11th Street Link light rail station construction begins

I shot these photos yesterday during lunch. The City of Tacoma confirmed this morning that all the construction activity is indeed for the new Link light rail stop(s) near 11th and Commerce.

A light rail stop a block away from Tacoma Daily Index 'world headquarters' -- that works for me!

I know it seems kinda bizarre, but it really is a pain in the rear the way the link doesn't link up to the 10th and Commerce transit center. Also, since the walk light at 9th and Commerce can take 10 minutes it can cause you to miss your connection. This should improve matters.

we lobbied pretty hard for this station. after being in tacoma since 1890, we threatened to move to university place if the station wasn't constructed. part of the deal also calls for a digital billboard on the site that flashes the latest headlines 24/7.

(i'm joking r.r. -- please don't boycott the index!)

"...since the walk light at 9th and Commerce can take 10 minutes it can cause you to miss your connection..."

Too true. The traffic engineers of Tacoma appear to show little skill at timing traffic lights in a pedestrian-friendly way. See also places where you hit the cross button and still have to wait 10 minutes. (I'm looking at you, 6th and Pine!)

The end stop for Link should always have been closer to 10th and Commerce, its location is ridiculous. But adding stops along a short run make the whole thing less usable in my mind. Hope I'm proven wrong.

many cities i have lived in have pedestrian bridges that keep feet and cars seperate and eliminate standing around waiting for colored lights to tell us we can move...pacific ave at union station and uwt is a place where no other city but tacoma would force people to run across the road at surface level???

Very good.

Now when does expansion of the line begin for real?
