Something Good Brewing in Tacoma

The sweet aroma of barley, malt and hops once again permeates the South Sound air. Tacoma’s rich brewing heritage has experienced an impressive revival at premier brewpubs such as the Harmon Brewery & Restaurant and Engine House No. 9. With it, a friendly rivalry has emerged under the direction of two skilled brewmasters, who regularly deliver an impressive variety of distinctive, award-winning lagers and ales, much to the delight of their patrons.
Mike Davis of the Harmon and E-9’s Doug Tiede have put Tacoma back on the map as one of the Northwest’s stellar locations for fresh, on-site draft beer. They are admired for both their flagship brews and creative seasonal offerings. The intimate scale of these operations gives them artistic license to experiment and refine their recipes amidst Tacoma’s increasingly vibrant beer-drinking culture.
Davis and Tiede both tapped the potential created by two other visionaries, Dusty Trail and Pat Nagle. Both men saw a way to incorporate tasteful themed restaurants and small-scale craft breweries into the renovations of derelict, historic buildings. The Harmon and E-9 are now well established as much loved Tacoma institutions, each with a distinct atmosphere, good food and award-winning draft beer.
