"GENTRIFICATION was spray painted on a billboard on 6th ave (a Point Ruston advertisement), this act was not vandalism as some may say nor was it graffiti. It was an act done in solidarity with those being pushed out by the development of condos everywhere, by the social conditions everyone is faced with everywhere. Though this may seem small they had to pay for the propaganda they impose upon everyone and now a beautiful piece of work has covered up their shit."

|They have got their priorities reversed.|
Condos and apartments in city limits good.
Suburban sprawl bad:
...the United States has developed a terrible pattern for human ecology, a poorly designed landscape of "automobile suburbs" that destroys economies, isolates us from one another, impoverishes our cities, and ravages our countryside.
Perhaps they will attend a Sierra Club meeting or one at the Cascade Land Conservancy on the Growth Management Act and how urban areas need to be infilled.
Or they they could read the City of Tacoma's Green Ribbon Task force on climate change which calls for the infilling of cities rather than Pierce County's sprawlish ways.

|for real. also is anybody getting 'pushed out' by these things? this particular development is being built on a horribly contaminated stretch of man made disaster (the whole reason for 'dirt alert' in tacoma).
I find a bunch of rich people living on top a toxic nightmare an attractive prospect.
I do feel sorry for the poor migrant construction workers paid to shovel in this poison shit hole though.

Asarco is a former smelter which used to spew arsenic all over:
Then Asarco shut down their plant and the entire place was a huge superfund. Clean up started around 1990.
The litigation on the contamination was unbelievably complex. A class action lawsuit was filed and surrounding houses had their lawns torn up and replaced.
The Asarco sold their assets and declared bankruptcy putting the issue of cleanup in question. Yet it went on with the EPA and a limited fund. The clean up has been going on for 20 years.
Here are some of the clean up documents:
No one has ever lived in the Asarco site to my knowledge and it has been a scary fenced off Mad Maxx zone since 1985 since the "plant" shut down.
I suppose Ruston could leave it as a dead zone for another 20 years.
The whole contaminated site has been a curse on Tacoma and Ruston for nearly a 100 years. We will see Ruston and Tacoma can ever change from being known for their contamination.
Even though its currently a wasteland, it is a familiar wasteland and perhaps psychologically difficult to think that Tacoma and Ruston could be something more than they are.
We will see.
History Flashback: Tacoma's Shattered Self Esteem
No matter how many historical accounts of Tacoma one reads through, it is still difficult to really ascertain how such a once proud city in first half of the 1900s would one day be nearly abandoned in its entirety by the late 1970s downtown as Stephen Cysewski 1979 photographs document:

RR Anderson is one of the most curious characters in the UFO lore and the history of underground cartooning. He fought bizarre underground beings in the caves of Alaska, was wounded by a laser before it was invented, and had a background with the clandestine branch of the Tacoma Cartoonists Society.
