Car-Bike Tangle Downtown

On the Link ride in to work this morning a little after 8:00 a.m., we crossed 11th on Commerce to find a woman on the ground in the middle of the intersection. Bike on the ground next to her. Contents of a sack lunch spilled out on the street. A silver pick-up truck stopped nearby.

I got to the office, grabbed the camera, and headed out to see what happened. By the time I arrived, medics were there and the intersection was mostly cleared. A Pierce Transit supervisor told me the cyclist was hit by the truck.  "She's OK, but she's going to be sore," he said.

Cyclist in white top / brown pants talking to emergency service folks . . .

Driver on left, cyclist on right . . .

On the way back to the office, I could hear driver-biker talking.  Driver: "I'm sorry."  Biker: "Accidents happen."

Everybody be careful out there.

Obviously I can't speculate on the cause since I wasn't there, but wow, the bicyclist must be a freakin' Zen master or something. Anybody who knows me knows that I'm totally Mr. Chill, but I would be fuming if I got hit on my way to work. (But since she's right, accidents do happen, I can also sympathize with the driver who I'm sure legitimately feels like shit whether or not he was at fault.)

I echo Todd, be careful out there, peeps!

Thats gonna hurt a whole lot more tomorrow than it does today. She is lucky to be walking.

That looks like a blue tooth in the drivers ear. Bet he was talking to someone on the phone while he was running into her.

Always a good reminder seeing how I rode in today. Gotta stay alert whether behind the handlebars or behind the wheel. Glad everyone in this case seemed to be OK.

Thanks Todd!

while motoring to work today I was spacing out... chatted briefly with Izenman then sketched in my pocket notebook. I love my bus.

At least she isn't hurt. I've had way too many near misses in downtown on my bike. Bit it's not just two wheelin' that can be dangerous with the idiot drivers 'round here.
Two weeks ago I had a near miss while running 5 mile drive... a blue Honda (one of those new models that looks like a box) damn near plowed me down over by Fort Nisqually.
