30/2012 @ 5:47pm
Here is a better bicycle Made in the USA (mostly) too.I actually like this one better than the Yuba Mundo which I was eyeing for quite a while..Easier to get on and off of (it's a comfort unisex cargo bike) rated up to 600 pounds. With my current bicycle it's difficult to get on or off of with my Veltop inclement weather cover.A Veltop would work far better on this Madsen.www.madsencycles.com/bikes/

I know the tub looks weird but you can take it off and use their accessory rack instead.Though the tub has child seats inside and one can carry a lot of groceries in that.Lot's of very cool features if you look closer.REI even has it on their site now too.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 6:15pm
I didn't pay one red cent for this bike.  It was stolen from Captain Britton's back porch in broad daylight.  I use the tools of the conspiracy against the conspiracy itself...  KUNG FU LIKE WATER!

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 6:18pm
I MADE A LOT OF SPECIAL MODIFICATIONS MYSELF to this bike using parts purchased at 2nd Cycle 2ndcycle.org/what-is-2nd-cycle/

parts that would otherwise be thrown into a landfill or sold back to china as scrap metal.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 6:21pm
(also note the anti-walmart sign was printed in the port of tacoma by a union shop)

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 6:24pm
now I have an environmental question for everyone.

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 6:26pm
thats fine RR. the invisible hand is going to sweep all that shit nicely under Chinamart. and then somehow its going to be a delicious irony. Or is the irony the iron blowing off the tip of that soil pile? I don't know these days, because fredo was so bright to point out that irony can pretty much just be anything.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 6:33pm
I didn't see one water truck spraying down for dust either!

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 6:37pm
cars/trucks were coming and going from the worksite.  There was a huge vehicle washing station at the front gate, but it didn't appear to be active.  Look at my pictures, any of those vehicles look wet ?

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 6:38pm
how much lead and arsenic contamination is spread around our community by the Tacoma Food Coop ?  I wonder!

by JesseHillFan on 7/30/2012 @ 6:39pm
Process the Lead to make batteries (or electronic solder) and process the Arsenic for electronics (like in Gallium Arsenide solar cells) or as Ant killer.Turn bad into good.Recycle man

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 6:46pm
all this toxic dirt is being kicked up near a hospital  FYI

by CaptainBritton on 7/30/2012 @ 6:49pm
There is nothing wrong with that bike...My Mom bought it for me on a whim...At Wal-Mart, I'm sure...I just think it's got more soul used than rusting on a porch.

Hey we all come from the Stars, man. Groove on some positivity for a while.

by JesseHillFan on 7/30/2012 @ 6:50pm
Arsenic has a tangy taste good for a BBQ as an added trace amount spice

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 6:52pm
(totally keeping the patina of rust)

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 6:59pm
how much toxic waste was I unwittingly exposed to on my bike ride today?  Right now I am experiencing low-grade mental duress.

I want my planet back!

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 7:10pm

Tricia Garrett DeOme So
the site is not in the plume area according to the ecology website so
they didn't have to test. Regarding the soil piles they only need to be
covered if not worked for seven days from a stormwater perspective. I
plan on being out there during a rain event to catch turbid water going
into a catchbasin. But the dust does have to be kept down, if you see
dust get a video and report is to ecology the city inspectors might do
something too.

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 7:11pm
UPDATE: Justin D. Leighton I have heard at least that they will follow city code on tree’s - 1 tree per 6 parking stalls!

by JesseHillFan on 7/30/2012 @ 7:12pm
All Washington dirt is also contaminated with Uranium too.

by fredo on 7/30/2012 @ 7:40pm

how many trees at Tacoma Food Coop?

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 7:46pm

by fredo on 7/30/2012 @ 8:27pm

ok, it looks nice i'll grant u that

also crawling with ultra-attractive hippie/hipster chicks.  You won't find those at walmart!

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 8:48pm
those Tacoma chicks must be seensters or gritsters because there are beaucoup hipster baguettes in OLY, but they just don't push as hard to be seen which is why you don't see them at the OLY COOPs. but thats not the case with cafe vita. my lawd, if coffee shops were turds and alt baguettes were flies......

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 8:59pm

don't know about Cafe Vita... but over in Cafe Dei you'll find industrious indie workers!

by low bar on 7/30/2012 @ 9:19pm
Isn't there like a Cheers somewhere? Either have to see the people of Walmart door dinging their way into the wrong side entrance or some gritster making my coffee. ISN'T THERE ANYTHING IN BETWEEN?? lolz

by NineInchNachos on 7/30/2012 @ 9:32pm
oh yeah!

most of the workers appeared to operate with "english-as-a-second-language"
I hope the management advised them on the tacoma soil risks as nobody was wearing protective suits or breathing apparatuses.

When you see a new business like Walmart being constructed you should not be angry at the business but rather with the government. President Obama just instructed us the "business did not build that."

by low bar on 9/3/2012 @ 4:00pm
And lets also lie about everything from our policies to our marathon running time. Lets just break the 9th commandment all day long in GOP country. Lets just lie all day long till we are at a loss for words "The assumption was that, um, the, the, ah, again — I probably can't speak to that in an exact way so I better just not," - Eric Cantor.

"Let Detroit go bankrupt" - Romney

IS that how you build a business? By letting it go bankrupt so you can scavenge it?

Bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive. You're welcome.

by fredo on 9/3/2012 @ 4:36pm

Right, I don't know if President Obama was actually lying or maybe he was just confused.

by low bar on 9/3/2012 @ 5:06pm
There's only one liar here and it's Romney's gang. I mean, anyone who supports a church that lies about Jesus Christ having visited the USA is of course going to lie about anything else they want to. Lets just make it all up. Yeah Jesus Christ visited America. And Staples wasn't built using other peoples money.

Again. Bin Laden is dead and Detroit is alive.

I know Romney looks at America as a struggling business and wants to swoop down with the rest of his vulture buddies and do the USA like they did U.S. Steel.

Romney doesn't want to turn the USA around. He want's to gut it. Gut it like the Kalakala. And gut it like U.S. Steel

"Let Detroit go bankrupt" - Romney

Thats like saying let the USA go bankrupt

The GOP doesn't build business. The GOP DESTROYS business.

No wonder why RR is sick.www.thenewstribune.com/2012/09/04/228095...

"About three months before that opening, the store’s management will rent space nearby as a recruitment center for the estimated 300 workers needed to operate the store, Wall said. Notice of job openings will be posted at www.careers.walmart.com, said Wells. Interested persons should fill out online applications. Those deemed potentially qualified will be called in for further interviews."

On the bright side of things Maybe RR can make some artwork for that recruitment center
