Downtown Lobby or History Museum?

Anyone visiting the Tacoma Daily Index in the Washington Building downtown may notice a recent addition -- a dozen or so historic photographs that fill the building's main lobby. I noticed the collection the day after it was installed. I have stopped to admire the pictures several times on my way in and out of the office.

Many photos bear the Boland name. One photograph shows the massive hole excavated at the corner of 11th and Pacific to make way for the 17-story building constructed in the early-1920s. Another shows construction workers standing on a steel beam and posing for a photograph. And a couple panoramics offer great views of Tacoma's early skyline.

I e-mailed building manager Mark Isner of Seattle-based Stratford Group to ask about the collection. According to Isner, it was researched and put together by Brooke Boback of Tacoma-based Artifacts Consulting.

If you're into local history and happen to be in the neighborhood (1019 Pacific Ave.), stop by and check them out.

Here are a few photographs I took this afternoon:

If you ever get the opportunity, Michael Sullivan (of Artifacts, UWT, and others), in one of his presentations, gives a fascinating and entertaining account of this building, the tragic failure of the Scandinavian American Bank of Tacoma, and it's probably influence on the writing of Dashiell Hammmet (Maltese Falcon). The story was also related in a recent article in City Arts. Perhaps some at the library can elaborate better than I, but Boland is one of the Tacoma photography studios of which the Tacoma Public Library has a great collection. Even though a newspaper history and images are available at the library and on-line, it's nice to see real photos nicely mounted, so thanks for the tip.
